Smoke free zones expanded in public areas
West Sacramento is making it harder for smokers to light up in public places.
The sky blue signs declaring the area a “smoke free zone” went up Monday at parks and bus stops throughout the city.
Here's a closer look at the new no smoking ordinance:
Where can’t I smoke?
Smoking is not allowed at city offices, parks, recreation areas, playgrounds, picnic areas, sports areas, walking paths, gardens, hiking trails, bike paths, swimming pools, community centers, senior centers, meeting or conference facilities, child care facilities, public parking lots and their adjacent sidewalks.
Additionally, smoking is prohibited within 20 feet of public transportation shelters, such as bus stops.
Where can I smoke?
West Sacramento allows smoking in bars where permitted, private homes, motel and hotel rooms where permitted, retail tobacco stores, most conference or meeting rooms and bingo parlors.
What counts as smoking?
Smoking includes the use or possession of any product which emits smoke.
That includes electronic cigarettes, tobacco cigarettes, herbal cigarettes, marijuana cigarettes and any other type of cigarette, pipe or smoking device.
Why did the council pass this ordinance?
The city said by regulating smoking in certain public places, the ordinance protects public health and welfare.
It strikes a balance between the needs of smokers and nonsmokers and recognizes that where these interests conflict, the need to breath smoke-free air has priority.
What happens if I break the rules?
Any person violating the smoking ordinance is guilty of a misdemeanor. They can be fined up to $500 and could face up to six months in jail.
