Opera $1.2 Billion Buyout Drops to $600 Million in New Deal
Remember that Chinese consortium that was going to buyout Opera's business for $1.2 billion? Well, it seems the deal failed to get past regulatory approval.
According to Reuters, there's a new deal and it equated to $600 million for parts of the business.
The Chinese consortium now plans to acquire Opera's browser business, both for mobile phones and desktop computers, the performance and privacy apps section of the company as well as its technology licensing business and its stake in Chinese joint venture nHorizon, Opera said. It will not acquire Opera's advertising and marketing business, its TV operations, nor the apps that are game-related.

the deal has been renegotiated: the same group will now pay $600 million to acquire only certain parts of Opera’s business.
Opera will sell the Qihoo 360-led consortium its mobile and desktop browser operations, its performance and privacy apps, its tech licensing not including Opera TV; and Opera’s 29 percent stake in Chinese JV nHorizon.
Opera’s remaining business that is not part of the sale will include Opera Mediaworks, Opera Apps & Games (including Bemobi) and Opera TV, along with about 560 employees. As of Q1, Opera had 1,669 employees in its full operation.
The Opera name and trademark will go the deal and the remaining company has some 18 months to find a new name, a company spokesperson told me. The new deal has already been approved by Opera’s board.
I guess that's it then for Opera Browser.

Because of this. Imagine Sony or Samsung would have to come up with a new name.
It's not like Opera is Microsoft and IE has a negative marketing weight and they can rename and force everyone to a new browser through an OS update.
Lots of spamming bots from Opera mobile IP blocks too. May not even be worth 600 mil.
As another media outlet put it. "The cool kids all use Vivaldi these days anyway.
