'Scooby-Doo' Character Velma Is Officially A Lesbian In New Movie; Twitter Is Happy

Velma, the beloved "Scooby-Doo" character, is finally depicted as part of the LGBTQ community in Warner Bros.' new Halloween movie, "Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo."

Clips from the new animated film, which was released on Amazon Prime Video Tuesday, have so far received positive comments from Twitter users who are more than happy to see the bespectacled Mystery Inc. member falling in love with another female character, a costume designer named Coco Diablo.

"OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY," a Twitter user wrote as she shared a short clip of Velma admiring Coco, whom the famous character describes as someone who wears "incredible eyeglasses, amazing turtleneck" and is "obviously brilliant and loves animals."

The tweet has so far amassed more than 200,000 likes.

"We have won. Velma is a lesbian with impeccable tastes," a netizen who retweeted the post noted.

Meanwhile, another netizen shared a clip that shows Velma's glasses melting after getting enamored by Coco.

"Do you know how hard it is for me to like someone other than myself?" Coco asks Velma in the clip. The latter can then be seen desperately trying to find her glasses.

In the clip's caption, the netizen wrote, "Velma melted her glasses off simping for this girl, I'm crying."

It has been an open secret among fans of the mystery animated series that Velma is gay.

James Gunn, who wrote the live-action "Scooby-Doo" films in the early 2000s, and Tony Cervone, who served as supervising producer on the "Mystery Incorporated" series, were clear about Velma's sexuality, though it was not made official onscreen, according to Variety.

Gunn said in 2020 that Velma was originally written as a queer character in the live-action films but Warner Bros. Pictures turned down the idea. He wrote about his attempts to make Velma "explicitly gay" in a now-deleted tweet, which Insider managed to capture.

"I tried! In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script," Gunn wrote at the time. "But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel)."

Meanwhile, during the 2020 Pride Month, Cervone wrote on Instagram, "We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago. Most of our fans got it. To those that didn't, I suggest you look closer."

"Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo" will be aired on Cartoon Network on Oct. 14.
