HELL'S KITCHEN — Students who want to learn how to deal with disasters like Hurricane Sandy will soon have a home in a new high school coming to Hell's Kitchen in September.
The Urban Assembly School for Emergency Management will educate its incoming freshman class of 108 students using real-world training with professional partners that handle catastrophes like the one New Yorkers experienced last fall.
According to Department of Education documents, students at the new school will be able to participate in career training, internships and even emergency simulations with FEMA, the Red Cross and the Department of Homeland Security.
"With help from our partners, we develop curriculum and activities in Emergency Management that create a sense of personal responsibility and empowerment among our students, parents, and staff," the school's overview said.
"Students will develop specific leadership skills, learn how to use mapping and emergency response software, CPR, and recognizing and responding to hazardous materials as a few examples."
The school, one of 78 announced Tuesday by the Bloomberg administration, will be located at 439 W. 49th St. — the same building that currently houses the High School of Graphic Communication Arts. The location will also be home to the new Hell's Kitchen Success Academy in September.
Before the school year kicks off, freshmen will participate in a summer orientation at the American Red Cross headquarters, documents said.
Students at the school will be able to select one of three "majors" meant to lead to a specific career in the field: Emergency Management, Response and Recovery, and Emergency Technology Communications. As a Career and Technical Education School, students will receive special industry and college-approved credit on the final diploma.
The school will host three information sessions at its campus at 439 W. 49th St. for interested parents and students: April 8 at 6 p.m., April 20 at 11 a.m. and April 30 at 6 p.m.
