Seattle Art Fair visitors asked, "What is CoCA Sanctuary?"

Good question! Earlier this year our social media manager, Rohena Alam Khan, tagged so many great pictures with #CoCAfam that we did a forehead slap and realized CoCA is way more than just a nonprofit art gallery. We are a community for people of all stripes to share in creativity and the conversations that come from it. The CoCA Board then officially voted in this awesome purpose statement, "CoCA is a space for creative expression, community and inclusivity in contemporary art." We are a passionate bunch, but we have truly seen art change lives for the better. Our goal is to make it accessible for all.

We will highlight this passion and our community at the annual fundraiser so join us at the auction on Sept. 22. Your ticket purchase or sponsorship will help us provide many more opportunities for community to come together and support more artists!

Nura Ibrahim in Gary Hill exhibition

Warm welcome to our new Gallery Manager, Nura Ibrahim!

Nura Ibrahim shined as a Curatorial Intern and we are delighted to bring her on as the second staff to support our exhibitions, performances, and growing community of artists and members. She shared a bit about herself below, but come by the gallery to meet her in person and experience the Gary Hill exhibition for yourself!

"I’m an Ethiopian artist and designer that moved to Seattle four years ago. Working and building communities has always been a priority. While getting my Associates in Science at Seattle Central College, I participated in the Sustainable Agriculture Program and was a Garden Educator Assistant at Cascadia Elementary. I also founded InColor, a support group for women of color to build our community, provide moral support and resources in the area.

I was drawn to CoCA's curatorial team specifically because of their exhibits that aren't afraid to push boundaries in the arts and question ideals. I'm excited to join the community and be part of that bold process, while supporting artists and the many visitors to the gallery."

In addition to Nura and Executive Director, Nichole DeMent, CoCA has a fantastic Board of Directors and a small army of kick-ass volunteers, including some awesome interns.

Watch out for these next great arts leaders!
Sarra Alnaemi, Board and Development Intern

Jillian Cross, Gallery Management Intern
Christyna George, Finance Intern
