can’t believe we hit 14,000 readers with the first issue of Greyhound Express. A massive thank-you to each and every one of you, and to everybody who contributed. The feedback has been marvellous and dare I say it I feel we have got even better this issue. March is always the month greyhound racing springs into action, what a month it has been with the Ladbrokes Puppy Derby and a supporting cast of sensational quality. Racing Post Juvenile night with the added bonus of being back on Sky Sports, the Trainer’s Championship from Yarmouth and the BAGS EGGSTRAVAGANZA. Greyhound racing is flying high and with April’s amazing calendar of action it just gets better and better. We have packed in more trainer in-
terviews, more previews and reviews, I hope you enjoy April’s edition. Greyhound racing is definitely on the up, contrary to what many would have you believe. We are back on Sky Sports, RPGTV has extended its programme from three nights a week to a brilliant five, Coventry and Julie Collier have joined the team – both are massive pluses. 2013 is a fantastic time to be involved in this wonderful sport. One bit of news that had me chuckling was the law brought in to Northern Ireland; you will now be fined £80 if you’re caught walking more than four dogs. Let’s face it really it is common sense and should be welcomed. It made me laugh thinking back to when I first arrived in Ireland aged 16,
my first day at work I was sent out with 10 on a walk. We came across a rabbit and I swear my arms are still a few inches longer than before I set off, if only that rule would have been in place in then. Coventry came up trumps once again streaming live over on the net the solo trials of Ballymac Eske and Farloe Warhawk. It was great to see these superstars. Surely this can be rolled out at other tracks, people love to see them. You have to give Harry Findlay credit he is breaking new ground on a regular basis. Who will win the Golden Sprint?
This race will be ultra-competitive the very best short four-bend runners in the country will turn out in force. I caught up with racing manager Peter O’Dowd who is without question one of the best judges in our sport to get his thoughts; “There are quite a few likely candidates; Mark Wallis looks to have a very strong team with Ayamzaman who bounced back to form in emphatic style, Lil Risky who is always a threat and Glanmire Lad who is being brought on nicely and possibly trained to peak for this race. “You could make a case for any of Mark’s runners but we have some real quality local runners; Borna Monty trained by Jim Reynolds looks to be progressive, he is consistent and I have been impressed with his style of running. “Nans Turbo is another local who could go well, on his day he can give any a run for their money around Romford. Mottos Impact for Seamus Cahill is another greyhound that looks to be hitting form; any

track and distance were made for Glanmire Lad, others in the race will have one eye on other targets but this is the big one for him, Mark Wallis looks to have a mouthwatering team packed with talent and this greyhound spearheads the champions assault on the Golden Jacket. His kennel companion Ayamzaman is a real talent and should be in the shake-up that is for sure but another kennel mate Lil Risky 2012 British Bred Dog of the year is an appealing each-way proposition at 20/1. Mark heads to Romford holding most of the aces but there are talented challengers lining up that will give it everything to try and stop Imperial Kennels winning this race once again: Connections of Borna Monty were in deep thought about running here or heading north to Kinsley for the Gymcrack, I can confirm he will run here all being well, the more I see of this talented Jim Reynolds youngster the more I like him, he is brilliant over this 400m course but he may well be a Derby dog, he is certainly a very progressive dog and will surely take connection on a magnificent journey this year. Seamus Cahill’s Mottos Impact has lived
up to his name and made a serious impact on the British scene, he looks very much a greyhound to stay on the right side of, his kennel mate Dusseldorf in contrast has not set the world alight since his move to these shores but I get the feeling something big is just around the corner. It is set to be a fantastic competition and very competitive, Glanmire Lad and his kennel mate Lil Risky each-way for me, I can’t wait for the action to start. You will see the betting below, Your A Champ (connection said she won’t run) Bonnamassa Rocks (looks to be heading to Kinsley) so be careful if playing either of those until they are confirmed runners, I doubt they will be. WINDON has announced that Pin Point Recruitment is to sponsor this year’s Arc, which will maintain his Category One status courtesy of a first prize of £8,000. All three rounds will be broadcast live into betting shops in the UK and Ireland, with the final live on Sky Sports on Wednesday, May 1. The 36-dog competition over 480m will kick off with six heats on Friday, April 19, the first three qualifying for the semi-finals on Friday, April 26. The first two in each of the semis will make the decider, which will form the centrepiece of a two-hour Sky show as one of the fixtures chosen to help kick off the new deal with Bags/SIS. Bill Glass, Operations Director for Swindon’s owners Gaming International, said: “We are really pleased to have the Arc on Sky once again and are absolutely delighted that we can announce that Alan Findlay and his Pin Point Recruitment company will be backing the Arc. “Alan is a great supporter of greyhound racing, an owner with Kelly Macari, of course, and it is brilliant that he has chosen to support this event.” The Pin Point Recruitment Arc will clash with the 18-runner Ladbrokes. com Scottish Derby – heats April 27, final May 4 – but Glass did not see that as a particular problem. “Geographically it’s obviously not a concern, as we couldn’t get much farther apart and, with Shawfield opting for a field of 18 runners for the Derby, a number of high quality greyhounds will hopefully be heading our way as well.” “Also thanks to the move back to a later date, which I have been trying to secure since we first took on the competition from Walthamstow, they will travel and race in much better weather than the last few years. I am really looking forward to it,” he added.

Kevin Hutton has real strength and depth in his kennel and being attached to Swindon this is a massive race for him, nobody will be heading to Swindon with a team of dogs like Kevin. So there really was only one man to talk to “I think our best chance of winning the race is with Jolly Bullseye but we have a real strong team, Tibetan Skies, Droopys Danneel, Slippery Patch, Swords Messi, Taranis Rex to name just six and we will probably enter more than that. “It is fantastic that Pin Point Recruitment have stepped in to sponsor the race, it promises to be a great spectacle with the final live on Sky it just adds something extra. With this being our home track we would love to win it, we will certainly be giving it our best shot.” It promises to be a really high class affair, I know Mark Wallis will not be going to Scotland and he will target the Arc instead with his best four-bend runners. You have to respect the champion trainer, Bridge Ruth, Benkaat Blue and Castlebride Dan are all top-class and capable of winning the Arc. Bridge Ruth has an ultra-impressive CV and probably represents Mark’s best chance. For me Tibetan Skies another of Kevin Hutton’s runners looks a greyhound that will be so difficult to keep out of the frame and looks to have massive eachway claims but Jolly Bullseye who was so impressive on the Racing Post Juvenile Sky card will take some stopping and looks the one to be on.

one such greyhound, and if his brilliant victory in the Racing Post Juvenile is a sign of things to come then we are in for something very special. Is this the year that a greyhound grabs the mantle and does what none could do before – it just may well be, this is the first leg of the Derby treble, if he manages to win this well the greyhound world will go in uproar, the pressure and media focus will certainly go up a few notches. It would be a very brave man/woman to back against him winning it. Look at some of the dogs that stand in his way; his kennel mate Farloe Warhawk, don’t be fooled by his defeat if we turned the draw around he would have led and it may well have been a different story. Farloe Tango, Charlie Lister OBE has a sensational record here at Shawfield, Tango is a formidable greyhound. These look to be the two main dangers and the pendulum may well swing imagine if they won this great race, could they go on and do the treble.
It won’t be easy for Ballymac Eske but all being well he should win this race, even dogs of this calibre need some luck, draws, bumps, injuries the list is endless and that is why the Triple Crown is a feat just out of reach for most.
Lively Outsider
Aldworth Samson, what a greyhound Samson is for Jimmy Wright, there is no doubting this fella has huge ability and is the current king of Newcastle. It is somewhat of a fairy story purchased from Cork sale, 1,800 euro was bid but that did not make the reserve and was bought off the bench for a little more but what a bargain he has turned out to be. I caught up with Jimmy and asked him what the plans are with Samson? “He would have run in the big BAGS competition, having only won the single open he met the criteria, but a cut foot scuppered those plans so now focus switches to the Scottish Derby. “He needs to keep improving and it
won’t be easy taking on the best; there are some fantastic greyhounds out there, his runs around Newcastle on winter going make him a player in my opinion, hopefully he will keep improving and with a bit of sun on his back who knows what times he would do, we need that bit of luck and for him to keep safe.” I have seen Jimmy up close and I think he is fantastic trainer, the best man I have ever seen check a dog over. It will be exciting to see what 2013 holds for Aldworth Samson, it promises to be a fantastic journey. Jimmy believes he has the ammunition. It would not surprise me to see Aldworth Samson run well in a big competition, he would not be entering him if he did not believe he would go well, he is just not that sort of man. It would be an amazing story for both trainer and greyhound. He should be a cracking price and although it’s a huge step up, I’ve seen enough from him to believe he definitely has each-way claims.

Betfred Gymcrack the A Mick takes a look at the big event in West Yorkshire this month nother cracking puppy competition fires up and without question the £6,000 winner’s purse will attract the very best youngsters to Yorkshire for a showdown at Kinsley.
This race is steeped in history probably its most famous champion is Staplers Jo from when this great race was staged at Hackney. Greyhound fans are always scared of change, there were many disgruntled when it moved to Hall Green but the brilliant racing won them over. Droopys Hope took the race last year and went on to win the English Oaks and now greyhound fans are being won over at Kinsley. Now in its third year at the Yorkshire venue this could be the best Gymcrack since its move from Hall Green, most of the leading youngsters who took part at Monmore in the Ladbrokes Puppy Derby are eligible and it promises much. I caught up with racing manager Andrew Mascarenhas and asked him for the low-down on this great race: “It is difficult when you take over a race steeped in history, I think it’s fair to say it is getting better and better. “With the dogs booked in for trials and trainers coming from all over the country this promises to be a brilliant competition. There won’t be any dogs in making up the numbers. “It is so difficult to say who will win it but I think Strategic Review should go well. “It looks hard for local dogs but the best chance would be with Michael Rogers trained Bit View Bugatti. “Good luck to everyone taking part and thank-you for supporting this great event.” Key Dates: Heats 31st March Semi-finals 7th April Final 17th April – Live on Sky-Sports

Strategic set for big run
Chris Allsopp pulled off a brilliant onetwo in the Monmore classic. His winner Cluxtons Free is an April whelp so will miss out but the runner-up Strategic Review looks a real talent in the making. He has not raced away from Monmore yet but if he can carry his impressive form lines on the road he could be a real force. Bonnamassa Rocks performed admirably in the Puppy Derby, connections must have been looking up to the heavens when Golden Wonder was drawn on their outside, he is a smart performer and is well capable of taking an event of this nature. Farloe Klein looks an interesting runner for George Oswald. They won the race last year with Droopys Hope – he has some nice form in Ireland, does
lightning strike twice – connections will certainly be hoping so. Bit View Bugatti looks the best local hope so I caught up with her trainer Michael Rogers. He told me: “I feel honoured and very proud to have a greyhound that is good enough to compete in this great race. “I only have three greyhounds and they mean so much to me, definitely they are part of the family. I feed the traditional way and give them plenty of time and care. “She has been fantastic, Bugatti knows her way around Kinsley and it is very exciting knowing trainers from all over the UK are coming. “We will give it our best shot but most of all we will enjoy the occasion. She has a chance, she can do it both ways – to be honest I can’t wait for it to start. “I was involved in owning some good dogs in the 80s trained by Peter Beau-
mont but it’s amazing do it myself, I love it. “If I was to give the readers a greyhound to look out for it would be Bit View Beauty, a September 2011 bitch that is currently unraced. She looks exciting.” All the powerful kennels will be coming like Mark Wallis, Seamus Cahill, Paul Young, Dean Childs and even the maestro Charlie Lister OBE is looking to have runners. It is set to be hugely competitive but what a story it would be if Michael Rogers could pull it off and win the Gymcrack. This is what sport is all about – everyone knows what happened when Goliath met David, this is greyhound racing’s very own battle of the big against small. Let’s follow this with interest and most of all wish Michael Rogers good luck in his quest to land the Gymcrack.

love this race it is something a little different; the heats are over 480m on 23rd April, semi-finals over 500m 30th April and the final worth £7,000 to the winner over 660m on the 7th May. Sheffield really knows how to put on a show and look after the connections.
Ballyard To Be Punters’ Buddy
Now with Barrie Draper, Ballyard Buddy ticks all the right boxes and is a greyhound of the highest calibre over six-bend trips. The tricky part of the competition will be qualifying over the shorter trips, if he lines up in the final he should take the world of beating. Another of Barrie’s likely runners is Farloe Kyle, very unlucky to get touched off by the narrowest of margins in The Queen Mother Cup, the six bends test his staying power to the maximum but he looks a likely qualifier over the shorter trips. Elaine Parker faces a race against time with Welton Arthur after picking up an injury in the the Queen Mother Cup, if team Parker can win that race he will be formidable opposition and should go very well. Speaking of the Queen Mother Cup the winner Stepaside Glenis will be aimed at this race. It is an incredible story and massive credit to Jamie Smith who bred, reared and trains this talented bitch who took the cup in her 143rd race. I know Jamie is worried about the 480m but if she can qualify connections are confident she will put up a good display. If you want a greyhound from left-field look no further than Gunner Jessie, at the time of writing she has only had two races; a runaway success at Galway (29.07), her 2nd run was over 750 yards at Shelbourne where she made all the running to win in (42.35 +60) and that is an impressive start to her career. Jessie is over in the UK with Danny Gomersall and being aimed at this. It promises to be one of the highlights of the year. The speed merchants have the upper hand in the heats which makes some of the strong stayers vulnerable but as the competition progresses that balance swings into their favour. The 480m heats will have some connections very nervous, Ballyard Buddy though is the greyhound they all have to beat, if he can muster up a qualifying spot in that opening round I don’t think you will stop him taking the steps to the podium and lifting this fantastic competition.

ever before has one greyhound captured my heart and imagination like this flying brindle did, for me he was simply the best. I would travel the length and breadth of the country just to catch a glimpse of the great Jimmy Lollie and see him once more destroy a top class field with ease and professionalism this sport very rarely gets to witness. This is the story of Jimmy Lollie. Pat Kiely from Cork was the man given the task of schooling this brilliant litter with the very clear message we want to know the best two as the others would be put up for sale. This litter was burning up the schooling tracks and in Ted’s words this is what happened: “To this day I will never know how we never ended up keeping Jimmy Lollie, Pat Kiely said the best two in this litter were

