One of the coolest SEO jobs around!

HARRY’S COMMENTS: We are working with one of the largest diet and fitness content sites on the Web. The site, which was launched in 2008 by two veteran web entrepreneurs, has been profitable from day one and is growing quickly. The company needs an extraordinary link developer to plan, execute and manage a series of diverse inbound link building initiatives to complement the firm’s ongoing SEO efforts.

The client’s site is a very big content website which gets 75K unique visitors PER DAY — all from organic SEO. Their model is all about exposing viewers to different product and service offerings as they navigate through the site. The company will likely hit $15 million in extremely profitable revenue this year, and they’re growing fast.

Cool entrepreneurial environment.

In the 16 years they’ve worked together, the founders have had a lot of failure – but a lot of success, too. Multiple exits. The culture is very fast paced, and everyone is good at what they do. In this role, you will be working very closely with the founders in a great atmosphere.

The folks who work with the founders are extremely happy to be there. The company has developed its own weight loss product which is produced by a contract manufacturer, and the site acquires on average 300 – 350 customers per day for that product. Additionally, the firm has developed a slew of affiliate deals with companies like Jenny Craig, and there seems to be no end to the ways to monetize this traffic.

Frankly, I love working with clients like this: Constantly scanning the horizon for opportunities to make real money. That’s a talent worth learning, and I’d rather have my son work two years in an environment like this than go to Harvard Business School.

About the Role

We are looking for a grizzled veteran of the link building wars to develop 6 – 12 different, unique, diverse link development initiatives. For example, reaching out to public libraries because they all have a website with a Resources section. Such an initiative would involve identifying what’s important to the guy who runs the links section of each library’s website. What would make him put down what he’s doing and add the link? What are his hot buttons? What does he think is important to the library’s clientele?

Your message to each of these individuals could be as easy as: “Hey, my name is ____ and I see that you run this page on your library’s website, and I noticed that you have a bunch of links to _____. we have a new resource that we think your supporters would enjoy, and we believe it will fit right in with the links you have on your site. All you have to do to link to it is ____ …” Etc.

There are 119,487 libraries in the US — and that’s just one campaign of many.

Your job will be to research and identify high-probability groups to solicit. You’ll develop the best “angle” to approach people within those groups in a way that cuts through the clutter. Eventually this role might require hiring and managing additional staff to handle the pick-and-shovel work. There’s probably a lot of phone work to be done here. Tons of email. You can use direct mail, too. Whatever works.

This job is about 1.) Creating catchy link building campaigns, 2.) Identifying groups to target, 3.) Developing an angle for your pitch, 4.) Cobbling together an approach for each pitch, and 5.) Reaching out to targeted prospects to build links. It involves digging deep to identify the largest affordably reachable pool of prospects who are most likely to link to some piece of content that you have developed, and then devising an interesting way to contact those decision makers to entice them to link to your asset.

Simple but not easy.

As I’m sure you know if you’re familiar with this type of work, normally link building campaigns don’t have a high hit rate. But every library (etc.) that backlinks you will be WORTH IT because the economics of this client’s business are so favorable. You will get a PhD in entrepreneurship with two proven founders as you dream up and roll-out each new campaign.

Earlier this week I spent 65 minutes jawing about technical SEO with one of these founders. At the end of that call I wished that we’d recorded it for candidates. It was a real magic show! Both of these founders are extremely humble, relatable guys. Plus their knowledge of online marketing and ecommerce runs a mile deep.
