Sunday, May 29, 2016, 4:22 PM - Residents who were forced to evacuate because of the Fort McMurray wild fires may soon be able to return home.
Wildland fire suppression operations may continue for several weeks, however the communities around Fort McMurray have stabilized, and the Alberta government has posted an extensive information booklet for Fort McMurray evacuees who plan to return.
Here are the 5 things you need to know about the Fort Murray re-entry.
- It is a voluntary, phased re-entry beginning June 1st
- The re-entry plan is conditional, based on wildfire conditions and safety and will be reviewed up the last minute before re-entry is granted
- Healthy residents can consider returning when the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is 6 or less. The current index for Fort McMurray is considered “low risk”
- There is still a boil water advisory for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo as a precautionary
- The fire danger rating is considered mainly low across the province of Alberta
