September 2023 – June 2024

Children 3-5 yrs old

Program

Our program develops independence, self-help skills, co-operation and positive social interactions. We believe that each day is a learning experience for the child. Our daily schedule consists of both structured and non-structured activities, preparing each child to become confident and ready for entry into the elementary school system.

Daily activities include free play where children have a choice of activities (ie. sand and water play, play-dough, dress up, puzzles, manipulatives), arts & crafts, structured group circle time/story time and physical activities (ie. walks in the neighbourhood, walks in the trails and activities in our playground).

We encourage all children to reach their full potential within an environment that provides opportunities for optimal social, emotional, physical and intellectual development.

Philosophy

Our philosophy is to provide a positive, happy, safe, and productive learning environment for children of all developmental levels. Through a wide range of activities the children are given opportunities to problem solve by making choices and decisions for themselves which promotes a healthy self-esteem.

We believe that children learn by experience; it is our responsibility to guide them through a variety of child appropriate activities designed to expand feelings of confidence and success. We model positive social values with an emphasis placed on building life skills, which allow children to be responsible for their choices and actions. We treat each child as an individual with his or her own unique needs and abilities.

Our child care program promotes the inclusion of all people and recognizes the diversity of age, culture, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation and abilities in our community.

Our program develops independence, self-help skills, co-operation and positive social interactions.

We believe that each day is a learning experience for the child. Our daily schedule consists of both structured and non-structured activities, preparing each child to become confident and ready for entry into the elementary school system.

Licensing

Renfrew Preschool is licensed under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act and Child Care Licensing Regulation. The preschool complies by all rules and requirements set out by the Act and Regulation.

Guiding & Caring

We strive to create a happy, caring environment where there is a healthy respect for the rights of others and their property, while acknowledging the rights and feelings of each individual. We encourage the children to talk through their own problems and conflicts, and to make appropriate choices and compromises. However, if a child seems unable to cope in a situation, the staff will redirect that child to a new play area, or ask the individual to sit out until he or she can behave appropriately or provide them with a logical or reasonable consequence for the inappropriate behaviour. Consistency between the home and the Centre is very important in this area. Please feel free to discuss concerns and questions with the teachers.

Staffing

The Preschool Teachers are trained and certified as Early Childhood Educators. They meet all the requirements outlined in the Child Care Licensing Act and maintain a valid First Aid Certificate and a successful completion of a criminal record check.

Alice Shiu, Preschool Supervisor
I am certified as an Early Childhood educator, Special Needs Educator and an Infant/Toddler Educator. I have been working in the Early Childhood field for over 26 years and have enjoyed every minute of it. I was born and raised in Vancouver and attended elementary and secondary school in East Vancouver. I have a younger brother named David and a very adorable nephew named Edwin. I have been living in the North Burnaby area for the past 28 years. I look forward to working with your children and hope that this year brings even more interesting adventures.

Michelle Lui, Preschool Teacher
I studied Early Childhood Education at Vancouver Career College and graduated in 2012. Prior to studying ECE, I studied music for three years at Vancouver Community College and Capilano University which focused on Vocal Jazz. I then decided to switch paths to study ECE because of my passion for children. I am looking forward to meeting each and every one of you. Please do not hesitate to approach me anytime. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity to meet and work with your children and families.

Shu Ying Huang, Preschool Teacher
I have received my ECE license, First Aid and Food Safe certificate. I can read and speak English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. I always find working with children very rewarding and heartwarming. I love and enjoy spending time with them. I’m looking forward to meeting the new children and parents this year.

Jane Yee, Preschool Assistant
I am a proud mother of three. I have been living in this community for 15 years and I’ve been working as an assistant teacher for preschool program in this community centre since 2009. I enjoy working with children, especially love singing, dancing, doing arts and crafts with them. I do a lot of volunteer work in elementary schools and in little league baseball which gives me a lot of working experience with children. I like travelling, collecting stamps, and souvenirs from different cities in my spare time.

Professional Development

Staff at the preschool will be utilizing up to two (2) professional days each year to ensure that they remain current with recent developments in the E.C.E. field

Newsletter & Notices

A calendar is distributed to each child monthly, which includes a calendar of monthly events and important information.  You will also receive notices from time to time regarding special events and field trips.  Every notice sent home is important, please make sure that you read all newsletters and notices or have them translated for you.

Payment Program

Fees are to be made by Visa, MasterCard, or Amex. The last month’s, June preschool fees will be processed on the day you register along with a $30 non-refundable registration fee.

The monthly fee reserves your child’s space in the program; therefore fees must be paid in full during periods even when your child is away due to illness, vacation or other reasons.  Furthermore, your fees will remain unchanged regardless of the shorter sessions during December (Winter break) and March (Spring Break).

To access payment receipts for income tax purposes, you will need to set up an account at recreation.vancouver.ca

Cancellations

If you need to cancel out of our preschool program, a written notice must be given to the Preschool teachers one (1) month from the 24th of the previous month prior to leaving.

If the Preschool teachers are not informed, the June preschool fee (paid the day you registered) will not be refunded. Cancellation forms are available from the preschool teachers. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the preschool teachers.

As the Preschool program is budgeted on a 10-month school year, parents/guardians will not be able to withdraw their child after March 24th.  Your June fee will NOT be refunded.

Cancellation forms are available from the preschool teachers. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the preschool teachers.
