You’ve just finished your sales interview. Now the difficult time starts – waiting. Every candidate wants to hear back from a hiring company right away. But it doesn’t always work this way, no matter how well the interview went. Companies may still have other candidates to interview, procedures to follow, and sometimes, other things get in the way and delay the process.

So, how long should you wait to follow up after your sales interview? Here are some sales recruiter tips:

1. Get Clarification Right Away

Before you leave the interview, ask the interviewer about the follow-up process. These are common and important questions to inquire about. Ask when you should expect to hear from them. All companies are different and work on unique timelines. Some may say they will follow up in a couple days; others, a couple weeks.

2. Send a Follow-Up Thank You Note Within 24 Hours

It is common practice to send a simple thank you email to the interviewer within 24 hours of your interview. In fact, many hiring managers expect candidates to send a thank you note not only to be polite but also to verify they are interested in the position. So, if you are interested in the job, send a quick note thanking the hiring manager for their time and briefly reaffirming your interest in the role.

3. Follow Up Again If You Haven’t Heard Back in the Timeline Given

It may be a few weeks before you hear back from the hiring manager, even if you sent a follow-up email. Avoid following up again until the stated timeframe has come and gone. If they said they would get to you within a week, wait for the week to pass before contacting them again. Send a brief email saying you are just following up and restate your interest in the position.

4. Keep Looking While You Wait

Don’t put your job search on hold until you wait to hear back. You may not hear back. Go full steam ahead with your job search until you get a definitive yes. Remember, you don’t have the job until the papers are signed.