La Lu La and Jimmy The Singer. Pat Buckley said are you sure Ted I like the big dog (Jimmy Lollie) but we trusted the schooler and don’t get me wrong they were good dogs but they were not Jimmy Lollie. “I saw the printouts from the track and on paper they were the fastest, it is just one of those things so we sold the rest. La Lu La got injured and Jimmy The Singer was open class but not competition class.”
Seamus Cahill Buys A Champion
Seamus purchases Jimmy Lollie for a figure around £4,000, he sells him to a couple of lads that shall remain nameless for the exact same figure and Jimmy starts his racing career off with Seamus and Teresa Cahill. Jimmy was shaping up with
promise but this story was about to take another twist. “I sold Jimmy to these lads but they were not happy, as Jimmy appeared to struggle to stay and they did not fancy a sprinter, I gave them their money back and sold him to his present owners (Mr Gamblin and Mr Reed) for the same sum of money, I think he won his very first race for them – a £500 sprint open.” The greatest sprinter in British history had not only managed to slip through Ted Soppitt’s fingers but also his first owners, his new owners showed faith and were richly rewarded.
Sprinting Was His Game
Jimmy was an out and out sprinter, he
ran with credit over the 400m but even that stretched his staying power beyond its limits. Over two bends Jimmy was starting to build a reputation and more importantly was winning races. I think he first came on my radar when he completed a four-timer in August 2009, the third leg of that feat was a brilliant track record breaking run around Hove clocking 16.02. It was not long after that he ran away with a sprint competition at Yarmouth, he seemed to take off the back end of 2009 and was almost unbeatable and I fell in love with him forever.
National Sprint 2009
In his preparations for the National Sprint competition at Nottingham he
TOP DOGS turned up a month early and won The Betfred Bonus Sprint competition. He was sensational – he beat them all in this competition including the very talented Rotar Wing and this would set the scene for one of the best battles in racing that would pan out time after time. His preparation was ideal and he literally destroyed the best sprinters in the land by 4.25L in the final to be crowned National Sprint champion. I’d found my hero, I had never seen his like before in my lifetime. I was there that night to cheer him on, nothing could have stopped me from seeing him, let me tell you I would have walked there to see him if there was no other option.
2010 Jimmy Can’t Stop Winning
After a couple of defeats Jimmy was back to his very best and went on a fantastic run through January to March winning an amazing eight races. Jimmy was attracting the crowds and sending members of the press into frenzy, we were running out of things to say about this great dog. By the time we hit summertime it was unbelievable Jimmy found an extra gear and while the sun shined Jimmy stamped his authority on a sport not seen in the sprinting ranks since the great Ravage Again.
A Summer Never To Be Forgotten
A run that would see Jimmy win 14 races through May to August including two competition wins at Wimbledon and Sunderland, smash three track records; twice at Wimbledon and an incredible run at Hove that saw him lower his own clock to 15.94. He was winning all over the country; nothing fazed this great champion he just kept make it to Belle Vue for him to run in the fiwinning. nal. He flew out, made the bend in front and went onto win by 3.75L and to this day that victory was the greatest I have ever seen in the sprinting division.

Was it all over, was this the last we would see of this amazing dog; many thought it was but Jimmy had other ideas. He came back on the track in March after six months off and after a brilliant 2nd in the Trainers Championship at Perry Barr behind Drumcove Lad. Jimmy would go on a great run. He won five from six through March to April. We hit June and Jimmy would finish 6th and that would be the last time we would see the flying brindle race.

That brilliant year of 2010 with the exploits of Jimmy and his kennel mates would see this brilliant trainer win the Trainers Championship. Jimmy was the star but what a job Seamus and Theresa did to keep a dog performing at this level for so long; let me tell you without question you have to be at the very top of your profession to pull off a feat like team Cahill did with Jimmy. That master stroke when everyone thinks you have gone mad by running a dog at a different track in between a semi-final and final of the biggest competition in that dog’s category. Not only does Jimmy Lollie deserve his place in history but so does the man holding the lead; Seamus Cahill for me is one of the best trainers in the world. Let’s not forget if first freezing conditions and then snow had not prevented Jimmy from running in the final of the Scurry surely he would not have only equalled the record he would have broken it. Thank-you Jimmy Lollie and Seamus/ Theresa Cahill for the memories of this wonderful dog, I bet we never see his like again in the sprinting ranks. They made statues for the great stayer Ballyregan Bob perhaps our sport should do something fitting for this great champion, he richly deserves it! round 200 greyhounds will do battle over six rounds at Wimbledon in a bid to win the greatest race on the planet worth a staggering £150,000 to the winner. Bookmakers in general come in for stick, everyone is looking for someone to blame but our bookmakers do a fantastic job in greyhound racing, they step up with sponsorship packages, offer prize-money at their tracks and generally put on a show that give greyhound racing fans the ultimate thrill. The countdown is on to the 1st round of the greyhound derby, I can’t wait. The Americans get excited about their Superbowl, the William Hill English Derby does that to me, nothing else comes close and there is just something magical about it. It is more than a race, it is part of greyhound folklore and every year new and exciting memories are created. Soon as Christmas is over I start thinking about this great race, dogs start to come back off their winter break and I start looking at the ante-post market. I am gripped with Derby fever already. With this in mind I caught up with Jennie Prest the lady who is bucking the trend and ploughing money into greyhound racing. 2013 is set to be a massive year for the powerful Farloe Tango, (Hondo Black – Farloe Oyster, September 2010) bred by Dessie Loughery. Currently in my opinion one of the most underrated greyhounds on the circuit and this is set to be a massive year. At the time of writing he has had just 15 races resulting in 10 victories, he has mixed it with the best and is a competition greyhound if there ever was one the only time he was out of the first three positions was because he was knocked over. Greyhounds are far more intelligent than some give them credit for, his temperament has been questioned because he stopped chasing twice in sprint trials, is it just a coincidence that both those times were at the same venue where he suffered that terrible fall? I don’t think it
is and furthermore I think Farloe Tango is a greyhound you can trust and depend on, he is definitely one you want on your side in the betting ring. I caught up with Charlie Lister OBE “He is a lovely dog, right up there with the very best, we will probably go to Scotland with him but you would have to be thinking about the English Derby for him. His style of running makes it difficult to keep him out of the qualifying spots, after the derby we will probably look at trying him over six-bends with a tilt at the St Leger in mind.” We are well into March now and Charlie Lister OBE has decided not to race him yet but he has been sparkling in trials and you get the feeling Charlie is saving his star for when it really matters ‘the big ones’. Chris Allsopp’s other runner grabbed second and it’s a day that will live long in the memory of everyone connected with the kennel. This race throws up champions year after year and this one will be no different, trust me there is a superstar mixed in among these runners if not more than one. We’re back with a real bang on Sky Sports

ast your mind back to the end of 2012, it was a dark day for the sport – the news came out that coverage would end on Sky Sports after a long and very successful association with the brilliant channel. Tom Kelly and his associates though put together a rescue plan which brought together a package that would save the day; the programmes would be saved through BAGS/SIS. There was never any doubt it would have to be produced on a much smaller budget, staff would take cuts but most important of all the show would go on. It would be fair to say that it would be grossly unfair to judge this new look programmeme by what went before (people maybe realise just how lucky we were to have the programme expertly run and put together by Dave Lawrence and the budget the programme was given). Everyone must get behind the programme and seriously give thanks to all of those involved; we have the platform once more for the stars of the game to shine brightly. Let’s congratulate the team, I thought my GTA colleague and Chairmen Jonathon Hobbs, Tony Ennis, Errol Blyth, Darrell Williams and everyone connected did a fantastic job for the first programme and trust me will only get better. There was more good news; we now have Jackpots and Placepots that everyone nationwide can get involved in, this is potentially magnificent news, we could soon see people chasing HUGE pots and I predict these will be very popular. There was one name left out above on purpose that of Gary Wiltshire; how good was it to see him back on our screens and looking so well. He first became famous
for losing over a million pounds on the day Frankie Dettori completed the magnificent seven. To me though Gary is a rock within the industry, his door is always open for advice and support. Gary does a fair bit for charity also; I remember him and his colleague John ‘Curly’ Wilson giving me a £200 charity bet, I stuck it on Knockies Hannah who won at 25/1 and we have shared many a joke on that subject since, interestingly Gary has not given me another one.

The Racing Post Juvenile witnessed six top-class trackers go head to head in the £5,000 one off feature event. I have to say I think it was one of the best ever fields so what happened made it all the more re-
markable – Ballymac Eske simply blew them away to score by 7.25L and reaction was swift from William Hill the derby sponsors to install him the 7/1 favourite. There was much talk within the industry about Ballymac Eske and Wimbledon,was this his track, would we see him at his best over the derby course and distance? One thing that was never in any question was his ability and now having put in a brilliant performance like this at Wimbledon he has won over and influenced even more fans. He ran admirably in the puppy derby but narrowly lost out to his high class kennel companion Farloe Warhawk on that occasion, there was no mistake here, trapping out superbly he was challenged on the runup by Warhawk but he made the bend in front and was race over from that point. Barrie Draper his trainer summed it up brilliantly “When he leads, he wins.”

Ballymac Eske showed fantastic pace and power to pull right away from his rivals to delight his connections and supporters, sent off the 5/4f he was simply perfect on the night and in no way does the 7.25L winning margin in 28.41 –10 flatter him in any shape or form. Don’t write off the other runners, they will be back and all look to have a fantastic 2013 ahead of them but all the talk and excitement for now rightly is with Ballymac Eske, talk of triple crowns, domination are not out of place but Barrie Draper and his team will not be getting carried away, they will enjoy this race and victory but know he has many more battles and tests waiting for their champion in the coming months.

Rockview Royal 5/2 ran well for 2nd and the highly regarded Lenson Johnny 3/1 got no luck in running and had to settle for 6th on this occasion but both look to have promising futures on the hurdle scene. All the talk was about Westmead Meteor and just looks to be getting better and better, I am sure connections will have one eye on all the major competitions for the year. It is remarkable that he only began his hurdle career after a mix-up in the paddocks but what a blessing that mistake looks to have been. I am a massive fan of this novice hurdle competition, it is exciting and to be completely honest you never know what is going happen. Look at round one – I can’t for the life of me remember only one greyhound ever finishing a race before, the purists will have a moan, well let them I say, The Springbok is one of the most exciting races in the greyhound calendar, members of the public absolutely love these races and we should see more hurdle races across the board.

It was a fantastic night of racing, the two feature events were breath-taking but the standard on show throughout the night was of the highest level. The new look Sky programme kicked off proceedings with a 16/1 shock winner, Sundance Jet took the first sprint contest by 1.5L in 16.79. Comeragh King was desperately unlucky and is definitely one for the note-books pitched at this level. Bridge Ruth for champion trainer Mark An emotional Ricky Holloway dedicates Wallis was in superb form winning by 2.5L this brilliant victory to his mother who sad- in 28.89, this was a high-class bitches race,

The marathon was up next and this was a cracking race, Aero Rebel was slammed at the start and never had a chance from that point on, Black Lamora looked dangerous throughout but had to settle for 2nd, strong staying Ballymac Swift pulled off a 10/1 shock for John Mullins to win by 0.75L in 56.54. Lil Risky 7/4f and Ballymac Jones 7/2 had a fantastic race in the sprint with the latter coming out on top for Pat Rosney by 1.25L in 16.47, Lil Risky was forced to check at the corner and this undoubtedly cost him precious time otherwise it would have been a lot closer, both of these twobend stars look set to have brilliant years. Kevin Hutton is having the year of his life, this great run continued in impressive fashion when Jolly Bullseye 7/2 came out on top by 4.25L over last year’s William Classic and Henlow Derby winner Loughteen Blanco 11/10f in 28.65. Next stop the Arc for Kevin’s star and who knows he could even be a Derby contender, don’t rule out Loughteen Blanco there looks plenty more to come from Seamus Cahiill’s star. The next race left me scratching my head, Blonde Reagan 2012 Stayer and Marathon performer of the year after winning the St Leger (over course and distance) and TV Trophy, he led this field from the first bend to the third bend but dropped out tamely, this saw the 11/10f come in 5th position, don’t write this champion off he will be back. I have a question mark over win and place but both these pots are great for the game. We all need to stick together get behind new initiatives, we all love the game and new things like this are important but must be supported. ” I don’t like to look at negatives but one thing I miss is the bookmakers on track, I love being in the betting ring punting, pushing buttons on a computer does not give me the same buzz, it’s a thrill having the banter, sadly there are only three at the Don, why is that? “It is a real shame, the days of the track bookmaker are numbered Mick, John White, John Henwood and George Reed stand at Wimbledon (they were not busy) they are joined at the Derby by Hills, I re-
member there being between 50 and 100 bookmakers all around the track at Harringay when I first got involved.” What can be done? “I honestly don’t know, midweek attendances are shot, if you’re a bookie midweek you should take knitting needles and knit a jumper because you won’t be busy. There is more profit in terms of percentages in greyhound racing compared to horse racing for bookies, most horse races are around 110% compared to 125% for a greyhound race on average but you have to get people betting, Saturday nights are the bread and butter for all track bookmakers and promoters.” Is there anything you would like to see implemented that would benefit the sport? “There are lots of positives but what is needed is everyone to get behind them, we all need to stick together and push on. This Sky programme gives everyone an opportunity to do that but lots of positives going on
in the game. Things like your new magazine are brilliant, seriously run it in print Mick get it in the shops, you love the game and that shines through people will buy into the sport.” Thanks Gal, we will certainly think about that but these things take time, it is definitely on the agenda. You lost over a million pounds on that fateful Dettori day, you have turned a real negative into a positive, I admire that about you, was this a good thing that happened to you? “(Gary chuckles) You’re quite good at this interviewing game Michael, I did not think so at the time, I loved my house but lost it, that is biggest regret but you are right I was somewhat an unknown bookmaker but doing over a million catapulted me into the public eye and created a lot of opportunities. I have always been a trier ever since I was a kid, selling Christmas paper on Oxford Street to what I do today; you have to give everything your best shot and make things happen but in a crazy way, yes losing over a million was one of the best things to happen to me.” What does the future hold for you? “I still have my paper round I do seven days a week, but I am semi-retired now, I have a long standing relationship with Roger Cearns at Sittingbourne, I am proud to be associated with the track. I first went there when they lost their BAGS contract and now they have three meetings a week so things going well. Sky programme I love that, Betfred TV I do it on a Saturday morning in Manchester, I am always giving the dogs a boost. Lots of new things; I am official bookmaker at snooker, fishing and a new one the shooting.” Shooting Gal, I was thinking of taking up shooting – can you get a bet on? “You can’t, I still remember that 25/1 shot you got me and John with, but joking aside yes I stand at the Clay Pigeon Shooting championships, you should pop down it’s a good day out.” I may do that, thanks Gary it’s been a pleasure and I wish you the very best of luck with the new Sky Programme and all your other projects. “You’re welcome son, anytime it’s a pleasure and make sure you get this magazine into the shops soon, it will be a winner and everyone fight for your lives, every pound counts.”

he six top trainers from 2012 had a showdown at the seaside live on Sky Sports over eight races, it delivered a fantastic nights racing and an epic battle between Paul Young and Charlie Lister OBE that went all the way to the wire, with Charlie coming out on top to the delight of his supporters who had lumped on at 11/8. This is one of greatest nights in the sport and this year’s championship was one of the most exciting we have witnessed. Charlie Lister OBE came in for huge support has people jumped all over the opening price off 11/8 offered by the sponsors Ladbrokes, he was smashed off the boards to go off 2/5 by the start of the first.

