The Mastercard survey found 43 per cent of Brits bother less with notes and coins than just two years ago.

Fifty-four per cent of blokes said they had less than £5 on them, compared with 39 per cent of women.

Sixteen per cent stretch to a tenner — but only seven per cent carry more than £50.

Instead we are increasingly relying on plastic or smartphone payments with the average adult having two debit or credit cards.
