Description

Join us for a Complimentary Breakfast and STEM Presentation.

As a Spokane STEM Network Partner and local employer and business leader in our community, Itron cordially invites you to attend our event highlighting Resourcefulness: The Energy Water Nexus and Investing in Next Gen STEM, which was recently recognized by the White House for innovation of STEM education.

Featuring: Dr. Michael E. Webber of the University of Texas at Austin and Sharelynn Moore, VP of Corporate Marketing and Public Affairs, Itron. Learn more about Dr. Webber here, or read his recent feature in The New York Times discussing water systems.

About the Event: Itron recently partnered with University of Texas professor Michael E. Webber, an expert on the energy-water nexus, to create and distribute and interactive digital curriculum that teaches key concepts about energy and water for K-12, colleges, industry and general public. The goal of these tools is to improve energy and water literacy, encourage conservation and resourcefulness, and inspire the next generation of innovators.

This curriculum will combine text with multimedia components, such as audio and video, along with dozens of interactive exercises, maps and games. Working with community partners nationwide, Itron will make the app-based curriculum available free of charge with a goal of reaching at least 10,000 students in 2016, and plans to expand globally in 2017.

The Resourcefulness App is being created in line with College and Career Readiness/Common Core Standards, including Next Generation Science Standards, Advanced Placement (AP) Environmental Science and International Baccalaureate Environmental Systems and Societies. The material is designed to complement and enhance existing curriculum and lesson plans with fully developed teaching guides.

About the Speaker: As Deputy Director of the Energy Institute, Co-Director of the Clean Energy Incubator, Josey Centennial Fellow in Energy Resources, and Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Michael E. Webber trains the next generation of energy leaders at the University of Texas at Austin through research and education at the convergence of engineering, policy, and commercialization. He has authored more than 200 publications, holds 4 patents, and serves on the advisory board for Scientific American. His television special Energy at the Movies is currently in national syndication on PBS stations, and his massive open online course (MOOC) “Energy 101” closed with record results in December. Webber holds a B.S. and B.A. from UT Austin and M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Stanford. He was honored as an American Fellow of the German Marshall Fund, an AT&T Industrial Ecology Fellow, and on three separate occasions by the University of Texas for exceptional teaching.
