Congress may not be big on President Trump’s four-point immigration plan but those who watched his State of the Union address liked it, according to a CBS News poll.
A striking 72 percent of respondents said they favored the proposals the president laid out on immigration, compared to just 28 percent who didn’t like them.
The same poll also found viewers overwhelmingly thought the president was striking a unifying tone, 81 percent to 19 percent.
The poll was skewed toward Trump supporters, with 52 percent of respondents identifying as such. Another 32 percent said they were Trump opponents, while the rest said they were in between.
Still, the overwhelming support for the president’s immigration plan suggests he’s landed on a middle ground between the hard left, which wants a generous legalization for illegal immigrant “Dreamers” without any substantive changes to enforcement, and conservatives, who want strict enforcement without granting citizenship rights to illegal immigrants.
Mr. Trump’s four-point plan, laid out in more detail in Tuesday’s State of the Union speech, would do both sides. It includes full legal status for 1.8 million illegal immigrants, demands $25 billion for a border wall, proposes ending the visa lottery that gives away immigration passes, and would limit the chain of family migration to spouses and minor children, cutting categories for adult children, siblings and parents.
