Igår delades denna länk på Facebook. Den gick till en sida som kort och kärnfullt presenterade trettiotre anledningar till varför feminism behövs. @kvinnohat läste den, älskade den. Men på eftermiddagen försvann plötsligt delningar av länken från folks facebook-profiler. Hela konversationer var plötsligt borta. Den som försökte dela länken fick felmeddelandet att ”The content you’re trying to share includes a link that’s been blocked for being spammy or unsafe”.

Facebook är idag den i särklass största och mest betydelsefulla plattform som finns för att sprida budskap, dela med sig av bilder m.m. Det behöver väl knappast ens sägas. Facebook havdar också att dess "mission is to make the world more open and connected. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what's going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them." (se t.ex.http://investor.fb.com/).

Göra världen mer öppen och sammanlänkad. Dela och ge uttryck för ämnen som är viktiga.

Det är uppenbart att Facebook har en minst sagt skev syn på innebörden av öppenhet, och på vilka ämnen som är viktiga. Otaliga sidor med utpräglat sexistiskt, misogynt och antifeministiskt innehåll tillåts vara kvar, trots anmälningar från facebookanvändare. Bilder på sexuellt objektifierade kvinnor, på sexualiserat våld mot kvinnor, våldtäktsskämt m.m. är enligt Facebook helt okej. Samtidigt som privata bilder på ammande mammor, sommarfirande "vanliga" kvinnor utan badräkt, anatomiska illustrationer av kvinnligt könsorgan m.m. tas bort för att de anses strida mot Facebooks policy. Facebooks representation av kvinnor överlag innebär att kvinnokroppen tillåts vara naken så länge den är sexualiserad och objektifierad. När en kvinna är naken på sina egna villkor, på ett icke-sexuellt sätt, tas bilderna bort. Inte minst censureras sådana bilder och budskap som har för avsikt att sprida kunskap om kvinnokroppen, om kvinnors rättigheter och om feminism. Sidor som arbetar utifrån en feministisk övertygelse tas regelmässigt bort eller sätts i karantän. Det är på intet sätt okej.

Facebook har uppenbarligen inte lyssnat överhuvudtaget.

Facebook, nu har vi fått nog!

Vi undertecknande kräver att ni omedelbart upphör med den misogyna och antifeministiska tillämpningen av Facebooks användarregler. Vi kräver att ni tar det ansvar som det innebär att inneha en sådan maktposition som Facebook har. Ni har inte rätten att välja att låta bli.

Under kvällen den 14 maj blockerades även adressen trettiotreanledningar.squarespace.com, dit hemsidan flyttades när den första adressen blockerades. 

 

 

Yesterday this link was shared on Facebook. It went to a site that shortly and informatively presented 33 reasons why feminism is needed. We read it, we loved it. But later in the afternoon the link was removed and blocked from facebook-profiles, whole conversations were gone. Anyone who tried to share the link received a message that read ”The content you’re trying to share includes a link that’s been blocked for being spammy or unsafe”.

Facebook is today the biggest and most important platform that can be used to spread statements, knowledge and pictures. Facebook also states that their “mission is to make the world more open and connected. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what's going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them.” (http://investor.fb.com/)

It is obvious that Facebook, to say the least, have an erratic viewing on the meaning of openness and on what subjects that matter. Countless of pages with pronounced sexist, misogynist and anti-feminist content is allowed, even though they have been reported by users. Pictures of sexualized and objectified women, of sexualized violence against women and rapejokes are according to the Facebook policy completely fine. While private pictures of breastfeeding mothers, “ordinary” women skinny-dipping, anatomical illustrations of the female genitalia and more are removed. The representation of women overall on Facebook means that the female body is allowed to be naked as long as it is sexualized and objectified. If a woman is naked on her own terms, in a non-sexualized manner the picture is removed. Even pictures with the purpose of spreading knowledge of the female body, about women’s rights, and about feminism in censored. Pages that work from a feminist point of view is regularly removed or put in quarantine. This is in no way acceptable!

Facebook apparently have not heard us at all.

We have had enough of this.
We who are signing demand that you immediately stop your misogynist and anti-feminist application of the Facebook policy. We demand that you take responsibility for what it means to be in the position of power that Facebook is in. You cannot deny us this.
