Up to 25 warships are set to visit Liverpool to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic.

The city was home to the Western Approaches Command, which co-ordinated the effort to protect merchant shipping from the German navy in World War II.

The ships will visit as part of a series of events to mark the anniversary from 24-28 May.

A cathedral service will take place on 26 May.

The events in Liverpool follow similar commemorations in London and Londonderry.

Thousands of war veterans are expected to take part in the Liverpool events, organised by the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and Liverpool City Council.

Wendy Simon, Liverpool City Council cabinet member for culture and tourism, said: "Liverpool is delighted to be hosting the national commemoration of the Battle of the Atlantic.

"We have a great maritime tradition and this final commemoration will be a memorable and moving event which will honour those who took part in the longest campaign of the Second World War."
