Everything You Need To Know About Jesús Carmona

Ahead of his Sadlers Wells presented performance at Latitude 2019, we’re sharing everything you need to know about flamenco dancing sensation Jesús Carmona.

HE’S BEEN DANCING SINCE HE WAS 7 YEARS OLD

Born in Barcelona in 1985, Carmona began his dance training in La Macarena y el Niño de Morón at just aged seven. He made his professional debut at 14 with the Liceu Theater Orchestra of Barcelona at the Teatro Zorrilla and has gone on to dance with some of Spain’s most prestigious companies, including becoming the principal dancer at the National Ballet of Spain where the Catalan virtuoso stayed for five years.

He’s Won multiple awards

The flamenco star’s dancing prowess hasn’t gone unnoticed as he’s won and been nominated for several awards, including winning the Desplante Prize for Dance in La Unión, the Outstanding Dancer Award of the Flamenco Dance Contest of Madrid, and receiving second prize in the National Flamenco Festival of Cordoba. He was also nominated for three separate awards, including Best Principal Dancer, at Spain’s esteemed MAX awards in 2015.

he fuses traditional and modern dance techniques

In his critically acclaimed show, Impetus, Carmona mixes modern ballet with traditional flamenco and is accompanied by classical Spanish music, whilst also incorporating non-traditional instuments, such as the violin. When he performed the show at the Flamenco Festival in New York, Miguel Marín, the director of the festival, described Jesús as “es un fenómeno” (he’s a phenomenon).

As well as being experienced in ballet and flamenco, Carmona has studied a wide range of dance forms. He has trained in escuela bolera, a traditional Spanish dance influenced by French and Italian 17th century court dances. He has also studied tap with New York tap dancer Jared Grimes, as well as modern dance with the likes of Martha Graham and José Limón.
