I have heard so many great things about Shandong and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Growing up eating at Chinese restaurants, I always found that my favorite restaurants always made amazing handmade noodles. Shandong is no different
Their chow mein with house-made noodles were top tier. I'm already thinking about the next time I can go back to try them again. The salt and pepper squid, green beans, and beef dish were also all phenomenal. It's some of the best Chinese food I've had in a while. All the portions were big and for a great price.
The inside of this restaurant is always busy and bustling and there is usually a wait time, but it is so worth it.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 2, 20241 check-in
I've been in DT Oakland for the past decade or so for a conference every year, and my friend recommended this spot. I'm glad to finally check this out.
AMBIANCE:
Parking: Street parking, usually metered parking.
Seating: Great for groups. Room for about 70 people with good groups for 5 or more.
Vibes: Welcome to Downtown Oakland. You're close to a lot of other good eatery spots, historical monuments, and other pleasant sightseeing places. The place itself is nothing too flashy. It's a grit and grind area, but they are unapologetically proud of their social recognitions. There's nice pop music in the background. Great place for a food adventure or family/groups.
FOOD:
Deluxe Combination Chow Mein (Recommend)
This is a wonderful medley of beef, bok choy, bean sprouts, onions and chicken with their hand-cut signature noodles. The noodles were truly one of a kind, from their appearance to their soft/chewy texture and nutty flavor. The sauce was reasonably mixed around, which made it pretty savory. Be sure to ask for some hot sauce!
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
Great! Ordered for pick up and they were prepared!
TL; DR OVERALL:
4.5 Stars. Fantastic! Good food, reasonable prices, and a calming experience. Yes there are lot of food choices here but their noodles really do stand out. I appreciate the delicious food and their hard work. Wishing the best to Charles Hung, family, and team on their business!
TIPS:
* Too many choices! Bring a friend or two to mix and match

As someone who isn't Chinese, but is part Asian - I thoroughly enjoy this food. I always leave absolutely stuffed. The portions are great, the food is delicious, the service is quick.
You will most likely have a wait if you come at night but it's never ridiculously long.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 154254603Feb 21, 2024Updated review2 check-ins
I think this 5 item deal is such a good one that I had to circle back for lunch with the Team.
5 for $59.95
We had:
Beef and broccoli
Prawn with green beans
Fish in wine sauce
Shandong Chicken
Eggplant in Szechuan sauce
White rice and Deluxe Combo chow mien with house noodles
Parking was an adventure but Service was fast and friendly. Food came out fast with fresh hot vegetables-yum!
Great experience.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 2Feb 17, 2024Previous reviewI really enjoyed dinner tonight.
The food was hot, fresh vegetables, and tasty. A great deal with 5 items for $59.95.
The place was pretty packed and by the time we were finishing our meal there was a line out the door. I can see them moving to a bigger location.
We ordered War Won Ton soup, house made noodles with shrimp, dumplings, and 5 item deal of beef and broccoli, salt and pepper prawns, salt and pepper pork chops, Shan Dong chicken, and prawns with string beans.
No complaints about the food! Tasty as heck! I appreciate the hot tea on the table.
The place is a little chaotic. It's loud, busy, a little cramped by the front area. The restroom area is unkept and very slippery to walk to the restroom and even inside- like hold onto the wall slippery however it didn't take away from the food being good and I am putting them on a short list to return too. - Mar 7, 2024
I visited Shandong Restaurant last Friday with my husband and honestly I was a bit disappointed. This place has great reviews and there was a huge line, but the food was very average but very affordable.
Their service was very quick and the place was super busy. I could see at least 30 door dash orders lined up in-front of me.
What I really liked here was the Mongolian Beef and the Shandong Chicken, the Shandong Chicken was one of their best selling food items, I could see one on almost every table. The chicken was fried but it actually wasn't that sweet, the chicken was one of my favourite dishes and even the beef was very flavourful.
I was disappointed with the Lamb dish, it was undercooked to be honest and too rubbery to eat. We didn't like the Sesame Pasta Noodles as well, it's one of their most famous dishes and we didn't really enjoy it.
Overall, I thought this place is a hit or a miss.
I did enjoy some of the dishes though!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Apr 1, 2024Updated review
Came in early on a Wednesday and there was no wait! We went with some hand cut noodles chow mein, Shan Dong dumplings, chicken with broccoli, and the chive-filled pancakes. The waitress warned us about the wait for the pancakes, but we already knew about that. Everything was great, but the chive-filled pancakes still really takes the top prize. It is nice and crispy and a great filling. Definitely worth the wait!

This time we went with the Shan Fong Dumplings, cashew chicken, meat sauce with hand cut noodles, and the special chow mein with crispy noodles. All were fantastic and the hand cut noodles were nice and chewy.

No other hand-pulled noodles in town could compare!!! Pay the extra $1 for fresh noodles they make in-house, right up front.
My go-tos are the green beans, spicy fish in black sauce, coconut shrimp, and of course the sesame noodles are a must.
Cons: I'd watch the hours since they close for lunch, and parking in the area is a bit tough.
I'd give a 10/5 if I could!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 1 - Apr 26, 2024
Shandong is phenomenal. This spot is consistently packed with a line, so would recommend picking up for a better experience, otherwise be prepared for a wait on the street & crowded restaurant once seated. The dishes are truly delicious and really one of the best often overlooked spots in the Bay Area. If you're looking for a casual spot in Oakland - this is it!

This place has been around for decades. My friends all been recommending this place to me. I was skeptical at first, because it felt like it was meant to serve Non-Chinese people.
Randomly I got a Uber Eats deal for this place, and I decided to try it out. And I was very pleasantly surprised.
As a Chinese person, this place definitely aced the test. The eggplant was phenomenal. Their hand made noodles was so chewy mixed with the sesame sauce was heavenly.
And their prices were so reasonable at this day and age for the bay area! I finally understand the hype and I definitely a huge fan now.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 1 - Dec 18, 2023
Shandong is a must try and Oakland staple in Chinatown. It's super authentic and the noodles are hand pulled tops it all. The shandong is the perfect orange chicken. It's saucy and crispy at the same time.
The spicy chow mein w hand pulled noodles are definitely a must try. Everything comes out hot and fresh.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1
