Dancing on the Monster’s Teeth: A Reading

Celebrate new chapbooks by Heidi Czerwiec, Saara Myrene Raaapana, and Carolyn Williams-Noren, all released by {dancing girl press & studio}, with a reading at Boneshaker! BYOB, free and open to the public.

About the readers…

Heidi Czerwiec is moving to Minneapolis next summer. She’s a poet, essayist, translator, and critic who teaches at the University of North Dakota. She is the author of Self-Portrait as Bettie Page and the editor of North Dakota Is Everywhere: An Anthology of Contemporary North Dakota Poets. Her chapbook A Is For A-ké, The Chinese Monster was recently published by Dancing Girl Press. It is a narrative sequence imagining the life of A-ké, a young man with a parasitic twin who lived for real in Canton, China leading up to the First Opium War with Britain.

“To get a hundred million parts, you must ransom one whole.” In the world of Saara Myrene Raappana’s Milk Tooth, Levee, Fever, coming in 2015 from Dancing Girl Press, the surest way to save yourself—whether you’re a goddess e-mailing her estranged mother, a waitress watching a hostage situation unfold, or a tourist being offered blood to drink— is to be brave enough to break. Saara’s poems have appeared in such publications as 32 Poems, Blackbird, [PANK], Subtropics, The Gettysburg Review, and Verse Daily. Born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, she served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in southern China and edits Cellpoems, a poetry journal distributed via text message.

Carolyn Williams-Noren’s chapbook from Dancing Girl Press, Small Like a Tooth, is not afraid to complain about babies. Carolyn’s "babies” are now eight and ten years old. Her newer poems are not about babies, and can be seen this fall in Tupelo Quarterly, Tar River Poetry, Water~Stone Review, and Jaggery. Carolyn created and tends the Little Poetry Library at 39th and Lake outside the Blue Moon Café. She lives in Minneapolis, and works as a communications consultant and adult education tutor.

We are slated to go BEYOND this theater of animated calculus…

Our Flow Is Hard is teaming up with the unknown. Come listen to three poetgoddesses glow in the dark: Cynthia Spencer from Washington and local magics Lara Mimosa Montes and Feng Sun Chen. We’ll enter a house full of motley tongues and furry machines. It will be a house full of puppets and dolls, sounds and limbs in motion, talking loud and making sounds with meaning. We’re sure some light will bend, and we’ll leave in the form of prisms.
