RE100 companies set to double in 2016
RE100 companies set to double in 2016
17th May 2016

If you’ve been looking into renewable energy for a while now, you’ll probably have come across RE100. The collaborative, global initiative, which sees influential businesses committing to a 100% renewable energy future, is huge right now in the world of renewables and looks set to grow. In fact, the number of firms on board is set to double by the end of 2016 – proving that things in the renewable energy world are about to get big.

RE100: What to expect in 2016

At present, 58 companies have joined the RE100 and made a pledge to transition to 100% renewable energy. According to The Climate Group’s Mark Kenber, the number of companies taking this challenge is set to grow and reach more than 100 by the end of the year. More companies are putting clean energy and low carbon solutions first while seeing the benefits the switch to renewables can bring financially.

Most of those in the RE100 are 50% of the way to meeting their targets while some have already reached 100%. Just some of companies that are part of this initiative include homeware giant IKEA, fashion retailer H&M, automobile manufacturer BMW Group, and telecommunications leader BT.

About the benefits of a renewable energy future, Joanna Yarrow from IKEA says:

“It gives us a lot of capacity to insulate ourselves from price rises and fluctuations so we can take control and plan our business into the future.”

RE100 members are also set to benefit from knowledge-sharing workshops and webinars, helping them to increase the pace of their transition.

According to RE100 Campaign Director at The Climate Group, Emily Farnworth, those that are progressing more easily are the companies with smaller power requirements operating in the US or Europe. In both of these locations, renewable electricity options are more readily accessible, making that switch really quite easy.
