I need to insert a formula that will allow me to total the rows below based on the number placed in another location. For instance I want to insert a subtotal group in a row and I want the total of the rows below that to be in my subtotal. But I will not know how many rows I will have until I enter the value in the specified cell.

Or I could use a formula or macro that totals the until it hits an empty row in the specified column.

Excel Facts

Can a formula spear through sheets?
Use =SUM(January:December!E7) to sum E7 on all of the sheets from January through December
=SUBTOTAL(x,INDIRECT("$A$1:$A$"&y) where x is the subtotal you want to use and y is the cell you will input the value to tell it how many rows to look down for its calculation.

Thank you for the attempt but it did not work. I am sure that I did not explain it correctly, it was trying to do something but just not what I was looking for.

To show a small screen shot, see my signature block below for alternatives & place to test.

Sorry about that, new to this, thought that I could drop a screen shot in and make my questions make some sense... :)

No problem, but I'd still recommend testing the methods I suggested (unless using a Mac) as potential helpers cannot copy from your images and they generally do not like typing out test data - much easier to copy/paste. :)

Thank you for looking, I don't really care what it is or how it functions, I am don't even think I really understand the difference. I am just trying to be able to create a template subtotal row and insert it with everything ready to go then just tell it how many rows it needs to subtotal. If that makes sense?
