DescriptionPocket case of surgical instruments by various makers, in red leather folding case, formerly the property of Mungo Park, (1771-1806) and taken by him on his first expedition to Africa between 1795 and 1797.
The case contains three pairs of scissors, an abscess lancet and a probe pointed bistoury. Also a director, probes, an artery tenaculum and a female catheter. There are no bleeding lancets or sharp pointed knives. The instruments were made by various manufacturers in London and Bristol. This suggests that Park may have replaced some of the instruments before he went to Africa. Park gave the case to Sir Anthony Carlisle PRCS after his return from his first expedition to Africa in 1797.
