The Nokia Lumia 1020 w/ 41-MP PureView + ZEISS Optics

Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop took the stage at the Nokia Zoom Reinvented event in New York City to unveil the much anticipated Nokia Lumia 1020, the company's new flagship smartphone. Yes, the Lumia 1020's centerpiece is the 41-MP auto-focus PureView camera with a huge 1/1.5" BSI sensor, 6-lens ZEISS optics and optical image stabilization. It is coupled with an LED flash and a xenon flash.

At 130.4 mm x 71.4 mm x 10.4 mm, the Lumia 1020 is of the same size as the Lumia 920, except for the large bump on the back. It tips the scales at 158 grams, which makes it lighter than its predecessor. It sports a 4.5-inch 1,280 x 768 Clear Black AMOLED display, protected by Corning's Gorilla Glass 3 and features Nokia's PureMotion HD+ technology for smoother animations. Super Sensitive Touch technology is also present, allowing you to operate the phone with gloves and nails. Above the display there’s a front-facing camera with a wide-angle lens. The Lumia 1020 is powered by the same Snapdragon S4 chipset with a 1.5GHz dual-core Krait CPU as the Nokia Lumia 925. A nice addition is the 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. As usual, Nokia and Microsoft have teamed up and provide 7GB of free SkyDrive storage. No expandable external storage here though. Sorry!

The Lumia 1020's optically stabilized 41-MP image sensor can snap 40-MP and 5-MP photos at the same time – one straight off the sensor and one after Nokia's Super sampling has been applied. It can capture videos of up to 1080p resolution and features lossless zoom. You can zoom in up to 4 times in 1080p Full HD mode and up to 6 times when shooting 720p HD video without sacrificing much in terms of quality. Sound is recorded in stereo and is guaranteed to be crisp and deep thanks to the two wide dynamic range microphones on board.

The Lumia 1020 comes with its Pro Camera and Smart Camera camera lens apps. The new Pro Camera app brings many manual features to the fore. There’s a regular settings page, with control over the dual-shot resolution, grid such as a square, the “golden ratio”, or rule-of-thirds, and aspect ratio, but there’s also a set of radial sliders that are overlaid onto the preview screen itself. With them, you can quickly change exposure (including extra-long exposures for light-trace shots), white balance, ISO, shutter speed, and other key settings. Adjusting the dials shows you in real-time exactly what the impact will be on the final shot.

Connectivity-wise, it has Bluetooth 3.0, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and GPS with Glonass support. Network support includes quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 42Mbps UMTS/HSPA and LTE. It is powered by a 2000mAh battery and supports wireless charging via an accessory cover. The Nokia Lumia 1020 will be available in yellow, white, and black variants. It will hit the US through AT&T on July 26 for $299.99 (on contract) and will roll out to Europe and other countries in the months to come.
