No matter what your zodiac element—earth, fire, water, or air—it’s never a bad time for a winter sojourn. From the sugar sand beaches of Miami to the powdery slopes of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Susan Miller, the venerable astrologer and fashionable founder of AstrologyZone, weighs in on where domestic travel might take the 12 celestial signs this year.

1. Pisces (Feb. 19–March 20)
Photo: Courtesy of Four Seasons Surf Club

As a Pisces you are imaginative, mystical, romantic, compassionate, highly intuitive, spiritual, and possibly religious, reflective and highly creative. You prefer to be near water, always.

Visit: A perfect setting would be the Florida Keys with their charming gingerbread houses, tiny streets, and sublime turquoise waters. If you want a more cosmopolitan experience, head to Miami, with the salty sea breeze and sexy salsa music spilling out from restaurants, instantly getting you in the mood for fun and love. Pisces does not need a lot of outside stimulation to enjoy a vacation—just the opposite. You like a soothing environment to unlock the rich imaginative repository of ideas that lies within you.

Where to Stay: With only 77 rooms and steeped in glam history (think Sinatra and Gardner), the Richard Meier–designed Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club mixes clean lines with chic, leafy interiors, compliments of Parisian designer Joseph Dirand. Come evenings, slip into Le Sirenuse for al fresco champagne and Amalfi Coast–inflected dishes like linguine with clams.

2. Aries (March 21–April 19)
Photo: Read McKendree / Courtesy of the Anvil Hotel

You are adventurous, energetic, an enthusiastic self-starter, pioneering, and always up for something new. Most Aries are athletic and inquisitive, and on vacation they need a complete change from everyday life.

Visit: Go to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, against the dramatic, breathtaking backdrop of the Grand Teton Mountains. You’ll have big sky and flat planes, and you’ll see real-life cowboys on horseback tending their cattle and using their lassos to pull in an errant bull. There are plenty of hiking paths, and if you like, add a tour of Grand Teton National Park and the nearby Yellowstone National Park. Work in time to poke around through shops in Jackson Hole and buy a pair of cowboy boots to wear with your jeans, and you’ll fit right in.

Where to Stay: In town, design-savvy folks drop their bags at the renovated Anvil Hotel, whose 49 rooms are dressed in two-toned wainscoting, brass fixtures, and iron bed frames. Meanwhile, the ultimate ski-in ski-out experience happens in Teton Village at the venerable, rustic-luxe Four Seasons Jackson Hole, where fireplaces are always ablaze, and afterward, a little après inside the Mangy Moose.

3. Taurus (April 20–May 20)
Photo: Courtesy of Meadowood

Taurus loves nature, and usually on a vacation you need to be near lush forests, mountains, and fresh air. You are observant, organized, realistic, loving, and warm-hearted.

Visit: Your senses are remarkably acute, so plan a trip to Napa Valley and expand your knowledge of California offerings with many wine tastings. Choose a five-star hotel in this region—and while you are at it, book a treatment at a sumptuous spa, too. (As a rule, you do not like staying at a hotel without creature comforts; those seem to you like camping.) Ask your concierge for names of fine restaurants. On your drive back to San Francisco, plan a special dinner once you reach this gastronomic capital, a perfect way to end your trip before flying home.

Where to Stay: In St. Helena, book a room at the quiet, elegant Meadowood Napa Valley, where chic, cheery cottages stocked with California King beds, cozy fireplaces, and vineyard-inspired spa treatments dovetail with an endless array of local wineries. Pssst: This summer, the iconic resort will unveil a new fitness and pool area.

4. Gemini (May 21–June 21)

Young and hip in manner and spirit, curious, intellectual, and an excellent communicator, you are also quick-witted, often funny, and always clever. Friends love that you are flexible, adaptable, and quite spontaneous.

Visit: You are not one to lie on a beach—you want to see and learn things. Go to Chicago, a city not only about pizza (note: Bon Appétit named it “Restaurant City of the Year” recently). For fun, buy a ticket to the world-famous Second City Comedy Club, browse the Art Institute of Chicago, or shop on the Magnificent Mile. Plan a trip in spring or in summer near your birthday—perfect timing—but dress warm in the winter (Burrrrr!).

Where to Stay: In the Gold Coast, the Viceroy Chicago is housed in a 1920s Art Deco building topped by a sleek, newly constructed glass tower. With interiors by TAL Studio, 180 rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows are bathed in gold and midcentury touches while roomy marble bathrooms are stocked with Natura Bisse toiletries.

5. Cancer (June 22–July 22)
Photo: Courtesy of Harbour House

Sensitive, loving, warm, family-oriented, empathetic, financially savvy, intuitive, creative, you are also quite a romantic and wear your heart on your sleeve.

