A round-up of news and views relating to Chelsea ahead of their Europa League clash with Rubin Kazan tonight.
Rafa Benitez has claimed that Chelsea have improved under his stewardship , and highlighted the performances of key players as proof of this:
“Victor Moses, Cesar Azpilicueta, Ryan Bertrand and David Luiz, who was criticised at the beginning, have all improved.
"Juan Mata is scoring, Oscar is growing and even Fernando Torres was doing well at the beginning and getting goals, although he’s not scoring now.
Benitez has also said that he would like to move on to another top side next season, perhaps even in England . Benitez will leave Chelsea in the summer whatever the outcome of their remaining fixtures, with Jose Mourinho the current favourite to replace the Spaniard.
Ryan Bertrand has said that he is eager to impress over the next few games whilst Ashley Cole is side-lined with a hamstring injury. Cole will be out for two weeks, giving the 23 year old an opportunity to show that he is ready for a regular first team place. On HITC today, Lewis Doe asks if Chelsea might consider letting Bertrand go this summer if he does not impress in the next few weeks.
Chelsea and Manchester City have been dealt a blow in the pursuit of Brazilian sensation Neymar , with reports suggesting that Barcelona have met with the strikers father, and are clear favourites to sign the 21 year old. Neymar might wait until after the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 before he leaves Santos, with some rumours that Barcelona already have a £40million deal in place.
David Luiz will play his 50th European match tonight if he features against Rubin Kazan, and the Brazilian defender has stressed the importance of Chelsea keeping a clean sheet tonight at Stamford Bridge:
“We need to be careful, play an intelligent game and not concede any goals, because that's very important when you play the first leg at home.
Scott Parker has said that winning the Europa League with Tottenham would be a bigger achievement for him than winning the league with Chelsea in 2005 .Parker did not feature enough in that campaign to earn a winner’s medal, and has said he doesn’t even know where the replica medal Chelsea made for some squad players is.
