GREENSBORO, N.C. — An officer with the Greensboro Police Department has been fired and another has been suspended as the result of the city’s investigation into the department’s response to a student apartment complex.

Police first went to the Sebastian Village Apartments on April 16 while investigating the robbery of a pizza delivery driver.  Police Chief Ken Miller says a K-9 unit responded to the scene on Booker Street and led officers to an apartment at the complex.  Two students from N.C. A&T State University and two students from Bennett College were inside the apartment.

According to a complaint filed against the department, the students claimed officers searched their apartment for drugs and weapons.  Chief Miller says nothing was found and no one was arrested, but officers were called to the complex a second time on April 27 due to a noise complaint.

Miller says the second response concerned a graduation party which more than 100 people attended.  Four women were arrested “for various minor charges associated with their behavior on the scene,” he said.

No firearms were drawn, but an officer did pull out his stun gun during the incident, Miller said.  The students claimed the officer used excessive force.

The police department conducted an internal investigation and turned its findings over to the city council.  As a result, one officer was suspended for violating a general conduct rule for “failing to report his use of force,” Miller said.

Miller says another officer was fired for violating the department’s “truthfulness directive” during the investigation.

Six other officers who responded to the apartments were not punished.
