Community comes together to raise money for Baby Superman
Cars wrapped around Mariscos Altamar this morning.
People were waiting in line to get a super car wash to help the baby we call "Baby Superman" -- or Tony Vasquez, Jr.
'I've been following this story on KOAT's Facebook page and what a good cause," said John Francis who had his car washed.
The 8-month-old was born with a backwards heart. He's been recovering from heart surgery and his family has relocated from Albuquerque to the Ronald McDonald house in Denver so he can see the best doctors.
His friends and family hope the funds from the car wash will help with medical expenses.
"And if I'm in a situation where I can help out a little bit, I've got a few bucks that I might waste on something I didn't need anyway, I might as well donate to a good cause,” Morris Gaite who donated to the family.
Superman’s dad says recovery was going well until Friday.
"Oh, what a roller coaster, I got out on Thursday and then Friday morning I was rushed to the emergency room because my oxygen dropped really low," said the child's dad, Tony Vasquez.
Doctors aren't sure what went wrong.
"There's a couple procedures they can do and they can find out if it's the blood vessels in and around his heart closing," he said.
If the little guy hasn't recovered on his own by Monday, he may go under the knife again.
"That's one of the main reasons we decided to do the car wash, so that we could help them in any way that we can -- even if it's just a little bit," said Kara Craig, who hosted the car wash.