Visit: To be truly happy, the little Crab needs to be near water. One of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world, Niagara Falls, is a perfect destination if you are dating or married, have children, or want to bring the entire family. Although the falls on the American side are lovely, the Canadian side, just a hop, skip, and a jump away, is even more dramatic. The negative ions of the water will have your spirits soaring in no time, and you might find that you start dreaming of the falls back at home.

Where to Stay: A quick drive from the Falls, the charming and bucolic Niagara on the Lake (think farm stands and local wineries) hosts the 31-room, wood-shingled Harbour House, which feels like visiting a friend’s place—albeit it with plaids, stripes, warm fireplaces, and, in the mornings, a generous breakfast sprawl.

6. Leo (July 23–Aug. 22)
Photo: Courtesy of 1 Hotel Brooklyn

You are sophisticated, cultured, fun loving, and jovial, and part of your job, dear Leo, is to teach the rest of us about how to enjoy life. Many Leos are highly creative and work in the arts, theater, and other forms of entertainment, especially those involving music.

Visit: The ideal vacation for you has to be a large and sophisticated city. Your motto is “Go big or go home,” so consider New York City. From the Metropolitan Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art to the Guggenheim and the Museum of Modern Art, you will have a chance to see many of the masterpieces of the world. Get tickets to the theater every night, for Leo rules the theatrical performance. If you go in summer, see the Yankees play ball while you munch on a hotdog and sip a beer or soda. Go shopping on Madison Avenue, but save time to shop the Lower East Side, for as a Leo, you admire uniqueness and artistic expression.

Where to Stay: Brimming with eco-chic touches, 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge has sweeping views of the Brooklyn Bridge waterfront and downtown Manhattan. Expect leafy-green walls, reclaimed materials (à la recycled pinewood) and guest rooms bathed in natural light, warm woods, and crisp white linens. Visit the rooftop bar for libations, and downstairs the Bamford Spa is for pampering.

7. Virgo (Aug. 23–Sept. 22)
Photo: Mark Boisclair / Courtesy of Enchantment Resort

Let’s face it—Virgo is smart. You read, debate, and pay attention to all the details. Your eagle eye misses nothing, the reason others call you discriminating, analytical, and literary.

Visit: The ideal vacation spot for you would be to go to Sedona, Arizona, a spot that is out of the ordinary, to transport your mind away from the usual hustle-bustle of life. You are a spiritual earth sign, so you are soothed in areas that bring you close to the beauty of nature—ideally a setting with rocks, trees, and earth. You love words, and as you drive north on I-17, look at the exit signs for Bloody Basin Road, Bumble Bee Creek, and Horse Thief Basin. You will be transported through U.S. history, to a place that settlers were drawn to, but unlike now, was quite wild at the very start. Go, and be transformed.

Where to Stay: Spread over 70 acres with breathtaking views of Boynton Canyon, the low-slung Enchantment Resort’s 218 rooms are decked in neutral palettes with rustic Southwestern flare and kiva fireplaces, seamlessly blending into the majestic red rocks. A spa menu hosts Native American–inspired treatments alongside local wraps using prickly pear.

8. Libra (Sept. 23–Oct. 22)

You are diplomatic, refined, elegant, pressed, and well-mannered, and you relish working in collaborations or partnerships. You are attracted to law, justice, and fairness. Libras make great museum curators, fashion and culture editors, and other taste arbiters—you love art in all of its forms.

Visit: Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a tiny city with a rich history and warm, pueblo-inspired architecture, with many rooms offering the kiva fireplaces. You would enjoy its many art galleries and charming streets, historic buildings, and churches. The Loretto Chapel, with the miraculous spiral staircase built after the architect died midway through the project, was a structure saved by an unassuming man dressed in shabby garbs. Shop in the town square for art objects, paintings, and native jewelry featuring turquoise, silver, lapis, malachite, opal, coral, and black onyx.

Where to Stay: In the heart of downtown Santa Fe, Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi's 58 rooms come kitted with hand-crafted wooden beds, warm kiva fireplaces, Pendleton pillows, and local ledger prints. Cozy common spaces are dotted with beamed ceilings and dark wood-on-wood and Spanish-meets-Colonial-style furniture. Drop by the buzzy lounge for a Silver Coin margarita and charred octopus served on potato polenta.

9. Scorpio (Oct. 23–Nov. 21)
Photo: Courtesy of Henry Howard Hotel

You are deeply emotional in a private, penetrating way, thoughtful, reflective, and contained. You prize having control, and are attracted to gaining power and money—and are talented at getting all that you want to achieve. You are confident, taciturn, intense, mysterious, and sexy.