Those backers got the fright of their lives after race-one when puppy Golden Wonder 4/7f was on the receiving end of a bumpy ride and had to settle for 4th position. Paul Young got off to the perfect start with the unexposed Underground Paul 11/2 building on the huge promise he had shown in trials by taking his first career victory in style by 2L in 28.00.

Charlie Lister OBE would strike back in race three with Silverview Pinky 5/2 who took maximum points with a 1.25L victory over the super talented Bridge Ruth 11/8f in 28.14. This was just what the punters needed but Paul Young’s Jaytee Jules ran with credit to take 3rd position and still leave the man from Burton Lodge kennels with a healthy looking nine-point lead over his closest rival Chris Allsopp with Charlie a further point back in third.

Paul Young would build on this great start when Jaytee Hellcat 2/1f put in a quality performance to ride a bump and still win by 2L in 28.13. Charlie’s runner Heather George would trail in some way behind in 5th. To say there was some worried faces out there would be an understatement when Ladbrokes made him 13/8 after this race (the biggest price he ever showed) with Paul Young now an 10/11 shot.
If Lister OBE fans were looking happier after the third-race they were practically jubilant after the fourth, Fear Emoski making her six-bend competitive debut threw down a marker for all future sixbend races with a brilliant performance, she beat Blonde Reagan last year’s St Leger/TV Trophy double hero by 3L in 40.90. You just could not help but be impressed and Fear Emoski has only just turned two, the future looks very bright indeed but in terms of this contest it was just what Charlie needed, the gap was now down to just five points at the half-way stage and was very much all to play for.

This for me was the performance of the night, Farloe Tango 4/9f is a class act over four bends, making his debut over six-bends he was exceptional, he looked at home and I don’t think there is his equal over six-bends, he won this race by a comfortable 5L in 41.25. This sent Charlie Lister OBE supporters into raptures, he hit the front and surely one of the greatest gambles in this competition’s history would be landed.
Barracuda Strikes To Equal The Clock
Barrie Draper is a man you have to admire and respect, he came to Yarmouth knowing he stood very little chance of outright glory due to several of his stars being missing, the measure of the man is so high he left his mark on this competition when he sent out farloe Barracuda to a sensational victory in the sprint contest, beating a very solid bench mark in Lil Risky to the punch, he was eyecatching and crossed the line 1.5L to the good in a brilliant 16.19 which equals the track-record. Charlie’s Dreams Of Glory was in 4th and Paul Young’s Aero Joseph was in 5th meaning Paul’s lead was cut to just four-points.
Youngy Fights Back With Bluehawk
Paul Young never read the script and he would ensure this went all the way to the wire, you have to admire Paul’s battling spirit he just would not go away, Teejays Bluehawk 11/2 took advantage of first-bend trouble by running away with this race, it was all over in terms of a contest once he hit the front and he was a run-away winner by 6.75L in a great 27.87. Alien Planet 6/4f came 2nd which turned out to be crucial. This would set up the last leg decided in great fashion with just a single point separating these two great trainers.
Pluto Is Out And Gone
What a night and what a competition, it was a thrilling contest and all boiled down to this one race, would it be Charlie Lister OBE or Paul Young to walk off with the £10,000 first prize and the great prestige of coming out on top. Paul Young’s Bubbly Lucky 11/4 had to finish ahead of Lemon Pluto 5/4f but although Bubbly Lucky tried he just could not pull back Lemon Pluto once he had lead and would go down gallantly by 2.5L in 28.11.
The best ever championship
Well for me that was the best trainer’s championship I can remember, Charlie Lister OBE came out on top of an epic battle at Yarmouth but Paul Young surely gained a lot of admiration and supporters with the way he conducted himself and the effort he put into the night. It was supposed to be easy but experience tells you these nights never are and Charlie was made to work right up to the last to lift his 6th title. All of the six-trainers involved will be battling hard to try and finish in the top six this year so they can come back and have a crack at winning this in 2014.

Sheffield win an Eggstra special thriller
W
hat a master stroke by the powers that be at BAGS/ SIS, this competition not only lived up to expectations but exceeded them, it was given the name EGGSTRAVAGANZA and it was exactly that. Owners and trainers from all over the country were involved, running for quality prize-money, delivering fantastic racing and real excitement. The heats kicked off this great competition and had me gripped from the start, there was even a dead-heat at Monmore which needed a run off to qualify for the final, Paul Sallis trained Klockwork Kindra was the eventual winner, that must have given connections a real buzz. The feedback from across the country is a bit like an impression from Oliver Twist ‘Please sir Can We Have Some More’ one thing about BAGS/SIS they most certainly know how to put together a competition and run it, they deserve much praise. With a whopping 16 race card, every race was worth a total of £2,000 (1st =£1,000, 2nd £500, 3rd £200, 4th, 5th and 6th £100) but in total greyhounds chased a MASSIVE £125,000 and that is on the back of the very successful BAGS Track Championships On the track they day belonged to Sheffield, John Gilburn will have been loving this, he is a great supporter of not just Sheffield but the sport in general and is a true greyhound fan, his young gun from the racing office Sam Tweed delivers this magnificent trophy and a bonus cheque to be used for prize-money at Owlerton Stadium of £10,000.

Sheffield got off to a flying start when Lisa Stephenson trained Vanjohn took the puppy event close home, he looks a really nice progressive dog and sure to pay his way on the open scene. Jason Heath sent out Dacent Barry to victory in one of the staying events to keep the points coming in. Hather Sherlock did the business for Elaine Parker who beat Nottingham track-record holder Fabulous
Shanty in the other staying event. Barrie Draper rounded off a brilliant team-performance from the Yorkshire track when his Ballymac Arkle blew away a decent field by 7L to record a sensational time of 28.08 Hove performed well on the day and sealed 2nd place and £6,000, while it was a three way dead-heat for 3rd place between Belle Vue, Sittingbourne and Swindon. on the day footballers Steve Morrison and Grant Holt’s syndicate got a welcomed boost when their Muskerry Messi won, I hope the guys do well they have some exciting plans and would be nice to see them have success, Jim Daly is one of the nicest people in the sport and a quality trainer they are in capable hands. Kevin Hutton is having a year to remember and he did the business for his track Swindon pulling off a double with the impressive duo Alarming Jacks and Gemstone Annie both winning their respective bitches finals in good style. Our own Gentleman Jim Reynolds (Express Columnist) was in the winner’s enclosure with Tunnel Tiger, he just keeps getting better and better worth following this dog, he burst out the traps and just held on but showed electric pace to half-way he won by 0.75L in 28.61. FA Cup style competition be the next big thing to be brought out by BAGS. 16 tracks in a hat, being drawn out live in betting shops nationwide, first track out is a home tie, shooting it out over six races with three dogs each in a race to see if they can progress to the next round. It would be a sensational event, look at the excitement when one of the minnows takes on a giant at their home ground in football, just look at what happened to Bradford in the capital one cup and Millwall in the FA Cup. The BAGS/SIS cup would be huge in my
opinion and it would create excitement and a real buzz. BAGS looks to have a massive bearing on our sports future and to be honest they have been simply fantastic. Who knows in years to come we may even have a track league; Premier Division and Championship each consisting of eight teams. At the moment things like this are just a dream but you never know, it may well catch on in a big way, I’d definitely say things like this are worth looking at, and it would shake up our sport by offer something new and exciting.

was always taught not to back horses each-way but I am going to break that rule where it comes to IMPERIAL COMMANDER in the Grand National (Sat, 4.15, Ch 4).
The National used to be a race for honest stayers with horses lumping more than 11 stone having little chance of winning. But all that has changed now with the race worth so much money and the fences having been made much safer than in the race’s heyday. We saw a classy winning in Neptune Collonges 12 months ago carrying 11-6 and he was the fourth winner on the bounce to be carrying at least 11 stone – a feat that used to be a rarity. When it comes to class, Imperial Commander beats last year’s winner hands down.
By THE EDITOR He won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2010 and has barely run since. He came back off a 680-day break to run an excellent second in the Argento Chase at Cheltenham in January. He was an each-way fancy again for the Gold Cup after that only to miss the race with a setback. That’s not a problem as he goes well fresh – as that Argento run shows – and he has ticks in all the other Grand National boxes. He comes from Nigel Twiston-Davies who has won the race twice and knows exactly the type of horse needed to win the big race. He has won a Grade 1 race over at least three miles (of course) and has never fallen in a chase – with only an unseated rider to his name.
It’s true that six of his eight wins have come at Cheltenham but he won the Grade 1 Lancashire Chase at Haydock in 2010 (his last win in fact) so that shows that a flatter track holds no fears. He got the better of Tidal Bay that day and, although that horse has since improved, he is likely to have been National favourite had he not been injured. So the age of 13 is a worry as is the weight and long lay-off. But on the plus side, he is by far the classiest horse in the race, he goes well fresh, jumps well, stays and comes from an ideal yard. At the time of writing, most bookies are going 16-1 including a couple paying five places. It’s hard to see him being out of the first five if he jumps round – and he should jump round. On His Own has been well backed and he was going well when falling at Bech-
ers last year off the same mark. He won over hurdles last time and has the profile of most recent Irish winners of the race – but at 7-1 is short enough. Seabass ran a cracker when third last year but will have to contend with extra weight this time. That said, we know he likes the trip and track so he’s another for the top five. Trainer Ted Walsh has a good record in the race. The handicapper has given Ballabriggs a chance by dropping him 8lb from last year’s sixth. The 12-yearold is one to watch with some bookies paying six places. There’s some 25s around at press time which looks generous given his past efforts. If you like a real outsider, Big Fella Thanks is available at 40-1. He looked as good as ever when second in the Greatwood Chase at Newbury earlier this

