Jean Paul Gaultier AW13

Beyond the rue Saint Martin, Gaultier goes back to the scene of his most provocative collections, the Salle Wagram

Shifting locations from Jean Paul Gaultier's usual atelier space and returning to the opulent dancehall surroundings of the Salle Wagram seemed like a symbolic move. It’s where he showed some of his most provocative collections in the eighties. Gaultier attempted to bring back that provocateur spirit. The backdrop was a window grid shouting out his Gaultier name loud and clear, with haute girls and their deliberately mismatched mullet hair standing behind, broadcasting powerful silhouettes. What followed was his eighties sensibility all grown-up. The cone shape bra was softened up into cardboard-coloured sculpted wool tops, made to look like mannequin dummies. Brash typography from his trash couture days were rendered in fur. There was a lot of that for the woman who loves to swish around and feel luxurious. Collage patchwork dresses were plush rather than homespun. The enfant terrible of Paris, dare we ask, is finally adult?
