These boring cardboard boxes could have ended up in the bin - but a team of imaginative children used them to create castles, pirate ships and fairy tale houses instead!

Fireplace World in St Thomas Road donated the boxes, once used to store fireplace surrounds, to arts group Crafty Kids Huddersfield - and the creative youngsters turned them into objects of fun and fantasy.

Jamie Wreford, from Fireplace World, said: “The children spent a fruitful day developing their imaginative inclinations. They also got a brand new toy out of it, something they made themselves that they can take personal pride in. Not only did this help instil the virtues of hard-work, value and creativity, it also introduced the idea and importance of recycling, a vital concept for future generations to understand.”

• Crafty Kids meets in Springfield Mills, Denby Dale, from Tuesday to Saturday, 9.30am to 4.30pm.
