New Name, Expanded Vision

Presenting: The Office of Student Access and Support Services

In order to encompass all aspects of a student’s experience and development in their pursuit of higher education, the former “Student Success Programs” office has a new name and expanded vision. The “Office of Student Access and Support Services” (SASS) is designed to provide services for any student who may need additional support to successfully navigate their four-year college experience.

“The SASS Program looks at holistic student development and support services in order to reach students where they are in their current development,” says Brian Hazlett, vice president for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management. “SASS gets to know each student they work with in a personal and professional way.”

SASS encompasses the Lancaster Partnership Program (LPP), the Pre-Scholars Summer Institute (PSSI) and the Millersville Scholars Program (MSP). LPP, PSSI and MSP focus on college readiness, college access and academic persistence for students who qualify. The comprehensive services offered through the Office of Student Access and Support Services work as a pipeline for students from high school into college.

“We work to assess each student to provide the appropriate services to help them reach their desired goals and aspirations,” says Renardo Hall, associate vice president for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management. “SASS looks at every aspect of a student’s development in trying to exceed their expectations.”

Darlene Newman has been named the director of this renamed department. She served as interim director since 2016. Newman and Christina Williams, the associate director are currently based in the Chester House on campus.

“Our office provides a critical support network for qualifying students,” says Newman. “We’ll work with staff and faculty across campus to provide everything from academic advising, tutoring and writing to counseling and personal encouragement. It can be the difference between a student deciding to stay at Millersville to pursue their education, or deciding to leave.”

“We work hard to develop programming that’s informative and impactful for our students,” says Williams. “Our goal is to give students the skills and tools they need to be successful both in and out of the classroom.”