or years here in the UK we have been starved of stake races for all grades of greyhounds but not anymore. I think the GBGB deserve massive credit for getting these off the ground, competition is what sport is all about and now thank goodness all owners have a chance of being involved in them. Competitions normally involve 18 greyhounds with a heat and final worth £500 to the winner, £100 for each finalist (total £1,100 prize-money for finals) we really should be celebrating these; here are this month’s winners, congratulations from everyone at Greyhound Express. This series gives owners the feel good factor
I caught up with Mr and Mrs Bell owners of Russanda Phil the recent winner of a Belle Vue Owners Bonus Series race, their story should be music to the ears of all greyhound fans. Because of the success of Russanda Phil their very first greyhound, they now own three. “These races are fantastic, so exciting, a big thank-you to the GBGB we have not been in the sport for long but love it. We purchased Russanda Phil from Elaine Parker and we have never looked back, Helen Adamson has been great and we just love it. To win a race like this, receive a presentation jacket and trophy is brilliant and means so much.” I was at Belle Vue to see this race it was a great final and you can see just what these races mean to owners, races like these just make owning greyhounds a much more attractive proposition. Mr and Mrs Bell are new to the sport and have won £500 but equally it’s the feeling you get from winning a competition. At that moment when your dog crosses the line it could be an open-competition it would not make any difference to the exhilaration felt by those involved it’s far more than winning a single race. We need all owners all over the UK to be feeling exhilarated, excited, valued, and full of pride; thanks to these races that is happening to owners in large numbers every month.
Belle Vue Cyclone hits Belle Vue
An A8 contest were Pingthelidsdavey was sent off the 7/4f, everything seemed to be going to plan for the favourite, with a swift exist he made the running but was to be gunned down close home when Pirbright Blue and the eventual winner Pinsley Cyclone swept passed him just at the line. This was an exciting finish and in truth all three raced over the line together and it could have gone either way but it was Jill Llewellin’s Pinsley Cyclone at 6/1 who came out on top in the photo by a head, and a neck in 29.18 -30.
Phil does Sizzler on the line
This race was an absolute cracker, I followed it closely in The Sport, heading into the final it looked a two-dog race between
the heat winners Home Sizzler and Russanda Phil, it turned out to be exactly that, Home Sizzler 3/1 for Andy Heyes blazed a trail and looked all over the winner but Russanda Phil 5/2jf for Helen Adamson had other ideas, he hit top speed in the second part of the race and managed to get up close home in this A2 cracker, there was only a neck between them in 29.56 -100. It was a thriller and both of these dogs seem to have more to come, Home Sizzler is a bitch to keep an eye on especially if she can get better going, I think she will end up capable of taking a maiden open somewhere.
Brighton and Hove Blue’s early wins the day
Woodmancote Blue ran out a comfortable winner for Wayne Wrighting in this A10 stake final. It was a competitive affair Dacent Pirlo was sent off the 2/1f but was baulked at the corner, Woodmancote Blue 5/2 showed superior early-pace to make the bend in front, while some of the other principles were having a bumpy ride he set sail for home, the winning distance was 2L but in reality it was a comfortable victory and Wrighting’s runner never looked in any danger, he stopped the clock in 30.86 -10.
Crayford Vieri does it for the boys
A S4 contest with a difference it was a Guys and Dolls event consisting of two heats, one for the dogs and one for the bitches, I like this format it’s something a little different and massive credit once more to the Crayford management. Venture Free won the bitches heat but all the talk was about Dower Vieri who ran away with the dog’s heat by 7.5L. Vieri was made the 1/1f, lids opened and the favourite missed the kick but showed huge pace to force his way to the front, he did not run away with this final both Springwood Erica and Venture Free ensured he was made to work for his victory but in the end he was classy and won by 2.75L in 34.52.
Bornthisway does it in style
The bookmakers were cheering and in party mode when they managed to get Stylish Dusty 1/1f beat in this exciting A8 final. Anyone who punted Dusty must have been making there way to the pay-out queue, he trapped well, made the bend and was looking all over the winner, Patsy Cusack’s Bornthisway 5/2 in stark contrast missed her break, and she looked like she had plenty to do, this strong running daughter of Timor Blue did exactly that, her engine roared and she showed fantastic pace down the back for this grade, she hit the front but Stylish Dusty would not go down without a fight, he tried in vain to battle back but he just could not manage it and went down gallantly by 0.75L in 24.36 -10. Open-racing is exciting but so is gradedracing anyone who doubts this should watch this race it was a cracker.
Doncaster Boy puts in a beautiful performance
A quality A2 final saw John Thompson’s Bellissimo Boy do the business in fine style, sent off the 2/1 favourite his supporters were never in doubt, he trapped out best clocking 4.14 and made every yard of the running, he still had 1.25L over his rivals
ALL THE RESULTS at the line and stopped the clock at a very decent 29.97. Blue Tunoco may have trialled in 6th in the final but he is probably one for the note-books and looks set to have a decent career.
Crystal holds off eagle in a cracker
A nice competitive A4 final at Doncaster saw Pop The Crystal sent off the 9/4f for Robert Hardy, the punters called it right, breaking well on the inside he made the bend, it looked like it was going to be a comfortable victory but Danny Gomersall trained Broomhill Eagle 3/1 came out of the pack, it turned out to be a cracking finish but Crystal had the first run, by the time they raced over the line it was an ever decreasing 0.75L in 31.09 -70. The front two look capable of winning in a higher grade and should be watched in the coming weeks.
Hall Green Big Ben chimes in final
Whisky Moss was sent off a very warm favourite for this A4 final, it was surprising to be honest he was beat in the heats by Topper Queen but the Hall Green faithful backed him into 5/4. Holycross Ben won his heat in good style and repeated that feat here in the final, sent off a 4/1 chance he was quickly looking like an odds on shot, trapping out well he was on the inside of the favourite and he made sure he got the bend, from that point the writing was on the wall, Baker’s charge never looked in danger and took the final by 1.25L in 29.59 -40.
Ardera outstays rivals to land final
Dower Gypsy was sent off the 9/4f after an impressive win in the heats but a slow start and 1st bend bumping put pay to any chance, it was another heat-winner Ardera Scabbers who caught the eye with a strong finishing kick last week, she repeated that effort at very generous odds of 5/1, there are not many greyhounds if any at this level that possess a finishing kick like Ardera Scabbers, she grabbed Gallowstown Gold 7/2 at the 3rd bend and powered on to a 2.25L victory in 30.81 -100. There is no doubt the going played into the paws of the strong running greyhounds but this was impressive, more impressive than the grade of A6 she can definitely step up and win at least a grade or two higher.
Harlow Max explodes at Harlow
It may have been A5 on the ticket but Mad Max for Thomas Aitken showed early-pace rarely seen at this level to take the final by storm. Creamery Blue was sent off the 1/1 favourite but this race was all about Mad Max, although he had showed good early-pace before he saved his best for this final, he absolutely rocketed out recording a fantastic 4.83 sectional, he quickly put his rivals to the sword and made a mockery of his 4/1 odds, this was an eye-catching performance winning by 4.75L in 27.05 -80.
Mini delights Lawrence
Mini Delight and Julies Jester served up a cracking race in the heats of this A6 final; there was just a neck to separate them with Jester coming out on top on that occasion. Those two greyhounds dominated the final but this time Mini Delight 4/1 came out on top and had the luxury of 1L over her rival Julies Jester 3/1 in 27.06 -30. I could not write about this final without mentioning Falkners Meg and Brykat Lola August and November
2007 whelps, what great servants they have been to connections and the sport.
Henlow Merlot the toast of Henlow
Dooey Strike broke the heart of her rivals by getting up close home in the heats and was duly sent off the 6/4f for this A7 final, Kim Taylor’s Time Merlot actually went faster in the heats but was available at a generous 9/4, Killala Slippy 7/2 was the pace setter with an exceptional break but succumbed to the fast finishers late on, Time Merlot looked dangerous from half-way, she eventually took it up at the 4th bend and to say she ran away from the opposition would be an understatement by the time Kim’s runner crossed the line she had put 4L between herself and Dooey Strike to stop the clock in 28.80 -40. The winner was very impressive and would be interesting if she was stepped up in distance. Killala Slippy is a greyhound worth noting; with those fantastic early gears he should win his fair share.
Kinsley Caploey aces the final at 10/1
Caploey Ace was soundly beaten in the heats of this A5 stake at Kinsley, in truth it was difficult to make a case for R Thomspon’s charge and the betting reflected this sending him of a 10/1 shot, this is why this sport is fantastic, you just never know and the powerful running dog gunned down long-time leader Target Rio 9/4f on the run in to sink favourite backers, he took it by 1L in 28.27 +20.
Mildenhall Lassie gets home in thriller
Waycross Lassie put in two fantastic performances in this A5 stake at Mildenhall, first in the heats getting up close home to deny long-time leader Moors Do. Could Lassie repeat that performance, punters certainly thought so sending her off the 7/4f and it was almost a carbon copy of the heats, Moors Do set the pace but would go down bravely near the line by 0.75L in 23.93 -15. Interesting her breeder Claire Mullane now residing in Ireland is a famous name from the show ring in UK, it looks like Claire is not bad at this breeding game either.
Monmore Billingham’s Olivia is impressive
Kim Billingham is not only a real talent in the training ranks she is also one of the nicest people, she sent out Ardcroney Olivia 5/4f to land this A6 final in style, after a very impressive performance in the heats punters were jumping over themselves to get on, one or two hearts would have been fluttering after 1st bend crowding but Olivia would overcome this to run out a comfortable 2L winner in 29.25 -10. There is plenty to like about this performance this was only Olivia’s 12th career start and there could be a lot more to come, under the guidance of Kim Billingham she could go through the grades.
Newcastle Artic weather hits Newcastle
A handicap owner’s bonus series final saw Michael Walsh’s
OWNERS BONUS SERIES Artic Weather warm up his supporters with a great front running display. Receiving 8m from the handicapper, Artic Weather made the most of this makeup by ensuring every yard was a winning one. Sent off at 5/2 his supporters roared him home from the fast finishing pack headed by Bods Boy the 2/1F but the line would come in time, there was 0.5L between them in 29.11 +10. One to note from this final would be Harry William’s bred and trained Pond Mozart he looks like a progressive youngster and is sure to have better days.
Kestrel swoops to land prize
This was an intriguing affair, anyone who had taken the 6/4 about Sable Kestrel must have been worried when Blackhouse Boo 5/1 went past at the first bend but Kestrel was always on the premises and McCarrolls strong running bitch got up close home to win by 1.5L in 29.02 +10. One greyhound I really think you should keep an eye on is A Bit Of Glory only a May 2011 whelp she was giving the winner 9m and looks a nice prospect.
Nottingham Rocket takes off for White
Paul White’s Bobbie Rocket wins heat and final of the A4 stake at Nottingham, Rocket was sent off a 5/1 shot but he ran more like a 1/2 shot, in truth it was a one dog show blasting from the traps he quickly put daylight between himself and his rivals to score by 4L in 30.24 +40. This was a very impressive victory and by my calculations it was a career best performance in his 91st race, well done to all concerned.
more impressive, he may be over four-years old but the veteran retains plenty of ability and held off the youngster by 0.75L in 26.08. Toggle Sconner deserves his moment but Dipton Robert looks progressive and is worth monitoring in the coming weeks and months, this puppy could end up top grade or minor open class.
Perry Barr Lauren looks useful at the Barr
This was a nice A3 final and sure to throw up some useful types, none more so than the winner Kilara Lauren for Gary Hodson she is just hitting all-aged company but there looks plenty more to come from her, sent off at 3/1 she put in an impressive display of guts, determination and a nice finishing kick to win by 1.5L in 29.13. Lauren is definitely worth looking out for and looks capable at winning a higher level than this, she may even stay further which would had another string to her bow.
Hage wows crowd with finishing kick
There is something about a greyhound that finishes strong, the racing public just love them and they witnessed exactly that here in this A4 contest, ‘Seathwaite’ is a prefix you associate with Pat Rosney but it came back to haunt him when his own Seathwaite Ifor was sent off a warm 5/4f but could only manage 3rd behind Seathwaite Hage 4/1 trained by Carol Evans, she came home like an express train and this June 2011 looks to have a very bright future over six bends, she got up to deny Bedrock Topaz 3/1 by 0.75L in 29.64 -50.

Pelaw Grange Roundagain Takes’em in style
Takem Roundagain for Gerry Wood put in a very polished performance to land the A4 stake final in style, sent off the 2/1 favourite, his backers never had an anxious moment showing superior early-pace he made the bend comfortably in front and from then on it was just a case of how far, at the line it was 2L in 26.49. You have to give credit to Short Dance who stuck to her task well and looks more than capable at this level but you can see Takem Roundagain winning plenty of races especially if he keeps showing trapping like this.
Walker’s Sconner early wins the day
There was not much to separate any of the six-runners on the book for this A3 final, punters sent off Dipton Robert the 9/4f but had to settle for 2nd place after a brilliant front running performance from John Walker’s Toggle Sconner 3/1, trapsix does not have a great record at Pelaw so this victory is even
David Pruhs is no stranger to big race success on the openrace scene but I am sure he will also take a great deal of pleasure out of a nice one-two here in this A2 stake final. Monleek Wonder was sent off a warm 6/4 favourite, his supporters must have thought they were collecting when he took it up at the first-bend but it was David’s other runner Lady Florence 4/1 who would come out on top. This was really impressive, she had to ride a bump at the firstbend but showed electric pace down the back straight to hit the front, she had 1.75L in hand over her kennel mate at the line in a good 25.64 +10. I would not be surprised to see Lady Florence pop up at Romford for a maiden sometime in the future, be interesting to see how she would go.
Rocket lands final but must re-qualify
Hot Rocket for Leslie Steward lands the A3 final but must re-qualify after waiting on the run in, sent off at 4/1 he had the race at his mercy and thankfully for connections he put his head in front when it mattered to beat Caz Rage 3/1 by 0.5L in 25.80 +10. We wish Leslie and Hot Rocket all the best for the future, you can’t deny he possesses great pace and with a bit of luck we will see him back on track soon enough.
Poole White goes whoosh for Chatfield

Lees seizing his chance in style
Fizzypop Megan was all the rage for this final sent of the 7/4f but it was veteran Lees Last Chance 5/1 who came out on top, he suffered second-bend crowding but even that would not deny this strong running dog his moment in the limelight, he came home strongly to force his way to the front at the fourthbend and he went on to win by 0.5L in 27.90. Fizzypop Megan will have other days she has great early gears and this is sure to serve her well over this course and distance.
Romford Biffo goes from last to first to land final
Cavies Biffo defied the Romford logic of early-pace wins the day by doing what few rarely do at the Essex venue; going from last to first, in pulling off this fantastic feat he took the A3 final. Sent off a massive 7/1 at trap-rise he looked a 700/1 shot but Martyn Wiley’s greyhound never knows when he is beaten and even a slower break than normal could not stop him. He went past them one by one to get up close by 0.75L over the 5/2jf Dinner Coco in 24.82 -10.
Cheryl pings to seal victory
Borna Bolt had the beating of Avonside Cheryl in the heats and was duly sent off the 5/2f but Ernie Gaskin’s charge reversed that form in style. Blasting from traps anyone who had taken the 5/1 was jumping for joy has she put daylight between herself and her rivals, defeat was never on the cards for this early paced brindle and she had a comfortable 2.5L over Three Dee 7/2 at the line in 25.06 -30 to take the A5 final in fine-style. Jim Reynolds trained Borna Bolt will have other days at this level but the day belonged to Ernie Gaskin’s flying brindle and you would think there could be more to come.
Shawfield Dignall’s jet takes off
Expert Jet took the final at Shawfield with a power packed finish to see her get up on the run in to deny 7/4f Royal Rosco. The latter was in receipt of 5m start, favourite backers looked like they would be forming an orderly queue at the bookmakers but Expert Jet 5/1 had other ideas, the favourite came out of the 2nd bend in command but Expert Jet was starting to hit top speed and roared past on her rival on the run to the line to score by 1L in 31.11 -90.
Bandit shoots down rivals
Blue Bandit for S Kennedy was in receipt of 12m from the handicapper and sent off the 2/1jf he was never headed, Boherna Queen the other joint favourite was housed in trap-one she tried to close on the 12m start but the winning line would come in time, there was an ever decreasing 1.75L has they flashed over the line in 30.08 +10. The runner-up looks a very nice bitch and sure to give connections some exciting days in
the coming months.
Roger is flying high at Shawfield
This was a fantastic final, credit to the Shawfield management it was a wide-open affair, co-favourites of four at 3/1 and the other two runners sent off at 4/1, it was anybody’s race, Reluctant Roger came out on top of a tightly run affair for John Spence, when the runners turned for home it was anyone’s race with several in with a chance, Roger though was bowling along at the head of affairs and he had just done enough to hold on by the narrowest of necks in 29.81 +20. Slaneyside Dusty the runner-up completely missed his break and perhaps should go into the notebook because without that he was a sure-fire winner.
Sittingbourne Gem shines bright in final
Our Little Gem for David Lee takes the A3 final with a brave front running display, sent off a 2/1 shot after a level break this son of Premier Fantasy showed superior pace to lead out of the first-bend and he set sail for home, although Hollyoak Dart 6/1 put in a very good effort close home Our Little Gem would not be denied, he had a diminishing 0.5L to spare at the winning post in 29.78 -40. The runner-up should go into the notebook and is definitely capable of performing and winning at this level.
Angel gets rough ride but wins
This was a very impressive victory from Rough Angel for M Dennis in the A4 final, sent off at 5/2 supporters must have taken a huge sigh when she suffered first-bend bumping which allowed Droopys Kizzie 3/1 to skip clear, Rough Angel should probably be renamed Tough Angel because she battled back and managed to get up on the run in for home to win by 1L over also fast finishing Pennys Lark 9/4f with long-time leader Droopys Kizzie taking 3rd in 29.59.
Sunderland Bhronagh is blessed in A5 final
This was a brilliant performance from Peata Bhronagh, the market suggested it was a one dog race with Rathea Ranger being a strong 6/4F, Julie Calvert’s greyhound made the bend in front and went to win in comfortable fashion by 1.75L in 27.84 +30. Several rivals will have hard-luck stories but Peata Bhronagh created his own luck by out trapping his rivals. Rathea Ranger will have other days but a greyhound you should keep an eye on is Delphin Milly for Yvonne Bell this youngster looks capable of eventually performing at a higher level.
Swindon Smith’s Sportsmans is the champ
After taking the heats by storm Sportmans Champ was sent off the 1/1f and she put in an impressive display to ensure victory in the A6 final. She trapped out better than she did in the heats this saw her quickly race to the lead, this spelled trouble for her rivals and she showed no mercy crossing the line 3.75L to the good in 29.28 +10. You would have to say there is more to come from this bitch in the coming weeks and months, she is on the march and is capable of competing at a higher level.

