Join hands to protect our oceans and beaches
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Several beaches will host "Hands Across the Sand" events Saturday.
At 12 p.m. EST May 19, people will join hands for 15 minutes on beaches and parks around the world to demonstrate support for protecting our coasts from oil and gas development. Those concerned about the potential impacts offshore drilling might have on the East Coast are organizing events at every Brunswick County Beach.
Last year, the event at Sunset Beach drew the largest number of participants on the East Coast. This year, every Brunswick County beach is expecting to to draw a large crowd for its event. Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle Beach are in a friendly competition to see which has the longest chain down the beach.
In Sunset Beach, gather at the gazebo; In Ocean Isle Beach, in front of the community center at First and Monroe Streets; in Holden Beach, gather on the beach at the Jordan Blvd. access; In Oak Island, gather at the 46th Street cabana.

There will also be a "Hands Across the Sand" event in Surf City at 10:30 a.m. at Roland Avenue Beach Access. To the right of 102 North Shore Drive. Between Buddies and the Welcome Center. Gather and hold hands for 15 minutes.
A guest speaker will join WECT's Kim Ratcliff on WECT News Now on WECT.com at 11 a.m. to talk more about the events in Brunswick County.