Visit: Scorpio is interested all mysteries of life and death, so New Orleans is ideal. Start in the French Quarter to gain a feel for this beautiful city’s rich past. Walk through Royal and Magazine Streets, and breathe in the rich culture from the many shops and bistros. Have breakfast at Café du Monde and order irresistible beignets sprinkled with confectionary sugar and a cup of the city’s signature coffee blended with chicory. For dinner, there’s unforgettable Creole and Cajun-to-French cuisine, offering gumbos, jambalaya, po'boy sandwiches, and desserts like Bananas Foster. You can see that this is no place to start a diet. At night, listen to tales of witchcraft, voodoo, ghosts, and vampires (all for fun, of course—or is it?). If you love music, the historic Preservation Hall has the best jazz. New Orleans is just made for you, Scorpio.

Where to Stay: The stately 18-room boutique Henry Howard Hotel couples Victorian elegance, exposed brick walls, iron canopy beds, custom toile wallpaper, and classic New Orleans instruments like trumpets and clarinets. Sip a Sazerac in the back garden or read an Anne Rice book on the front porch.

10. Sagittarius (Nov. 22–Dec. 21)
Photo: Courtesy of Washington School House

Idealistic, intellectual, deeply philosophical, gregarious, and athletic, you like to stay active and love to get involved in a hot debate. Sagittarius embodies the concept of strong mind, body, and spirit. For your vacation, you need a complete change of scene, and one where you can be active.

Visit: Park City, Utah, is considered a first-rate winter destination, for the skiing conditions are considered some of the best you will find in any resort in America. You can choose among Park City Mountain, Deer Valley Resort, and Utah Olympic Park. You love to be in places of big sky and tall mountains. Once you arrive you can find yourself on the slopes almost as soon as you change your clothes. Don’t ski? Browse the art galleries and charming shops on Main Street. After a day of skiing or walking, hiking or biking (and you can do this all depending on the season), you’ll be hungry. This is a sophisticated resort town, so the restaurants will be sure to tickle your fancy. Park City has your name on it.

Where to Stay: With only 12 rooms, Washington School House is situated in an old 19th-century school building with elegant white-on-white interiors, oak floors, vintage rugs, and beds dressed with crisp Pratesi linens. After a day on the slopes, there’s also a heated pool and outdoor fire pit where things always stay toasty. And the nearby Western-flared No Name Saloon is perfect for a late-night libation.

11. Capricorn (Dec. 22–Jan. 19)
Photo: Courtesy of Kimpton

Friends describe you as ambitious, goal- and data-oriented, realistic, and practical—a judicious, conservative, cautious risk-taker. Your sign rules all things of historical value, and hence you have a strong drive to preserve and protect what has been achieved in the past. You need a destination that makes you feel like you climbed into a time machine to visit a previous era, if only for a few hours.

Visit: Washington, D.C., would be an ideal place. As the city is steeped in history, you would do well to study up before you go. Of course, you will want to go to the White House, and, if so, you will need to register with the Secret Service weeks ahead of time—check with your travel agent. You will also want to see the majestic Lincoln Memorial. With several new museums, make sure to get tickets far in advance. The critically acclaimed National Museum of African American History and The Museum of the Bible use modern 3-D techniques to bring culture and history to vibrant life. Don’t miss the Newseum, which posts the front page of over 800 daily U.S. newspapers each day. Browse seven floors of fascinating material from both print and broadcast media.

Where to Stay: In the buzzy Penn Quarter, Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco is situated in a former post office and hosts a spacious sprawl of 183 rooms with soaring ceilings and a kaleidoscopic palette of champagne, plum, emerald orange, and royal blue (and Nintendo systems for those so inclined). Drop by the moody Dirty Habit for tabletop fire pits and cocktails.

12. Aquarius (Jan. 20–Feb. 18)
Photo: Courtesy of Four Seasons

Independent, idiosyncratic, and nontraditional, you follow your own drummer, and you don’t particularly care if others agree with you, for you are always ahead of the curve. For you a vacation is a time to learn something new.

Visit: Consider going to Kona, and head to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You can drive between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes and top the day by hiking to the Kilauea Iki Crater by going through the rainforest. Or sign up for the famous Kilauea Hike n’ Glow tour, which will take you well off the beaten path. You can also stand at the rim of Kilauea Caldera to see the rich glowing lava lake inside the Halema’uma’u crater. In Hawaii, you can spin a memory that you will never forget.

Where to Stay: Situated on black lava rock and under the twinkling tiki torches, next to mai tais and dancing hula girls, the Four Seasons Hualali features low-rise bungalows dressed in bamboo, slate, and thatch. Book a room facing the deep-blue Pacific and sneak into the spa for treatments using crushed macadamia nuts.