It promises to be a fantastic night; I will try my best to be there. The Winning Lines British Bred Derby is now in its third year, Harry Williams who sponsors it won the 2012 award; Services to Greyhound Racing it is no wonder a nicer man you could never wish to meet. I am really proud, this is a race I dreamt up and started and thanks to Harry and Ian Walton (Newcastle manager) I get to see the dream live on. Newcastle is a fantastic track to stage this race at, that area is a hotbed for British Breeding and it will be a worthy winner who collects the £1,500 first prize, Harry William’s deserves everyone to support this fantastic feature with a supporting cast of the highest order.

t the Greyhound Trainers Association they have a man who is a genius at working with stats and numbers. You really should check five at Hove in an open-race. Trap-three is out the website they make for interesting the trap to be with here, closely followed by trap-two. reading. Up to 20th March Every month I will be looking at some Hove have staged 88 open races of these stats and highlighting some that Worst Trap = Trap 5 with 6.82% catch my eye, hopefully you will enjoy them! Best Trap = Trap 3 with 22.73% Every effort has been made to ensure these are correct but we can’t be held responsible for any mistakes.
OPEN RACING Is There a Trap-five voodoo at Hove?
There is something spooky going on in Sussex, no its not crop circles, alien sightings or people going missing its far more serious than that, punters money is disappearing at a rapid rates of knots when they place their hard earned on greyhounds in open races clad in the orange jacket at Hove. Look at some of the stars that have been stopped by this trap-five voodoo – Bridge Ruth 4/5, Bubbly Phoenix 4/9, Droopys Danneel 6/4, Britania Joan 1/1 these four immediately spring to mind, all four were expected to win, all four failed. If you have the contact numbers for agents Mulder and Scully from the X files please get in touch because I am at a loss to explain this. Those are just in the last month, you would have to be super brave (or foolish) to go lumping on a greyhound drawn in trap-
Red Is Best At Monmore
One stat that jumps out at you is just how well Trap-one does at Monmore Green, up to and including the 20th March there have been 59 open races at the Black Country venue and quite incredibly trap-one has won a whopping 20 races giving it 33.9%. Trap-five does not fare well only winning 4 races. Up to 20th March Monmore have staged 59 open-races Worst Trap = T5 with 6.78% Best Trap = T1 with 33.9%
but trap-two is yet to strike gold and win a single race. Trap-five here is the dominating trap so far having won seven of the nineteen races. Up to 20th March Sunderland have staged 19 open-races Worst Trap = T2 with 0% Best Trap = T5 with 36.84%
GRADED RACING Pelaw Grange Stripes
You look at graded-racing and in the main there is very much a level playing field, most are around the 16.66% mark give or take a few points, it can quickly change with one race meeting. When you analyse Pelaw Grange though they have had 314 graded races so far this year (20th March) and trap-six has only won 7.64%. Up to 20th March Pelaw Grange have staged 314 graded races Worst Trap = Trap 6 with 7.64% Best Trap = Trap 2 with 20.7%

Shawfield statistics nearly caught me out in a big way, I thought there was something alarming going on Trap-Six has only won 1.28%. That was until I enquired how this could be happening, the handicap system is unique with the track operating an outside hare but using a handicap system (trap

six being off the front) what most people would associate with the inside hare. So how come the front dog is only winning 1% of races, that is simple most races are five runner affairs with trap-five being the front dog in most cases and that is a very healthy 21.37% of 234 races.
Trainers Hitting The Mark Gresham is on fire at Poole with 40.74%
You will know the name Shaun Gresham he is a big owner and been involved in some truly magnificent greyhounds like Cracking Man, Hondo Dingle, Handy Princess, He Went Whoosh and currently the brilliant Loughteen Blanco but did you know he is also a very useful trainer in his own right. Attached to Poole, Shaun and his wife Christina have hit the ground running this year (20th March) sending out 27 runners and winning a fantastic 11 races. Shaun Gresham was a huge name on the flapping circuit, I can remember him winning the Bolton Derby, he also won the Welsh Derby three times, the Devon Derby four times and countless other top class races. When you speak to Shaun and ask him what is the secret of his success he is quick to answer “My wife Christina” like the old saying goes ‘behind every good
man is an even greater women’. Shaun is a very successful man in business and while he is away making money Christina is busy training dogs, breeding and achieving fantastic success. Just look at her recent crop; bred out of their own stud dog He Went Whoosh, Have A Think is a July 2011 whelp and it looks like she will have an exciting career once stepped up to six-bends. Probably the most exciting greyhound in the kennel is Dustin Eagle at the time of writing this he has won his last four including the heats of the BAGS EGGSTRAVAGNAZA. It might say Shaun Gresham on the ticket but believe me Christina plays a vital role, I have seen her at work myself and you can’t help but be impressed, kindness with love and attention in bundles gets the very best out of their greyhounds, she has the ability to keep them running well for prolonged periods and is a fantastic trainer. The next £10,000 or £20,000 purchase by Shaun should be given to Christina and I’d back her to hold her own against the massive names in the sport. If I was to mention the name William Brown you could be forgiven for asking who but let me tell you he is a proper dog man, he loves the game and he has started the year off with a bang at Doncaster. It is not a numbers game with William; this is a man operating a small kennel who takes great pride in neutering his dogs from twelve-months of age into racing machines. He never buys the finished article but chooses to purchase saplings and go on a journey of discovery. To say he is successful would be an under-statement, he is not operating with big budgets but he is getting big results so far this year (up to 20th March) he has sent out 17 runners and won 6 races giving him an impressive strike rate of 35.29%. I caught up with William and asked him what he put his success down to? “I just love the dogs, seven days a week I spend all my time with them, we have a routine and I never change it, good spells or bad this is the routine, too many trainers chop and change for me. I get them at twelve-months of age from Ireland or we breed them ourselves and they are raw it gives me a great deal of satisfaction to see them progress through the grades. One such dog is Bromwell Bond a nice pup he should go through the grades. We

The title race is hotting up this month’s big movers are the powerful kennels of Chris Allsopp, Charlie Lister OBE and Paul Young. There are just three points separating the 2012 Champion Mark Wallis from 2011 Champion Chris Allsopp who is coming with a real charge. This was mainly down to the brilliant success had in the Ladbrokes Puppy Derby with a one-two but also taking the bitches final with Express Flame it was a bumper point’s pay-out for team Allsopp. With massive competitions just around the corner; Golden Sprint, Gymcrack, Arc, Scottish Derby to name a few, the next couple of months will be defining moments in this fantastic competition. The champion Mark Wallis looks to have a fantastic team heading to Romford for the Golden Sprint, he is not attending the Scottish Derby but will be well represented in the Arc at Swindon. Although the gap has been closed dramatically he still looks very much the one to beat.

Kevin Hutton is a man who is impressing me. I think this is the year he breaks into the top-six and stays there, what an achievement it will be for him, heading to the Arc at his native Swindon he has a team to die for and looks set to pick up big points. Chris Allsopp looks to have a strong team heading to the Gymcrack Strategic Review runner-up at Monmore looks a big player over at Kinsley and you never know if he was to win that and pick up other valuable points he could hit the front. A worry to all will be the emergence of Charlie Lister OBE on to the table, the Derby king comes alive this time of year and big runs up at Scotland and then Wimbledon would see him in a position to recapture this title again after a few years. Paul Young has a kennel of stars and one or two pieces of bad luck have come his way, he is still smiling and with the ammunition he has it is very much race on, he came 2nd last year and he will give it his all to try and better that this time around.

Greyhound rescue fife - benefit night Saturday 27th April 2013 11 races sponsored on the night by local patrons and businesses. (We are hoping to beat last years’ total of £3,600.) There will be finals on the night over 300 & 500yds which are sponsored by the main organiser of these benefit nights GEORGE ALLAN Track bookmakers have sponsored a £20 entry all scratch race with winner receiving £175, a trophy and presentation jacket, runner up receives £20. This race has proved very popular and has already filled with track dogs FLAME, IMPACT, LOCAL HERO, LOGAN, NED AND SLIM There will be a raffle for a framed rangers strip; signed by the 2013 division-three champions, this could be a collector’s item in years to come, there will also be all kinds of fundraising with tombola’s and raffles. It should be a fantastic event if you are anywhere near come along and enjoy the racing and extra activities. Location: Thornton greyhound stadium is situated to the south of Thornton village on edge of the A92. It is between the towns of Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy and only a 30 minute drive from Edinburgh. The track has the best running surface in Scotland and is one of only 2 tracks in UK who use the inside hare. The track has just started back after the bad winter and has loads of events planned from now right through the summer including: greyhoundrescuefife benefit night on April 27th. Track championships which have both been kindly sponsored by BENARTY FUNERAL DIRECTORS with the 300yds competition in May and 500yds in June. There’s talk of a fife derby returning with track looking for 12 dogs @ £30 making it £500 to the winner with trophy, presentation jacket and a framed photo with the runner up getting £100. There will be a benefit night for Aberdeen based Give a Greyhound a Home (G.A.G.A.H.) in August/September.

Hesley Blue (Jan 2001) 'Blue' I was a regular at Sheffield dogs but didn’t become an owner until Shanless Slippy x Top I was 21 (almost 28 years ago), much to Tune my parents disapproval … although within a few months the ‘family’ owned four greyhounds to be more! 12 ...soon years old The breeding of the dogs started to play a greater role and I was on
the look out for a well bred pup... eventually one caught my eye in an advert and I bought a well bred bitch whose mother was litter sister to Daleys Gold. At that time I didn’t have the facilities or the time to breed a litter so when she retired I leased her out for breeding but got a pup back in return which I managed to rear despite other work commitments. Walking and galloping, both before I went to work, and when I came home after work. …. Eventually we bought a place where we could actually get more hands on. ‘Hesley kennels’ are on the Sheffield/Rotherham border and we have been breeding here since 2002. In those 11 years we have bred on average 2 litters per year, More details can be found on the greyhounddata website under UK kennels (Hesley). At the moment we are as busy as we have been for quite a while. We have 8 dogs in the kennels, mainly retired but a couple of pups. Yes..the pups respect their elders …. but sadly not me. Blue is regularly allowed to just roam about the place at his leisure whilst Judy prefers to keep order in her own way. My niece, who is just 5 years old, recently had a ‘take your pet to school day’ and it was Blue’s turn (she wanted to take Blue as she takes him a walk every weekend). All of the class came up to give him a fuss...except one who was frightened by his size. He was the perfect gentleman as usual. Judy and Blue’s dams, Top Tune and Seven Seconds were bought together as a pair. Top Tune was bought as a 700yds bitch but arrived ‘in season’ so we had to wait to race her. She qualified straight out of season in to ‘top heat’ at Hull and duly won first time out in the fastest time of the year. After that it was the open race circuit. We took her for a 592m race at Harlow and backed her at 12/1. She blasted out of the boxes and was 10-15 lengths clear at the 5th bend before it became obvious that she didn’t stay and she was caught right on the line! Her early pace was sensational so we switched tack and took her for a sprint open at Sheffield, backed her again at 7/2 and she was never headed, blasting clear and recording the fastest sprint of the night from 3 sprint opens. Unfortunately she broke in season again, just 5 months after her previous season. In her come-

back she again blasted clear but sadly suffered a badly broken hock on the bend. She had to have screws,pins,plates and wires inserted and would never race again. We had one litter from her to Shanless Slippy, the unbeaten Derby winner trained by Dolores Ruth. It produced 4 dogs but sadly no bitches so Blue is the last of his line. We decided not to breed from her again as we didn’t want to put any undue strain on her injured leg. Seven Seconds meanwhile never ever came in season whilst she was racing (not suppressed) but did come in season regular as clockwork after she had finished racing. She qualified too quick to grade so went straight on to the open race circuit. A small bitch, just 25kg she raced all of her career at the highest level. We trialled her over the sprint distance at Hull and she was 2 lengths inside the TR, so we went to Perry Barr for a puppy open. Being attached to Hull often meant that bookmakers offered generous odds and we were not disappointed, after all, who knew the sprint times at Hull? I waited until the last minute before striking the bets, £400 at 12/1. She didn’t let us down leading at the first bend and recording the fastest time of the year over the standard trip. It was a great journey home. We followed up by entering the Monmore puppy Derby where unfortunately she took a bad bump in the final but rallied and failed to get back up by just a short head. She won open races from 460m up to 640m but for me her best distance was around 600yds. With this in mind I took her over for the Guinness 600 at Shelbourne Park. Just like every other competition she made the final. In the final she led until the 2nd bend before Spiral Nikita surged past and went on to win the race, we were beaten just 3 lengths with the likes of Tina Marina and others behind. Seeing Spiral Nikita run that night I made up my mind that I would use him at stud where the Guinness 600 finalists would be re-united. The litter (Spiral Nikita x Seven Seconds) not only included Judy (Hesley Nikita) who broke the TR at Hull (460m) but Zig Zag Kit winner of the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle and the Carling Oaks at Nottingham, as well as twice breaking the TR at Belle Vue (647m) and a 605m TR at Pelaw Grange. There was also another OR winner in the litter. ‘Judy’ has herself produced an OR winner which hopefully will result in her line continuing to produce as we have an arrangement with the owners so fingers crossed. It is not that long off the Derby now, it is getting exciting, our main dog for the competition will be Shaneboy Alley, he trialled beautifully around Wimbledon in a sprint clocking 16.15, we will have a lot of fun with this greyhound If he stays sound, let the fun begin!!! I would not put anyone off backing this dog each-way. We should have a nice team for the Derby, a bit of bad news Shaneboy Spencer has a done a tendon, Daniel Docherty sorted him out, we are probably looking at around four to five weeks but with a bit of luck he should be back in time. He won the Munster Derby and although winning this would be a long-shot he should go well in it (if we can get him back and well in time) The boys have bought a new dog, he looks exciting, Tulligoline from Graham Box (Boxy) we will give him time to settle, he is a lovely dog and is settling in nicely, he will take his place in the derby and the boys will have a lot of fun with him, I like this dog and he should give us all a lot of fun this year.

King Nicky, oh Nicky Nicky Nicky he should have won a couple more races this lad, he is talented, to be fair he always seems to be in at the deep end, we will head for Golden Sprint with him, he will surprise a few people when he gets it right, a winner waiting to happen, it will be hard to win this competition but you never know, what is it they say – you have to be in it to win it.

She is in season now (told you in last month’s column she would be) she will have a few trials until it gets to that 8 – 12 week period, you have to keep them ticking over but important to let them rest during that time when they produce milk. I don’t want her getting fat; she has big
competitions to win this year. Her big target is the William Hill Classic at Sunderland but she will probably take her chances in the Derby.

