WomenHeart of Miami Champions & Virtual Support Network connecting from a distance
As we head into a season of thanks, WomenHeart would like to express appreciation to our amazing volunteers. This has been a trying year for most, but through it all WomenHeart Champions have continued to support our mission to improve the health and quality of life of women living with or at risk of heart disease, and to advocate for their benefit. Because of their resilience and adaptability, they have transitioned to the virtual space and continued to lead support network meetings, provide one-on-one support and educate their communities. All while tending to their own heart health and managing life through a pandemic where their condition puts them at greater risk for COVID-19.
Though we truly missed the in-person interactions, our Champions, Science & Leadership Faculty and WomenHeart staff watched our ranks grow in October with a newly trained class of WomenHeart Champions. Within weeks of graduation, some have already participated in live online events telling their heart story, reached out to their local media and are running support networks. As we continue to engage and prepare them for their new role, we are happy to welcome them to our family of heart sisters.
We would also like to give remembrance to heart sisters who have passed on this year. Alicia Roberts c/o 2017, Janis Eason-Moore c/o 2005, Patricia Gauerke c/o 2002, Rhoda Kitzes c/o 2014, Sylvia Rackow c/o 2002, Carol Ann Steoger c/o 2003, Marianne Lawrence c/o 2006 and Phyllis Mackison c/o 2018. They held WomenHeart very near and dear to their hearts, made it part of their life’s purpose and left a lasting legacy of what it means to be a heart sister. Collectively, they have touched the lives of many women with and at risk of heart disease since becoming a WomenHeart Champion.
If this year has taught us anything, it’s that connection and compassion are essential, even if we are physically apart from one another. Our Champions delivered that to thousands of women across the country this year, as they do every year. While we move towards the close of 2020, let us all reflect on our purpose, uplift one another and look to a brighter 2021.
