Top 5 Vegan Eats in London

Last week, I escaped to London with my boyfriend. We were there partly for business and partly for pleasure. It ended up being a massive eating frenzy. Since the last time I’d visited London, even more delicious plant-based food had blossomed. As a big fan of local small businesses, it was cool to meet so many young entrepreneurs spreading some really bomb-dot-com vegan food. From Mexican burritos to donuts to sushi to brownies, I really had everything I’ve ever dreamed of. I hope you enjoy this list of my top 5 picks for vegan eats in London!

1. Borough 22

Okay, so I seriously can’t remember the last time I had vegan donuts that tasted this good. They’re soft, moist, deliciously sugary and just the perfect flavor & texture. I’m a very particular person when it comes to sweets. These donuts by Borough 22 hit the nail right on the head.

I made a trip to Selfridge’s explicitly for these donuts. I tried the cinnamon sugar, sugared, vanilla glazed, and raspberry glazed. They were all delicious, but my favorite had to be the classic sugar ones. I went back almost every day to stock up on more, but they were almost sold out every time I went. Be sure to call ahead or go early.

I love that they are locally made in southeast London by a dad who set out on a mission to make allergy-friendly goodies for his wife and children. You can totally tell they’re made with love! The most mind blowing part was that they’re not only vegan, but also gluten-free, wheat-free, and soy-free too. They’re so good that I couldn’t even believe it!

2. Young Vegans

Young Vegans was actually recommended to me by another popular vegan pop-up food stall Pomodoro E Basilico. They were both going to be at Brick Lane Market, so we headed there on Sunday anxiously anticipating to eat our fill of all the vegan cuisine. I fell in love with Young Vegans from first sight, with options like a sushi burrito filled with sweet potato, avocado & cashew cream, a brunch burrito with scrambled tofu, vegan “sausage”& black beans, and the yummiest air-fried polenta “fries”.

Honestly, I could eat these burritos every single day. They’re so good, satisfying, and really well made with all vegan, natural ingredients. I hate when street food is too greasy, but the Young Vegans made sure to keep it refreshing while still being comforting and packed with flavor. If you haven’t had a chance to make it to Brick Lane, it’s an absolute MUST! Don’t leave without trying their polenta fries with ketchup.

3. Cookies & Scream Bakery

An all-time favorite of mine, Cookies & Scream Bakery serves up 100% vegan & gluten-free baked goods that are naughty and nice. I put them on my vegan food guide to London last year as well as on my list of the top 5 vegan restaurants in London. Their cookies, cakes, brownies, pies, and donuts are all low-fat, low-chloesterol, and made with refined sugars, but taste just like they came out of my grandma’s oven. I highly recommend the Chico Pie which is like a thick slab of peanut butter chocolate chip cookie dough. It’s heaven in a bite.

Also, I couldn’t resist the regular chocolate chip cookie sandwich filled with thick vanilla icing. Since I’m a big fan of theirs, I made a point to stop by their new location on Holloway Road in addition to their uber-popular spot in Camden Market. It was a bigger dessert parlour space, with a little bit wider of a selection including chocolate mousse, chocolate chip banana bread, and banoffee pie. No matter what you pick, you’re sure to enjoy their treats!

4. Club Mexicana

ALL VEGAN MEXICAN FOOD! It seems to be that dreams do come true. This was my first stop at Camden Market, because this is no Chipotle we’re talking about. Club Mexicana offers vegan Mexican street food that’s so epic even non-vegans will like it. Not only do they have the classic staples like black beans and guacamole, but also they offer delicious meat alternatives like BBQ pulled jackfruit and Beer-marinated seitan.

The BBQ jackfruit burrito with rice, beans, lettuce, guacamole, and their homemade cashew cream sauce was my personal favorite. I’d never tried BBQ jackfruit before, so I was skeptical at first because I’m not the biggest fan of meat alternatives. But to my surprise I really liked it! It was very rich and flavorful, unlike anything I’d had before. They’ve also got loaded cheesy nachos and to-fish tacos which was enough reason for me to go back.

5. Peanut Butter Bakery

Donuts again? Yep, Peanut Butter Bakery makes really uniquely flavored vegan donuts that are comfort food on another level. They really outdid themselves with the Oreo-stuffed donuts and chocolate peanut butter pretzel donuts on the weekend I visited them. Sure, they may not be gluten-free or baked, but if you want a locally made, vegan donut that tastes so much better than Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts then this is your way to go.

You can obviously tell I have a sweet tooth, because I bought a box of a half dozen donuts to take back to our hotel. My favorites were their seasonal pumpkin spice donut and chocolate brownie. The brownie tasted so much like the kind I used to eat as a kid that I almost didn’t believe it was vegan. Also, they change their flavors every week which means you’re always in store for something new.

I’d love to hear your favorite vegan restaurants or eats in London, so if you have any recommendations please let me know in the comments! I will definitely be making a trip back soon, hopefully.