A good pal of mine and a supporting owner Grant McIntosh myself and Lizzie went all over the country, we had two in the final of the Highgate Classic and Grant could not make it. We had to stay well out of the way; a pal of ours took the dogs on with the money, we were having a nice bet. In those days mobile phones had come out but they were the size of bricks, Grant wanted commentary but of course I was undercover, Lizzie spotted this big tree overlooking the track, get up there Rab, I climbed the tree and the view was perfect. The boys were on, dogs in traps, hare running and the dog we backed was out in front with our other runner in 2nd, turning the 2nd bend I heard this crunch, the branch snapped and I came crashing to the ground and landed in a big pile of nettles. No joking I was hurt, the big mobile was a few feet away and all I could hear was Grant shouting into it “Rab what’s happened, Rab is that dog beat, Rab, Rab Rab talk to me will you.” I did not know what had happened, it turned out ok we had 1st and 2nd, gamble landed and everyone was laughing about it. Trust me those nettles took their toll on me I was stung in places best not to mention, ached all over and took a right bash on the head; it was ok though we were winners!!!

Monty Mr Consistent By Gentleman Jim Reynolds Borna Monty is being prepared for the Golden Sprint over 400 mtrs which starts at Romford Stadium on Friday 5 April. His form going into this group 1 race is very good as he is showing consistent improvement in every race. Monty has been with us all his racing career since coming over from breeder Rory Dwan from Thurles. He has been the model of consistency never finishing out of the first three, and winning seven of his 13 races. He is a May 2011 whelp by American sire Flying Stanley who is just starting to make a name for himself in Ireland and the UK. I am hoping that Monty can go one better than my previous finalist, Borna Sailor. Sailor was flying in the competition back in 2006 where he was a hot 11/8 fav to win the final, but on the night he missed his break and was last early on. He rallied off the 2nd bend showing great pace and determination but failed to get up and finished a gallant 2nd behind the shock 20/1 winner Driving Up Henry. The GBGB directive on trainers’ responsibility regarding feeding category 2 meat and the consequences of getting a foodchain positive is still being looked into by both the GTA and the GBGB rules committee. This is an ongoing process and I am still concerned by the responsibility placed on all greyhound trainers feeding fresh meat when there are obvious problems within the meat trade itself not only country wide but world wide that the meat trade and governments cannot control. The GTA will continue to work on this subject in the hope that a sensible resolution can be reached with guidelines that are fair and just. I started out flapping in Scotland in the 70s when our local bookmaker Joe Arciero moved into my local mining village ‘The Plean’. Joe bred, reared and schooled his own greyhounds and had great success breeding many top class dogs. It was at Joe’s kennels I helped whelp my first litter of greyhounds and the feeling of taking these tiny babies and rearing them through to 13 months then schooling them
and going on to win top class races gave me a buzz that I will never forget. The main reason for Joe’s regular success at flapping tracks was his great attention to detail and the very high standards of care he gave to his greyhounds; the class of greyhound and the quality of care they received from the trainers at the tracks we raced at meant your greyhound had to be at the peak of condition to be competitive. Joe also used the best stud dogs available at that time using top class greyhounds such as Hack Up Chieftain, Little County and Instant Gambler. Our favourite tracks that we raced at were Ashfield, Wishaw and Falkirk, in the 70s we had plenty of tracks to choose from north of the border in Scotland. Jimmy Donald was one of thee best promoters of greyhound racing ever, the standards that he set when running Ashfied Greyhound track were second to none. The running surface was always in pristine condition and the rest of the facilities at the stadium were always immaculate,
in the 70s there were five open races every year with prize money over £1000 to the winner with the Ashfield Derby worth £4000 to the winner. This would equate to £87,100 using average earnings by today’s standards, promoters take note!! Wishaw was also a very well run track which was always well attended and a betting ring that was one of the best in the country. The highlights of the year at Wishaw were the Pitman’s Derby over 500yds and the Spring Cup over the 2 bend 300yds, both these competitions not only attracted the best dogs in training from flapping tracks around the UK but also the best dogs in training from NGRC tracks and from Ireland. It saddens me to see the demise of the flapping game in Scotland with only Thornton in Fife and Armadale still operating, as history has shown that a lot of the top trainers in our sport started off at the flapping tracks.

We operate a small kennel with room for a maximum of 28 greyhounds and we are a real friendly fun kennel. We are attached to Sittingbourne which is a really great place to be involved with, our most famous owner is Lenny Ponder and his mates who have the Lenson Prefix. He is a real friend now more than an owner, it is exciting training dogs for Lenny he is always looking on the IGB site (you can’t get him off it) for the next big purchase – anything could turn up it really could.

Lenson Johnny – Well first of all thank god he seems ok, we never got any luck at all except rotten luck, that is just the way it goes, congratulations to Ricky Holloway and Westmead Meteor he ran brilliant on the night. Johnny will be back, aimed at all the big hurdle competitions in this country and even possibly Ireland’s Grand National, he is capable of winning one of the big ones for sure. Black Lamora – Her main target will be the TV Trophy, I thought she ran fantastic other night on Sky, she always gives you a great run and maximum effort, the Romford competition was on the short side for her, marathons will see her at her best and lots to look forward and get excited about with her. Lenson Bob – We will possibly try our chances with him in the Arc, he was off most of the Winter but is coming back nicely last Summer he did 29.58 at Hove and if we can get him anywhere near that sort of

form he should give us a chance. Hopefully he will be bang on for the Derby but he is definitely a greyhound to get excited about. Lenson Pele – is a nice dog, I see you napped him in The Sport when he won his debut. The guys involved in him will have a lot of fun, think we will look for a maiden 575m at Romford with him and take it from there. Boomtown Polly – She is a lovely May 11 whelp owned by a great supporter
of the kennel Mrs Birch, she has been off in season but there is a lot to like about this puppy, she has just started back up and going well, before her season she clocked 28.90 at Sittingbourne. That is some of the news from the kennel, I can’t believe we are in Spring, it is more like Winter, hopefully we will get some sunshine soon and it really does like 2013 will be a great year for greyhound racing.

Salacres - a team going places H ello to all the readers of the fabulous Greyhound Express magazine. When Mick told me about his plans for the magazine, I must admit I really didn’t know what to expect. When I saw the actual outcome last month, I was very, very impressed. The sport of greyhound racing has been lacking such a magazine for far too long. We have the Greyhound Star which is great, but as in any line of business, competition is a healthy thing. For those that don’t know me, so that’ll be most of you, my name is Mark Pierrepont. I own a few greyhounds with my friend and trainer Peter Harnden, and I also act as the buyer for the Salacres Racing Team kennel and also as a glorified kennelhand. I say glorified as I generally get some of the nice jobs once the dogs are at the track, the hard work that is completed each day at the kennels is down to the dedication of Peter, his assistant trainer Chris Brentnall, Peters mother Madeleine (GBGB Kennelhand Of The Year 2012), and her team of hard working kennelhands. Along with the owners at the kennel we are Salacres Racing Team. Our kennel is attached to Nottingham stadium and as well as being one of the biggest graded kennels at the track, we enjoy our regular trips on the road with dogs we feel capable of winning open races.

Alec from Kilmarnock: What is your best chance in the upcoming Golden Sprint at Romford?
We will have a strong team Alec; Lil Risky, Ayamzaman but I think our best chance is Glanmire Lad. He has been off throughout January and February with a ruptured tendon, he is fine now and will be spot on come the start of the competition. He loves it over the 400m and Romford is definitely his track, if he stayed a little further he would definitely be a derby dog.
Richard from Newmarket: What is the best dog currently in your kennel?
I love them all Richard, greyhounds are the most magnificent animals they really are, it would be so difficult to just pick one but if I have to then it would be Lil Risky. P eople will think it’s because he is fast, it is not he is amazing, a fantastic character, so friendly and full of life, and he is a brilliant greyhound in that respect, when you get him out of the kennel it is one of the highlights, a lovely dog with an amazing temperament.
Shelia from Devon: Who do you admire the most in the sport, do you have a hero?
I do Shelia, my mother-in-law Linda Jones. I am not just saying that either because when Mick gave me this month’s questions she was sitting right next to me. Linda is an amazing person and someone I look up to and admire greatly. When I took over at Imperial Kennels there was amazing foundations already laid for us to build on, I will never forget the success Linda had on the track but also the character and what Linda stands for, is what I really admire. verybody loves a winner. Whilst our greyhounds give us all the chance to enjoy the sport we love perhaps the biggest challenge that some face is not on the track but when they retire. Here at Crayford we have an ongoing commitment to see that our ex racers find homes when their careers are over. We all know how difficult it is to raise funds to assist our home finding schemes and I have often thought that it is often just a case of getting the patrons and publics imagination on board through new ideas. I had such an idea in my head for sometime which could well prove to be a winner, something that would get everyone involved whilst at the same time raising money for the retired hounds on a regular basis. So in February we launched our Fantasy Greyhound League which is open to our owners, trainers, staff and the public alike and it has certainly caught everyone’s imagination. Not only has it given that atmosphere of competition amongst all parties involved but now after just two months we have reached the stage of friendly banter and excuses being made as regards to how well or badly your team of twelve dogs are doing. Even the regular gambling section of our patrons who seemed somewhat reluctant to get involved in month one are now explaining to me at some length how they made some basic mistakes in their team selections having entered the March competition. It has proved to be a great success all round and the momentum is still building but most importantly our home finding scheme is guaranteed to receive 60% of the total pool money every month. At a cost of just £5 per month to enter your team the entrants now eagerly scan the advance cards for their team dogs and flock to see the latest league tables. So having got a mention already on the Racing Post TV channel and a link on the GBGB website the push is on to make the league bigger. It is simply great fun but best of all our retired dogs are still winning every month.

TWO NEWCOMERS TO WATCH
Back on the track I have been following the progress of a two newcomers worthy of consideration over the next few weeks. Zenas Elena trained by Gemma Davidson is a striking looking individual who has only had five races too date but he is the type of dog that has the potential certainly to reach the top grades here and will hopefully make open class in the future. Having won at A3 level in February he was subsequently switched to 540 metres in mid march and duly won his S2 race at the first time of asking. On paper his win time of 34.94 seconds was bettered by winners on the same card
in grades S3, S4 and S5 but he does give away ground at the bends running wide and can only improve with every race he has. He looks a strong type to me and whilst this may not have been the best looking S2 field on paper I am happy to take a chance on him making further improvement. It is always nice to see long standing owners have a decent little grader on their hands and so far this has proven to be the case for the connections of Boherash Realta. Her form here speaks for itself four wins from five starts so having started in grade A6 it will be A2 next time and although that may be one step too far at the moment that latest win time of 23.62 seconds over 380 metres tells me that she is there on merit and may continue to surprise, let’s hope so.

Finding stars of the future
W
e all love to see the stars of the greyhound world showing off their skills on the Sky Sports stage, the open race scene filled with brilliant trainers like Charlie Lister OBE, Seamus Cahill, Paul Young, Barrie Draper, Mark Wallis. Most owners and trainers can only dream of one of their dogs hitting those dizzy heights. Each month I am hoping to look at the grass roots of this game we all love, giving a chance of a spotlight shining on the trainers, owners, kennel hands and most importantly the dogs themselves at a lower level. It’s with our four legged participants that we begin, hoping to find some youngsters who may either be capable of climbing the grades at their respective tracks or having already done so and may be strutting their stuff on the open scene before long.
namesake Fletcher has climbed from A7 to A2 and the potentially aptly named Star has greeted the judge first clocking a smart 26.90 in a top grade contest win.
There is a May ‘11 litter, Ace Hi Rumble X Dalcash Tara that has caught the eye on a couple of occasions. The dam was a strong stayer at Sittingbourne for David Griggs and it’s interesting to note that the same trainer has Hi Tara who is showing signs of following in her mother’s footsteps. Having moved smartly up the Sittingbourne grades from A7 to A3 she has already been tried over the demanding 642m trip and is worth watching on BAGS in the coming months. Litter sister Hear Me Right has already been sent off 11/8 favourite for a Yarmouth A1 and finished runner up in a Sittingbourne open in her seventh career race. She began in A3 and looks likely to break her maiden tag sooner rather than later.
A couple of girls completely out of left field in the Midlands now with the Patricia Cowdrill trained pair of Ardera Poppy and Ardera Blossom. Half-sisters to Hats My Lady, an open race victor at Romford and Hove as well as winning multiple top grade races at Wimbledon, both have had just a couple of races at Monmore showing enough to suggest they are worth keeping an eye on in coming months. Poppy won on her debut in A9 grade and was sent off at a prohibitive 6/4 to follow up when finding trouble early on. Blossom has also been turned over as favourite, being picked up close home at 7/4 in A8 grade but the fact they were the prices they were is indicative that both are going to be well capable of being a few grades higher.
Financial Crisis Bringing In The Money
There may not be a more appropriately named dog at the moment than the Bernie Doyle trained Financial Crisis who was sent off the 2/1 favourite for his debut in A3 at Wimbledon. This September ‘11, blue son of Ace Hi Rumble followed his promising debut with an impressive win on his second outing, again sent off the 2/1 favourite. Taking it up at the 3rd bend he ran out a comfortable two length winner in 29.24 with the promise of plenty more to come with time and experience.

