More than four decades after opening their stromboli and pizza palace on San Jose’s Monterey Road, the Di Maggio family has expanded to a second location in the city.

Tony Di Maggio’s has taken over the former Pizza Chicago space on West San Fernando Street at San Pedro Street downtown.

Since patriarch Tony died in 2012, the operation — dubbed “Home of the Original Stromboli” — has been run by matriarch Anna and sons Jack and Tom, using the recipes Tony created when he worked in pizzerias back in New York and Pennsylvania. The family opened their restaurant in San Jose in 1977 and never looked back.

That signature dish, the stromboli, is “by far” the best-seller, Tom says. For the uninitiated, Di Maggio’s describes its stromboli as “Ham, Italian sausage, salami, mustard, American cheese, mozzarella cheese, all wrapped in pizza dough and topped with butter, oregano, black pepper and our homemade tomato sauce.”

Mustard? Yep, as Di Maggio’s customers know, that ingredient is what Tom calls “the secret weapon.”

The menu also includes pizza, Italian meatball and sub sandwiches, pasta and more.

Details: Hours at the new Tony Di Maggio’s will mirror those of the original: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. 150 W. San Fernando St.; www.tonydimaggiospizzarestaurant.com.
