Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy are Not the Same Thing

Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy are Not the Same Thing

As regular readers will know I have a particular bug bear about lazy journalism and journalists when it comes to articles relating to hypnosis and hypnotherapy. In fairness, I am just as grumpy about practitioners who partake in articles without having the knowledge base to make a real contribution to the subject. But I digress.

I came across an article today where it said “Hypnosis also known as Hypnotherapy”. Well this is just wrong, and if I may be bolder, just stupid. Hypnosis is not in and of itself therapeutic, hypnosis is a state. Hypnotherapy is the utilisation of that state for therapeutic ends. This is by no means the first time that this error is made. I have seen articles referring to “stage hypnotherapy” which is just wrong as stage hypnosis is totally different to therapy.

I cannot emphasise enough the importance of journalists understanding the basics of the subject before you write about it. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are complex subjects. They should be treated as such, do your research, ask relevant people relevant questions before you attempt to write about this most interesting subject. I know this will probably fall on deaf ears, but one can only try.
