April 18, 2019 – Sudbury, ON — Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario — FedNor

Residents, families and businesses in Greater Sudbury will experience first-hand the benefits of hosting the 2019 Esso Cup, Canada's 11th annual national female midget championship, thanks in part to a $25,000 investment from the Government of Canada. The FedNor funding has enabled the organization to promote the event to a wide audience and increase planned visitation to Sudbury from across the nation.

The funding was announced today by Paul Lefebvre, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, and Marc Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedNor.

The event will feature 19 games between April 21st and 27th, 2019 at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex. It will draw visitors from far and wide, and put the Nickel City in the national spotlight, especially during the national broadcast of the Gold Medal game on Saturday, April 27, 2019. This is only the second time Ontario has hosted the Esso Cup, which is expected to attract 4,500 spectators and generate approximately $2 million in economic activity for the City of Greater Sudbury.
