Beaver Sculpture Removed for Showing Female Genitalia

Seriously, what did they expect? The Star Tribune says a Minnesota city’s bid to brighten up its streets with dozens of beaver statues got mired in controversy when one likeness was removed because it featured what appeared to be “female genitalia.” A crowd carrying “censored” signs gathered yesterday to protest the removal. The city council will convene tomorrow to figure out whether the sculpture can be allowed back in the art show.

The Bemidji Pioneer says the statue was covered with what appears to be a black garbage bag after the city received dozens of phone calls about the offending statue. The paper took an informal poll that reveal most residents believe the statue is inoffensive. (Just a note, the Pioneer requires readers to sign up for a free subscription in order to view content.)

UPDATE July 6: Beaver-related debate expected at town hall meeting tonight.
