New digs add flavour to Old Strathcona

Edmonton restaurant owners are busting ahead with new prospects, despite the economic climate, which is indeed heartening.

The latest is by the proprietors of El Cortez and Have Mercy, two stylish and delicious eateries found on Gateway Boulevard  just north of Whyte Ave. It will be located in the same heritage building (once occupied by Artifacts), and the new space is roomy at 5,000 square feet.

El Cortez co-owners Michael Maxxis, his father, Bill Graham and Maxxis’s partner Melanie Swerdan are excited about the latest expansion. Maxxis says the restaurant will be a completely different concept from El Cortez and Have Mercy, which are themed Mexican and southern styles respectively and provide as much an experience as a meal.

Maxxis says the new restaurant won’t have a theme as such, but will offer a straight-up dining experience in a cool space. The decor will take advantage of the weathered brick on the wall, and the building’s exposed industrial trappings, including sky-high ceilings and ductwork.

Given that the trio’s previous efforts are perhaps the most interesting in the city, there’s much to anticipate in the new restaurant, which Maxxis hopes will be open by June.