Enjoying the fresh air on the south coast is a Jul ‘11 litter to follow at Poole sporting the Firpits prefix (Fletcher X Westmead Penny.) Five out of the seven to hit the track have got their noses in front, making steady progress up the grading ladder. Bill began in A6 and recently won an A3 while sire’s
John Can Deliver The Goods
The dog who picked up Ardera Blossom last time was Slaneyside John from a promising looking Premier Fantasy X Slaneyside Sue litter. He appears to have clicked in his last couple of starts and looks capable of making further progress up the grades especially with two litter comrades in A3 at Sheffield. Another in the litter is
the dun coloured Slaneyside Hazel. This Coventry grader has an A9 win tucked safely under her belt already in 30.36 before only finding ex A2 Oxford dog Mash Mad Tia a head too strong in A8. It’s hard to believe that she won’t be capable of taking higher order before too long.
Bond To Deliver Payment
At Doncaster, Broomwell Bond has caught the eye winning A7 and A6 before missing the kick when changing the striped jacket to orange in A5. After just four career races this son of Van’s Escalade has the potential to be knocking on the door of top grade sooner rather than later. Litter brother Jolly Angelo has already won A2 at Sheffield while Scaled Down has found the tough 480m at Sittingbourne a little beyond his stamina limits so far but once strengthened up he should be another who will be at the higher end of the grading game.
Sinbad Can Take You On An Adventure
We end with one of the nicest bred litters on the graded scene at the moment (Premier Fantasy X Midway Skipper) litter are showing plenty of promise. Sinbad has already made his way to top grade at Wimbledon after a snazzy 28.87 win in A3. A1 isn’t the easiest place to be for a 19 month old puppy but if recreating his A3 run he won’t be long for the graded scene. At Coventry, Midway Nick has shown a liking for a stiff four bends at this early stage of his career winning A8, A6 and A5 in just four career starts being sent off favourite on each of those three wins. He looks as if he will relish a step up to a six bend trip in time but will reward backers for a while over shorter first.

his month I will kick off with some information on the game I love ‘Flapping’ or the independent scene in the North-East where I live and race and hopefully over time we will get into more details. I think it is brilliant that Greyhound Express have allowed us to come on board, all too often flapping is overlooked but most of the guys at the top started out in this field, I know Mick the editor did and it is great this is happening, hopefully this section will grow and develop. A LITTLE INFO ON FLAPPING IN THE NORTH EAST You will find most races are handicapped, 5 dog races at Easington and Wansbeck, 6 dog races at Wheatley Hill. Every metre is worth “8 pops” The dog with the Red Jacket runs from the front at Easington and Wansbeck but the Red Jacket runs from the back at Wheatley Hill. Now and again there will be graded open races. The better class of dog that run at the track are the usual entrants, these are level break races and owners will draw for traps prior to race. These races also tend to carry better money. Finally I would like to give a mention to Mr Joe Lovely of South Sheilds, Joe is 80 years old soon and won the Christmas Handicap with his dog Spare Rib, which is almost 6 years old. Well Done Joe. pring is in the air and the Irish greyhound racing season is getting into full swing. We have already seen fantastic renewals of the SIS Live Gold Cup at SHELBOURNE PARK, the Red Mills Open Unraced Stake at CLONMEL and the GMHD Unraced Juvenile Classic down in TRALEE. Respective winners Priceless Sky, Farloe Calvin and Ashford Castle are all proper hounds and do not rule them out from appearing at Wimbledon in the coming months as the Irish look, yet again, very strongly positioned to challenge for the English Derby crown. Messrs Black, Hennessy and McKenna have all enjoyed the taste of success in the biggest UK events in recent years and will be heading over. But as we approach April the home scene is particularly vibrant. At the time of publishing this month’s edition there is the small matter of the semi finals of the Kirby Memorial Puppy Stake Semi Finals due to be run this weekend at LIMERICK. You may be familiar with it – the winner gets €80,000. That makes it the biggest puppy race in the world ever! Personally I think the stake would have been as popular if the winner’s purse was €30,000 and the rest of the money could have gone to some other stakes throughout the year, but we cannot complain at what is, after all, unbelievable generosity from JP McManus towards our sport and his local track. The previously mentioned Ashford Castle looks the dog to beat in this. Another Classic started last weekend in MULLINGAR. The Gain Feeds Irish Cesarewitch is the biggest event on the Midlands schedule and the final is always pencilled in long in advance on many non-doggy folk’s calendars. The big night reverts to a Sunday this year and this practically ensures a carnival atmosphere at the Westmeath track, especially if the sun puts in an appearance.
The last couple of champions around the unique Ballinderry circuit have been from the very top drawer – Subway Ruth and that iron dog, dual winner, Definate Opinion really restored some lost glamour to this event, one of Ireland’s most established and prestigious annuals. Spring would not be Spring without two of the biggest and most famous greyhound stakes anywhere in the world: The College Causeway & Killahan Phanter Easter Cup and the Red Mills Produce Stakes at SHELBOURNE PARK and CLONMEL respectively. There are a lot of fellows that treat April like it is Christmas such is the quality of racing on offer. A quick glance at the names that have won these stakes down the years is recommended for anyone who fancies a ‘goosepimple moment’. Tyrur Big Mike, Thulesbeg Joker, Droopys Noel, Premier Fantasy, Late Late Show, Chart King, Park Jewel, Farloe Melody.....all the way back to the great Spanish Battleship ....and then even further back to the first winner Odd Blade in 1928. What a tremendous history the Easter Cup has, the oldest track stake in Ireland. Give And Go, Droopys Kewell, Moyne
Rebel and Borna Survivor were great winners of the Produce Stakes at my local track, Thurles. But before Clonmel closed between 1998 and 2003, there were some absolute monsters of the sport who strutted their stuff around the beautifully cambered Davis Road bends; Shanless Slippy, Come On Ranger, Live Contender, Adraville Bridge and then back to The Grand Fire. The stake had previously been run as the ‘National Sapling Stakes’ with Sporting Fancy taking home the very first prize in 1939. Since Clonmel has reopened there have been 10 more winners of the famous old stake with probably Geldrops Touch and Duke Special being the most impressive for me. It really is an exciting time of year for greyhound people but it is also an ideal time for the sport to attract new punters through the gates. We are due ‘a good summer’ (I think it is due on the second weekend of May) and now is the time for us, as a sport, to punch our weight in the fight for any floating entertainment shillings. The sport can be seen at its best over the next few months, let us not waste this opportunity. There is a fair deal of negativity in the sport at present with Irish owners and breeders starting to stamp their feet in disapproval at how the IGB is performing in terms of Prizemoney levels and the problems in the market for the sale of greyhounds in particular are already at crisis point. However, it is hard to fault the quality of racing that is on offer right now and what is about to be served up to us must surely have any sports buffs licking their chops. Love The Dogs. Film plot becomes a reality in Irish Cup
T
he plot is simple. Three unlikely lads from Belfast – Mo Chara, Spud and Paulsey – get a black greyhound -Ceberus, nicknamed ‘boots’ because of his big feet! and then have a series of hilarious adventures as they seek out and win the holy grail of coursing – the derby in Clonmel! I loved Paddy Breathnach’s 2004 film Man About Dog – with its clever dialogue, upbeat score and loads of editing trickery. The improbable –one in a million chancewhere the ‘small man’ or underdog not only wins but outwits the bookie and his nefarious assortment of henchmen, in the process. Now swap , Mo Chara , Spud and Paulsey for Pogo and Sugar from Wexford , the Irish Cup for the Derby at Clonmel, and a black 2nd season greyhound called Carricktobin Lad for Ceberus and you have all the ingredients to make Breathnach’s fiction a reality. Carricktobin Lad in winning the 2013 JP McManus Irish Cup (22nd -24th Feb) gave 2009 Boylesports derby winner Kingsmill Dynamo his first classic winner, and shot owner Billy ‘Pogo’ Kehoe and his good friend James ‘Sugar’ Connolly straight into the bigtime with their first coursing hound. The ‘underdog’ had defied the odds and claimed coursing’s biggest prize €80,000!!!! Carricktobin Lad or Hollyoak Shaggy as he was then known had done the proverbial ‘nothing’ in his puppy season. Niggling injuries and switching trainers prevented him from reaching the same potential as his siblings from dam – Hollyoak Pegasus’ first litter. Two – Here Comes Harry & Wise Call

had qualified for the Derby and Wise Lady and Bombshelriapants had qualified for the Oaks. Bomshelriapants further enhanced the reputation of this litter by winning the ‘32’ All-Age Gold Cup in East Donegal before following up with the Sean Drohan Memorial ‘16’ All-Age Bitch in Clonmel & Kilsheelan. In the intervening period, Hollyoak Shaggy now known as Carricktibin Lad, would make his all age appearance at the now famous Waterford meeting (Greyhound & Petworld Oaks winner – Smart Ali –qualified here) in their All age Urbs Intacta Cup.
Billy Kehoe, it is alleged, was born with a greyhound lead in his hands. Known to friends as ‘Pogo’, Billy is seldom without his good friend James ’Sugar’ Connolly. During the close season, Billy had decided to buy a coursing hound. Though always having a few track dogs in the kennel, Billy had never ventured in the ‘field’ game purely due to the expense. Billy had grown up in Enniscorthy greyhound track and is slip steward for Enniscorthy coursing club. Greyhounds are in his blood. In his quest, Billy came across, a black dog advertised in Tipperary. The two lads travelled down, did the deal, renamed their

purchase and set about delivering on potential seen in the siblings. Onto Waterford. Following the first round, Carricktobin Lad was 17 spots faster than anything else. It didn’t seem possible or plausible. Suffice to say, he annihilated all the opposition. This was our first glimpse of the true worth of the future classic winner. A win in all age company, enough to seal an entry for the Irish Cup. Disaster to follow. A muscle injury picked up in Waterford now ruled out any further outings in the short coursing season and threatened the glide path to the Irish Cup itself. Nothing to do but walk the dog back to
recovery. No seamless belts here. It was tarmac and lots of it! Billy and James would take turns to walk Carricktobin Lad, peaking at 100 miles per week. When they were both available, they’d both walk the dog together. Road walking is almost unheard of in the modern era. The labour involved and the dangers brought have ensured this. But road walking brings stamina second to none. Polished off with a few gallops on Jay Codd’s gallop at Woodlands and now the Irish Cup. 33/1. Not fancied by the bookies. Billy manages to secure a few extra points – as the dog’s owner. Bet is struck - 3600/100. First course won on Friday, the lads set sail for home. Limerick to Wexford is a three hour drive. With the excitement, the lads go in the wrong direction! Saturday morning, ‘Lad’ is now down to 16/1, the favourite - Bridewell Kieran - is gone and now all the Wexford lads are hitting the ‘books’. Safely through 2nd course , followed by a heavy tumble at the turn when winning 3rd course against the fancied Hopes And Dreams. On Sunday morning, ‘Lad’(4/1) will meet Killimor Matey (3/1) in the ¼ final. ‘Killimor’ the declared winner of the 2012 Irish cup following the disqualification of Jeru Cavendish is trained by Gerry Holian. Holian – a former Galway inter-county hurling star – is always a force to be reckoned with. Level early, Carricktobin pulls out a lead and extends as he has to shift across onto the red collar. The hare is gone. Kilimor has lost nothing in defeat and the likeable Holian will see plenty more days in the winners enclosure. In the top half of the card, the puppy Intacta Banba (6/1) leads Trafford Way(7/1) and Pocketrocketben (5/1) holds on against Skellig Sunrise (3/1) in a short course. Wilton Magic led game bitch Fives Treasure by 1L and now goes in against Carricktobin for a place in the final of coursing’s biggest prize. In the first semifinal the early paced Pocketrockeben looks to have it sewn up but in this longer course Intacta Banba drives on for a 1L win.
Next up ‘Carricktobin’ and Wilton Magic. All the roadwork is paying off. A four length win and another terrific ‘clock’. In the final Intacta Banba (5/2), owned by master Andrew Goff and trained by Asling Mangan proves no match for Carricktobin Lad (1/4) who pulls out for a 3 ½ L win.
Supporting Cast
In the supporting stakes, Central Heroine, owned by Brendan Duffy was a top class winner of the Patsy Byrne all-age Bitch stake. The Woodlands House Hotel Irish purse -for greyhounds beaten in 1st round of cup – saw Patsy Byrne collect with Kingdom Call – running in his own nomination and trained by Pa Fitzgerald. International racehorse trainer Sir Mark Prescott – so long a fervent supporter of coursing collected the Bill Chawke Irish Plate (greyhounds beaten in 2nd round) with Make Peace. Prescott had himself nominated Intacta Banba. Limerick coursing club – charged with running the 3-day Irish Cup – had made a series of alterations to the running area and hare enclosures following a dismal performance in 2012. After three days, the changes were met with unanimous approval. Animal welfare is paramount. Notwithstanding this, and despite the fact that Limerick racecourse affords coursing aficionados a level of comfort not seen anywhere else – save Clonmel – the purists will argue the Limerick racetrack is exactly that – a racetrack for horses. Too many straight courses , and wrong flags given following hares moving off and then back on line means the jury is still out. Oh, and there is still the matter of that 3600/100 bet struck on the Friday morning. Just like in the film, the ‘hookie bookie’ baulks at paying out – declaring that the bet was placed on a different dog – Go On Slogan. In the film, Pat Shortt’s character ‘Fergie’ offers a conciliatory ‘believe my boys ,it’s for ye’r own good’ by way of encouragement to ‘McCallion’, the ‘hookie bookie’ to honour the bet – whilst at the same time sliding the action of a pump action shotgun! Billy Kehoe did get his money – how did he get it? Don’t know - but I prefer the film version!

