Useful Dates, Anniversaries, Holidays & Commemorations
This section features numerous governmental links for emergency, non-emergency and research use. As well, we list hundreds of notable dates, anniversaries, national and religious holidays as well as commemorations and celebrations for dozens of countries around the world.

Other links that are available in this section include the following:

  • Governmental links are those sites that are produced and sponsored by various government authorities. These are useful for emergency assistance for travelers.

  • Press & Media links are those hosted by various press, media and news organizations around the world. These links can help in pre-trip safety planning as well as providing useful in-country political, environmental and social information.

  • NGO links are those hosted by non-governmental organizations. These may be helpful in emergency situations.

  • Road Conditions features links to road and highway conditions and provides emergency travel advisories for all 50 US states and 10 Canadian provinces based on information provided by their respective Departments of Transportation.

  • Calculations provides links to useful calculations relating to health, safety, medical and travel issues.

As we discuss in Living Safely: Travel, savvy travelers may wish to avoid holidays or anniversaries of a religious or political nature as they often become flash points for people around which to rally and cause riots and other dangers. Of course, many people want to travel to a particular area precisely because of the specific occasion, anniversary or festival but they should still take care and understand that these times can be very dangerous due to issues of overcrowding, political instability, security hassles and disease outbreaks.

Due to the fact that large crowds of a particular demograph or psychograph are typical at festivals, events and other occasions, they are particular attractive for terrorists and others seeking to maximize their mayhem. In general, the larger the crowd the greater the danger.

Important notes about this page:

  • Holidays and other notable dates listed in italics indicate they are movable events. Often specific events are based on non-Western date systems and calendars. Consequently they appear to move from year to year when compared to the traditional Western calendar system.

  • Other italicized holidays are fixed to a certain day in the Western week (the first Monday of the month, for example) but change their calendar date every year.

  • Some religious festivals may begin earlier or finish later than indicated owing to local interpretations, time changes, celestial variations, cultural differences among the various practicing communities around the world, and other factors. If traveling near to these dates, it is wise to verify specific dates in the destination country or area.

  • Always confirm dates in your journey. For their safety and health travelers are, at all times, urged to consult Web sites of their respective governments for travel advice and safety advisories. Links to these sites can be found on our Governmental links page.

We note the following important religious and national holidays, major events and key anniversaries around the world this year:
