Asking about these clothing subscription services for a friend (that friend being me, myself and I, LOL). It dawned on me the other day that I really should get help with my wardrobe situation, because it’s been in dire straights for, oh, about two years?
Basically, my pre-baby clothes don’t fit anymore, and I haven’t been wanting to spend the time or money to update my wardrobe to fit my post-Connor body.
Not to say that I’m walking around in the daylight hours in pajama pants or tees covered in spaghetti sauce and with holes in the armpits (at least not all the time), but I realized that I definitely have a tendency to dress like a college student who’s woken up late and just threw on whatever tee shirt and jeans were on top of the clean pile.
Anyway, I have some friends who love Stitch Fix and others who love Trunk Club, so I’m having a hard time deciding which one to go with. Have you tried either one? do you have another recommendation? Which one do you love and why? I could use the help.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S.

I tried Stitch fix for 3 months and I never felt like the contents got any better (& the prices seemed iffy for the quality). I trust Trunk Club a bit more because it’s backed by Nordstrom, and if you live near one, you can also meet in person at one of their locations and get styled that way. But again, I think price point should be considered because it’s Nordstrom, so you know you’ll be paying a bit more when you buy something. I think your decision would depend on whether you’re upgrading certain pieces or doing a lot all at once.

I’ve had Stitch Fix for about four months now, and I love it. I think the key is to be as specific as possible about your likes/dislikes when filling out your style profile at the beginning. My first two boxes were “Ok,” my next two boxes were great. Also, once you find a stylist that you feel like really gets your style, you can request to keep her. After my second box I requested a different stylist and got one that has been hitting the nail on the head every single time. I always leave her messages about what I liked/disliked, in the box, what I want more of, etc. Right now she and I are working on building me a capsule wardrobe based around my favorite colors. We have even narrowed down certain brands that work well for my body type. All in all, I highly recommend it.

I’ve been doing Stitch fix for about a year, I get them quarterly or space it out further. I love most of the items I get, and usually end up keeping the whole box. I have had some duds though, but it’s just such a fun surprise. Two of my friends and I basically get them around the same time because it’s so fun.

It sounds like a fun thing to try. Especially appealing for someone like me who is pressed for time, could use some style intervention and lives in the sticks. 🙂 I was just thinking that I need to get some actual work clothes for my upcoming trip. Since I can wear whatever I want in my everyday life, my business and business casual wardrobe has become quite limited (and dated and ill fitting!). Looking forward to see which you choose and how you like it! And, oh definitely TGIF!!
Rachel says
How fun! Looking forward to your reviews of whatever you choose! I haven’t tried either one, but I have a couple friends who have tried stitch fix and liked it. I think I’d rather have trunk club because you get more pieces and I love Nordstrom. Why not do both for a couple months and then choose?
Karen says
That’s a good idea, Rachel!
GB says
I do both! I usually get Trunk Club once a season and Stitch Fix a little more regularly (depending on my budget at any given time). I have a 3-year-old and the convenience of trying on clothes at home can’t be beat! I say try them both and see what you think.
Karen says
That’s a great idea, GB!
So, I took my two-year old daughter shopping with me a few times and there have been many dicy moments when she’s almost escaped underneath the door while I was half dressed, OMG!
Kate says
OMG! I would freak out for sure! Since I’ve had kids, I order online (multiple sizes and colors) and return what I don’t like at the mall. Lately, my mall visits have only been to return stuff. My older dtr tolerates Sephora be I paint her nails with the sample polishes and also draw something in her hand with the colorful eyeshadows. The sales people are almost always accommodating.
Karen says
Honestly there have been a few occasions when I was *this close* to running out into public in just my underwear because the kid moves FAST. LOL
It’s been a while since I’ve taken Connor to Sephora because now that she’s no longer in a baby carrier all she wants to do is touch everything! How old are your kids?

I’ve had Stitch Fix more than 3 years and my stylist is ah-mazing. I highly recommend Stitch Fix. I will tell you though the key is to keep your Pinterest page to around 20-30 items and change it for each fix. I do every other month and I love it!! 🙂 I get compliments all of the time.
Karen says
Hi Leah,
Oh, I didn’t know there was a Pinterest element in the mix! I can see how that could help a stylist understand your personal style a little better though. I have a good friend who uses the service and loves it, too, btw.

I haven’t used Stitch Fix in awhile but I’ve been using Trunk Club for over a year now and I adore it. They don’t always get it 100% but I feel that it’s more tailored towards your wants, needs and style. I can find something in Nordstrom or online and send it to my stylist and 9 times out of 10 she’ll include it in my box. It’s headache free and I’ve found some amazing wardrobe staples!
Karen says
Hi Brooke,
Cool. I’ve always liked shopping at Nordstrom (just don’t really have the time to do it). Thanks for the input!
Joy says
I’ve done both. I’ve done stitch fix for maybe 2-3 years. I get two or three boxes a year and I LOVE them. I feel like they really get my style! I’ve gotten 2 trunk club boxes and while they sure sent me a lot of clothes, it wasn’t “me” at all. I am 33 and I felt like they were clothes for a 21 year old and her lifestyle. I kept 1 thing from each box, and sent back like 10-12 things each time. I found the quantity of stuff in the trunk club box to be overwhelming.
Karen says
Hi Joy,
Thanks for your input. I have a good friend who uses Stitch Fix and loves it!

I was very unhappy with my Stitch Fix experience. I tried to be very clear in my profile: “I like clothes that are dapper, trim, clean-lined, and practical, with no fuss or frills. Imagine Han Solo but female and that’s my look.”
The clothes they sent me included lace, sheer layers, pants with no pockets, and tops that shrank to unwearably small even when washed in cold and air dried according to the directions. I canceled after about four shipments.

I’ve tried both, two Stitch Fixes and one Trunk Club so far. I kept one item from first Fix and two from the second, and nothing from Trunk Club. I was so disappointed in TC because, being backed by Nordstom, I expected much higher quality. The quality was poor, the fit was terrible, and nothing matched my style. The stylist knows the customer’s age, so I expected age-appropriate items but the clothes were way too young for me.
My Fixes haven’t been perfect but are good. I would have kept more items, but they were too similar to things I own! Quality is good and aligned to the prices.

I used Stich Fix several times last year & loved it. My very first fix they styled me for my cousins wedding and I looked & felt great! Also the fit is amazing, I’ve always had a hard time finding jeans that fit my pear bottom shape but they seemed to nail it! The only reason I canceled was because I switched careers and get paid a lot lower now, making it unaffordable. Each fix cost me on average $150-200. I do plan to go back to them once my paychecks get back to where they used to be. Can’t wait to read your reviews on whichever one you decide!

Hate stitch fix. Seems like with my attempts, they just put a bunch of items in a box. You would be better off going to TJ Maxx for 5 minutes and grabbing random items from the racks near-ish your size. I also thought the price-point was too high for the quality and a lot of things felt too “young” for me. I am 42 and don’t want to dress like I am 60, but I also am not fooling anyone either. 😉
I have tried trendsend, which I thought was better and also thredup goody boxes, which could be fun and a good value. I want to do trunk club or allume, but have not yet…

I’ve had subscriptions to Stitch Fix and Trunk Club for 6 months. A lot of the above comments reflect how I feel. I am 58 and even though I have repeatedly told both SF
and TC, they keep sending super ripped jeans. They were still sending summer clothes until last month. And despite my pleas, there are at least two cardigans from both companies in every package. I had hoped to get some more funky clothes, but so far, almost everything they send could be found at T.J. Maxx for half the price. I’m giving them another month to try to get it right.

Hi Karen!! Someone I worked with suggested I get a subscription to Le Tote. It’s like Stitch Fix, but less expensive. I never got around to doing it though. I’m more of a Marshalls/TJ Maxx shopper, but I was intrigued by Stitch Fix and Le Tote.

I don’t think I have ever heard of either of them, it seems they are an American thing only. Though I remember I read that Zalando started offering a similar service recently.

I’ve done Stitch Fix for a couple of years (once a quarter) and I love it! I have no time to shop, except online. Once my stylist got honed-in on my style, size and taste, she nails it every time. Plus, I try on and like things I would never touch in a store! I especially love the jeans and purses I have gotten.
CynthiaCC says
I’ve gotten 6 boxes from Stitchfix, but I stopped about a year ago. Too speedy for the quality of what you get. I’ve noticed that a lot of the pieces I got from them are now pilling, weirdly stretched, or just looking worn. Bad fabric. And I never kept an entire box, usually just one or two things. Not worth the hassle, ultimately. Nordstrom has free shipping and returns, so you may as well just order a bunch of things from them and then ship back what doesn’t work! I know part of the value is supposed to be the personal styling aspect, but if you already have a good sense of style, why do you need this?
Marianna says
I use Trunk Club quarterly. (You can share you Pinterest with your stylist.) I’ve been using them for over a year now. My only complaints is that I’ve had a few stylists (I’m guessing they find another position or job) and sometimes (usually if it’s a new stylist) the box might be a miss. However, the customer service is great! I’ve had stylists send a box, if the first was a dud, fee free. I’ve also had a couple of items that either got a hole or ripped in the first couple of months and they had me send the item back and refunded me my money. You can send items that you like from Nordstrom to your stylist beforehand and they try to include it in your box. Another newish feature is that when you try everything on and you really like something but you want it in a different size or color, you just exchange it in the size/color you want for free.

Hi Karen,
My 17 year old daughter and I both tried stitch fix. We typically only liked 1-2 things in each box. We also each had a “dud” box. I was disappointed they didn’t improve their picks based on our feedback over the year, so we cancelled. We are getting ready to sign up for Trunk Club now. Interesting to hear people’s feedback.
