Thirty one new large fires were reported in the past week. Currently, seven large uncontained wildfires are burning in five states. Kansas and Oklahoma each have two, and Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota have one. Wildland firefighters and support personnel contained 26 large fires this week.

The National Interagency Coordination Center predictive services staff released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook on April 1. Parts of the Eastern, Rocky Mountain and Southwest areas could see above normal wildfire potential this month

A fuels and fire behavior advisory is still in effect for Northwest Texas, western Oklahoma, southwest Kansas, southeastern Colorado and far eastern New Mexico. Wildland fire personnel should expect extreme to unprecedented fire growth and intensity in these areas.

When you decide to live in the wildland urban interface, or WUI, get to know your neighbors and not just the people living around you. Wildfire has also lived in your neighborhood. Act today to protect your neighborhood by preventing unwanted fires and reducing the losses from catastrophic wildfire. These are things everyone can do. Introduce your community to valuable programs like Firewise and Fire Adaptive Communities to bring partners together to reduce the risks before fires start. Don’t wait for the flames to come your way, get Firewise today!

Weather

A cold front will move off the East Coast today, with precipitation ending in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic and dry and breezy northwesterly winds behind the front across the Southeast into Saturday. An upper low will bring light precipitation to portions of the Northwest into the northern Great Basin into this weekend, with moderate precipitation likely for California. Well above normal temperatures are forecast ahead of the low across the Southwest into the southern and central High Plains. Dry, southwesterly winds will likely produce elevated to critical conditions across southern New Mexico Sunday spreading onto much of the central Plains and western Mid-Mississippi Valley Monday. Another upper low is likely to drop into the Northwest and northern Rockies Monday, with light precipitation spreading across portions of the Northwest into the northern Plains and snow levels. As these systems move onto the Plains mid-next week, wetting rain is forecast for much of the eastern Plains into the Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes, while severe thunderstorms are likely on the central/southern Plains. Periods of snow are expected across much of western Alaska and the Interior this weekend, with strong downslope winds forecast downwind of the Alaska Range. A strong low to the northwest of Hawai’i is forecast to bring heavy rain to portions of Niihau and Kauai today into tomorrow, with scattered showers moving across the rest of the islands this weekend.
