Antigua and Barbuda has been plunged into mourning after news broke that former Prime Minister Sir Lester Bird died.

The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) confirmed that Bird passed away around 6 this morning.

Just a few months ago, the former head of government had a leg amputated after his toe became infected.

The islands major hospital was renamed the Sir Lester Bird Mount St John’s Medical Centre (SLBMSJMC) after his stay.

The OPM said all flags across Antigua and Barbuda will be flown at half-mast and the 83-year-old will be given a state funeral.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne commented: "Sincerest condolences to the family of our National Hero, Sir Lester, who transitioned to the great beyond earlier this morning.”

“Sir Lester was a great son of the soil, who contributed significantly to the socio-economic development of our nation. May his soul Rest In Peace and rise in glory."