The lights are shining again at Sanford-Orlando Kennel Club
T
he Sanford-Orlando Kennel Club (SOKC), located in Longwood, FL, has been entertaining greyhound racing fans since 1935. Although, with the added competition for the entertainment dollar over the past 20 years, the kennel club seemed to be losing the race. Competition, such as casinos, lotteries, poker rooms and online wagering, has drastically changed the gaming landscape in Florida. Sanford-Orlando Kennel Club is one of the only racetracks in the state that relies solely on racing revenues and does not have a poker room. Penn National Gaming Inc. purchased SOKC in 2007 and revitalized the 78-year-old greyhound track. Investment has been made by the company to improve the facility, the customer service and their presentation of the product. Renovations of the facility and the grounds have been top priorities. New carpeting throughout the grandstand, 150 new HD televisions, fresh paint and
repaving the parking lot have been just a few of the improvements . The most notable improvement might be repairing the lights on the building’s marquee sign. The Sanford-Orlando marquee has not been lit in over 20 years. Penn National’s commitment to improving the fan experience at SOKC has resulted in a 7.8% increase in total on-track wagering over the past three months versus the same three months in 2012. In addition, new marketing efforts have helped to increase the live greyhound wagering by 6.5%. “We’ve really tried to focus the marketing to our live racing and simulcast products.” said Mike Newlin, SOKC’s new General Manager. “Prior to beginning our 2013 marketing campaign we felt it was vitally important to upgrade the facility and improve our customer service. “Creating a new look and feel to an old racetrack was challenging and expensive, but it was required to bring in new fans” said Newlin.
In addition to the facility and service upgrades, SOKC has taken an aggressive approach in revamping the racing schedule and the wagering format. Thursday matinee live racing has been added to their winter/spring meet, which consists of 7 performances a week until June. The wagering format has been simplified. Ten Cent Superfecta wagers have been added to every race. Matinee racing has moved from a 12:45pm start time to 1:30pm. Evening racing has moved from 7:15pm to a 7:35pm start. “Our changes seemed to have worked over the past few months, but we still have a lot of work to do. We want to keep raising the bar. Reaching a major milestone
W
ay back in March of 2011, the Willis Kennel probably though that they might have something good on their hands as Gs Uncle Henry blazed the way to grade A in just 5 starts, but I bet they had no idea how good of a greyhound that he would become and what he would accomplish. At the age of three years and five months, he would already be a multistakes finalist, a stakes winner, an AllAmerican, and now an 80 race winner who will be added to the all time ring of glory! In just his seventeenth career race Henry started in the 2011 JGR Puppy Stakes, and with a couple of wins in qualifying, he made it all the way to the finals. There he had the lead all the way to the deep stretch before surrendering it to his brother, Gs Uncle Harry, at the finish line. He jumped right back into grade A races and took the track by storm, as he scored wins in twelve of his sixteen races before starting off his next venture into
the stakes world in the 2011 James J Patton Silver Cup. There he bided his time early with a pair of thirds and a second place effort, which left him needing a big run in the semis to make the finals. As the box opened up he was a mile in front and never looked back as he posted up the hard earned win to secure himself as spot in the final round field. Parlaying that success into the finals, Henry made sure that he would not suffer the same fate as he did in the puppy stakes. Learning his lesson, he stole enough of a lead early on to hold on at the wire for the title. His biggest accomplishments on the year might have just come after that win. No one in the country finished off the year in better fashion, as Henry won fourteen of fifteen starts, including his last eleven races in a row. His freshman campaign was good enough to finish tied for second in the country in wins with forty-one, and secure him a spot in the elite eight in the country as he received the
prestigious AGTOA All-American award! There was no slump heading into his sophomore season as Henry just kept on keeping on as he continued to put up win, after win, after win. In 2012 Henry made the semi-finals of the Jacksonville Sprint Classic and was a game third in the finals of the 2012 James J Patton Silver Cup. In late November after winning thirty-seven more races, and competing in nearly one hundred and forty-six races without a significant break, Henry got a some time off to end the year. In 2013 Henry was rested and ready to fire again, and so far he has looked just like his old self. Rocketing from the starting box, stealing away leads early, and holding tough on top late for the victories. In nine starts this year he has won four times, finished second twice, and fourth once, which at the time of this writing, gives him career stats of 155/81-28-159. Or you could say that he has finished in the money in eighty-six percent of his
SPONSORED BY UNITED GREYHOUND RACING races, in the trifecta in eighty percent of his races, in the quiniela in seventy percent of his races, and he has won fifty-three percent of the races in his career. Henry is already lurking on the door of fellow masters of the Orange Park ovals, and All-Americans, Kay V Tatoo Tony, who won eighty-three races, and Flashy Sir winner Burt Road who totaled out eighty-six wins in his career. The all time mark is a bit higher though and is shared by a pair of greyhounds who are related. Leo’s Midas and My Problem both won one hundred and three races, but Midas accomplished his total just around the Jacksonville Racing Circuit ovals, where as My Problem won here and abroad. It must run in the genes with this duo as My Problem is the maternal grandfather of Leo’s Midas. With eighty-one wins in the bank, Henry is just twenty-three wins away from reaching yet another milestone in his career. With Brady, Gary and Sharon Willis taking such good care of their flagship athlete, I believe he has a strong chance to get it done. Congratulation on your latest accomplishment Henry and crew, and here’s too good luck and getting another milestone by the end of the year.

here have been some greyhounds in the past that have matched their names pretty well, but from an unobvious standpoint, no greyhound gets a better nod with me than Gavotte. A Gavotte is a French peasant folk dance that became popular in the 17th and 18th century courts in France and England, and her methodical rise to the top of the 660 yard ranks at bestbet Orange Park is a similar path. Starting off in sprints, her late driving style saw he finish in the money a lot, but she was rarely winning races and was amongst the lower crowd. It was her change to 660 where she became popular and saw favor amongst her peers, just like the peasant dance finding its way into the royal courts. After a trip back to 550 for the 2012 Jacksonville Juvenile, where she made the finals, she returned to 660 yards for the 2013 Orange Park Derby and that is when he stock started to rise once again. Competing against the best greyhounds at the racetrack, she never missed the money in 4 straight qualifying rounds and finished the stakes
off with a 4th place finish in the finals. But what has truly been amazing is her efforts since exiting the 660 yard stakes race. Over the last month, she has been the best greyhound at the racetrack over the added distance and has not been winning races, she has been dominating fields on the front end and from off the pace. Whatever she has needed to do to win, is exactly what she has been doing. At the added distance she has not missed the money in 15 races in a row, she has won 6 of her last 9 races, including her current streak of 4 straight victories. No greyhound has been able to hang and the more she races, the more dominate she has become. During her current runs she is averaging a 5 length win margin and a composite time of 37.58 seconds around the oval. Congratulations to the Falcon Kennel, Owner Jacobs Racing Kennel, Trainer Amy Willis, and everyone else connected with this great athlete. O’Donnell pair setting impressive track pace

ust two pounds separate the Pauline O’Donnell kennel pair that hold the season’s best times this year at Derby Lane. TMC’s Roxslide (Lonesome Cry x TMC’s Jiffy) is a well-bred female that not only holds this year’s best 660-yard time; she was also the fastest during the Tampa meet last year. Her kennelmate Kiowa Jordan Doc (Flying Penske x Kiowa Tiffany) nudged the old 30.40 by stakes star and top dog Venus Espinosa to the new 30.38 on March 2.“Roxslide has held the fastest 660-yard time for six months now,” said trainer John “Jay” Graham. “Doc’s time was a surprise as I view him as more of a distance dog that got the front in a 550 and took full advantage of it.” Last September the Eddie McDonald owned TMC’s Roxslide recorded 37.24 over the longer course that held through the end of the meet. And Roxslide’s September win was the start of 11 consecutive money finishes for the 64-pound female. She also captured the richest stakes race of the year in December by winning the $75,000 Holiday Challenge for Graham, the McDonalds and the O’Donnell kennel. “We were pretty excited when we got Roxslide because we thought she was going to tear it up early,” said Graham. “She was running consistent races so we put her in the Gold Trophy despite just having a handful of races.” With the Gold Trophy format just for the youngsters and not the seasoned stars Graham wasn’t afraid to enter the female. Roxslide had bad racing luck and was eliminated after two rounds. “I was a little discouraged, but I also know pups mature at different rates,” Graham said. Three starts later Roxslide was moved to the backside and she picked off her rival

at the wire to win by a nose. Roxslide was an entry in the St. Pete Derby and needed a fourth or better to advance among the high caliber field. Among her rivals was 2011 All America Team Captain Tiger Boy that later won the Derby. Roxslide was crowded late and her sixth place finish eliminated her from the stakes. “Her (Roxslide’s) owners Eddie and
Rhonda McDonald of TX kept telling us that Roxslide was their next stakes winner,” said Graham.“Nothing like a little pressure,” Graham laughed. “Nah, it’s all good,” he said. Eddie McDonald admitted that he was sure his precious pup was going to steal the show. “It’s like being proud of your kids,” said Eddie. “Roxslide’s mamma is well-

bred and we liked what we saw in Roxslide on our farm. Jay made the stakes win happen and we are so proud of her.” TMC’s Roxslide was born in June of 2010. She carried her fleet-footed distance style into the new season and improved her time by .03 seconds when she clocked 37.21 on January 21. Her time remains over a length quicker
than her nearest rival Flying Oviedo’s 37.32 from Red Oak Racing. Roxslide is a dual distance racer and boasts a 71% money record and a 50% quiniela record over the 660-yard course. At the 550 she has a 68% money record. TMC’s Roxslide was one of three Greyhounds of the Month named in the January/February issue of the National Greyhound Review. Gary Guccione highlights Roxslide’s impeccable dam line and compliments McDonald for “building” another champion from a similar recipe used for McDonald’s two time All-American TMC’s Remedy. Kiowa Jordan Doc is barely two years old. J. E O’Donnell and Greyhound Hall of Famer Kay Smith own the 66 pound male. Jordan Doc is a youngster that turned two years old in January. He has 61 career starts and has recorded a 70% money record. Doc is also a dual distance racer for Graham. Jordan Doc recorded 15 money finishes in his first 17 career starts of which six were first place finishes. “He (Doc) made it all the way to semifinals in the Fall puppy stakes, but even winning his last qualifier didn’t get him in the stakes,” said Graham. Doc had already proven he could run the longer 660-yard course before moving to the shorter 550-yards for the Fall Juvenile event. He was moved back to the longer course and earned a post in the Holiday stakes giving Graham two shots at the title. Kiowa Jordan Doc was a superfecta favorite in the final that saw him get tangled early and fall after the break. Doc bounced back to tally six quiniela finishes in his next seven races. This year Doc has juggled the two distances. In February Doc was taken off after being bumped and finishing far back over the 550-yard course. The male
re-schooled two weeks later and won. His March 2 start was his first official race in nearly a month. Graham wasn’t expecting Jordan to record a new time during the Saturday matinee of the stakes final. “I am not taking anything away from Doc, but when he got the front I knew he would win the race-the best time was a bonus,” said Graham. “I will probably be entering both Roxslide and Doc in the upcoming Distance Classic stakes.” The 54th annual stakes will begin Saturday night March 23 and conclude Saturday night April 6. Graham won the 1994 Distance Classic with Shyland Saint and also the Gold Trophy Juvenile with Hoosier Country that year while employed with the former Wayne Ward kennel. Other Derby Lane notes: Hambleton kennel’s beautiful white and red 77-pound male Ed N Eddie has nosed out Venus Espinosa as top dog by moving on top in the win standings. The October 2010 son of former Night of Stars champ Betty N Ed has won 9 of his 17 starts. He boasts 14 money finishes in the top grade. Myokie Barb whelped the male and his other successful littermates Ed N Edmundo and Ed N Edwardo that also compete in the top grade. Red Oak Racing, LLC, is on fire and moving to the top of the kennel standings. Cal Holland, Jr., has enjoyed the top spot for nearly two years, but the young Alex Hall’s Red Oak Racing athletes are burning up the track and are within striking distance. At the time of this writing Patriot was on top with 133 wins from 937 starts. Hall, who is two decades younger than his trainer rival has posted 129 wins from 810 starts. McAllister kennel is third with 123 wins from 740 starts followed by Abernathy kennel with 101 wins from 744 starts. D’Arcy kennel makes up the top five with 94 wins from 584 starts.

Racing defines the racing greyhound

W
e have recently learned, via the Canine Genome Project, that the Greyhound most likely did not emerge in the deserts of N. Africa. His DNA is not too closely typed to the Saharan sighthounds. More likely, as “Stonehenge”, aka John Henry Walsh (an author/breed chronicler) suggested in the late 19th century, he came to the British Isles with the Celts, possibly having evolved from wild dogs of Eurasia. Greyhound DNA, according to the latest research, is likely one of the “basic” strains of DNA from which several breeds of dogs descend. (some breeds who share the same common female GREYHOUND ancestor are the St Bernard, Irish Setter, Belgian Malinois and the Miniature Schnauzer) In light of the controversy that has been ongoing since the late 1960s, concerning the wherewithal of the Racing Greyhound, the public portrait has always been painted by those who are the furthest from him, and who know the least about him—also known as anti-racing activists. The most egregious mischaracterization of him is the one that has been promoted by the activist media on behalf of their activist friends. That being, of course, that he is horribly abused by racing and the people who race him. This would seem to fly in the face of everything we know to be empirically true about canines and large, thriving populations of them, inasmuch that it is estimated that (currently) about 10,000 greyhounds, each year in the USA, make the difficult and challenging adjustment from racing life to personal/family pet life, without too much
bother. This is rather remarkable in light of the fact that Racing Greyhounds are not bred to be pets, or to necessarily have sunny, outgoing, companionable dispositions. Moreover, abused, un-socialized and cruelly treated dogs would have to be meticulously and professionally rehabilitated to achieve this unprecedented, holistic, massrehabituation each year, population-wide. All but the most high-toned, highstrung, hot blooded greyhounds are able to completely re-habituate themselves rather seamlessly, though. Interestingly enough, they have become a virtual sensation in the pet world because of their sweet, affectionate, malleable natures, their striking appearance, and their general absence of malice of any sort, toward anyone, or toward other (stationary) dogs. They are this way, as anyone who has
even a rudimentary understanding of canines realizes, BECAUSE of, not in spite of their racing heritage, breeding, upbringing and environs. That’s how dogs manifest. Unlike most breeds, greyhounds usually stay with their dams for anywhere from 1626 weeks, where they exist within their litter/pack. They are then placed in kennels and runs with members of other litters, where a larger pack hierarchy develops. They learn to co-exist within, and learn also, the ways of the pack. As they learn to race, they learn to “hunt”, just as they did in nature, as members of a pack. Then, when they go off to the racing kennel, they become members of an even larger hunting pack. Like all dogs, greyhounds thrive on habit and routine. For a dog to be his most successful as a racer, he needs to be kept as free as possible
from human-induced stresses, particularly those that are caused by lack of punctuality and proper care. Dogs have very precise biological time clocks. They respond more readily to the known rather than to the unknown, to routine rather than to novelty. The racing greyhound is the only large breed which is kept virtually free of the crippling, degenerative, congenital diseases of hip/elbow dysplasia and patellar subluxation. These faulty genetics simply cannot gain a foothold in a selectively purpose-bred, functional population of dogs. Because we have racing, we have an objective method for breeding selectivity, and a vast and diverse gene pool and breeding population. Greyhounds are chosen for breeding because of their ability to compete successfully on the racetrack, and there are no concessions to superficiality, fashion or whimsy—such as color, tail-set, or ear placement, as there are with show-bred dogs. A greyhound who is a successful racer is, by definition, correctly adapted to perform the job for which he/she has been bred. The breed continues to adapt to the functional and athletic challenges of racing (hunting), as long as objective selectivity is enabled. Racing is what enables that crucial selectivity, which keeps the greyhound on an adaptive curve, bent only by supreme functionality. There are no other considerations. There are at least 46 distinct female families of racing greyhounds extant in the USA, which emerged at or around the time of the invention of the mechanical lure, as major players in the saga of the racing greyhound. There is probably no other canine population as genetically diverse as the racing greyhound. The female is the carrier of mitochondrial DNA, which among other things, controls the utilization of energy in the canine organism. Each of these female families has made, and continues to make very important contributions to the populational gene pool. In the absence of racing, which financially supports the entire greyhound population, whole families of greyhounds will disappear, and those crucial genetics will be lost to us forever. The greyhound will become a fringe breed, and will inevitably and irreversibly degenerate, (if he doesn’t disappear entirely) as has every other breed of working/ sporting dog which has had its “job” taken away. *The author is a former greyhound trainer and a co-founder of RaceForAdoption.com
