Spoilers are included in this review.

Thor’s third stand-alone movie and one that I have long been looking forward to turned out to have more to offer than I expected. This film is being raved as the “funniest Marvel movie yet.” Granted it was a hilarious movie, but I loved it for the supervillain. From the previews of the film one could tell that there was going to be a female villain but the previews did not prepare me for the awesome power and cool backstory of Hela.

Hela (aka the Norse goddess of death), was Odin’s first born and was raised to be a weapon of mass destruction which helped Odin achieve power over the Nine Worlds. When she became too strong and basically threatened to take her father’s throne. Odin banished her until the day he died. He also neglected to tell his next son, Thor, and adopted son, Loki, about her and he changed his ways to peace treaties and agreements rather than wars.

Thor’s long lost sister manifested herself to her brothers at the time of their father’s death and thus, the prophecy of Ragnarok was in full motion. Asgard was predicted to burn and fall to Hela. Hela immediately shows her great strength when Thor throws Mjolnir (his hammer) and she catches it and crushed it with one hand. In the film, Hela very closely resembles the comic book version of her black and green attire. She would seem to activate her powers by stroking her hair back, which would then form black antler-like horns.

This is a refreshing twist on the Marvel films. Since they have given us a lot of powerful male villains in recent films: Loki, the Norse god of mischief, from the first Avengers, Ultron from Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ronan the Accuser from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, Ego the living planet from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, and so on. Finally, Thor: Ragnarok gives us a bad-ass villainess.
