Scientists have found evidence of bubbles of frozen methane being released deep below the surface of the Arctic Ocean.

The discovery is significant because methane has a much greater warming effect than CO2 and the warming sea and melting permafrost in the Arctic may eventually release vast quantities.

However, the Russian and Swedish researchers cautioned that the results from their expedition in the Laptev Sea were preliminary and would need to be checked and confirmed before being submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.

On their Facebook page, the team from International Siberian Study Shelf Expedition wrote: “This may be the first comprehensive observation of active release from methane hydrates on the Siberian-Arctic slope system.
