Overview

In this rapidly changing landscape, publishers and societies are rethinking approaches to platform development to better suit evolving business, community, and organization-specific needs. This series of three webinars highlights non-traditional initiatives and the collaborations that made them possible. Speakers will provide insight into the background and rationale for their strategy, any implications for resourcing, skillset and stakeholder management, lessons learnt and opportunities for the future.  The series comprises three case studies:

Wednesday 6 May - Emerald & 67 Bricks: a platform co-development model.

Overview: How does a small publisher hold their nerve to digitally transform? During this session Harriet Bell (Emerald Publishing) and David Leeming (67 Bricks) will discuss their unique partnership, the key issues behind moving from a vendor platform, the ability to innovate, pushing the boundaries in publishing and the hybrid-build approach which is all about flexibility and getting closer to the customer.
Today’s developers and architects have taken the best lessons from the monolithic platforms of old and are now creating smart, flexible frameworks built to interact with other systems and to create opportunities to build business-changing assets that will age gracefully. Taking a hybrid-build approach means selecting and using the best of breed components that are out there, and combining these with your own specific architecture, design and development.

Thursday 14 May - UCL Press & ScienceOpen: a community based open review model.

Overview: UCL Press and ScienceOpen have collaborated on the development of an open publishing platform with a community-based model of open peer review. The first multi-disciplinary journal, UCL Open: Environment launched successfully last year. In this webinar we will share our joint vision for the future of scholarly communication and our experience in realising and communicating this vision. Open peer review, editorial moderation, community engagement, transparent processes, and rich metadata feeds are all essential features of the UCL Open platform. The ScienceOpen discovery technology and a unique research-driven curation architecture powers the ability to embed broad scope publishing into the whole of research outputs while nourishing niche topical communities. For university or society presses curious about whether platform publishing and open peer review could meet the needs of their scholarly community for rapid, transparent and open communication of research results.

Tuesday 19 May - SPIE & Project Euclid: a NFP collaboration for platform delivery.

Overview: This session will explore the compelling case study of two nonprofit organizations entering into a partnership for technology services, and the lessons learned along the way. When evaluating potential platform vendors, Project Euclid, an aggregation of math journals sponsored by Cornell University Library and Duke University Press, approached the industry’s well-known providers. Ultimately, however, they made a novel choice – to partner with SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. In so doing, Euclid became the second partner to use SPIE’s proprietary platform for hosting services, after an inaugural partnership with BioOne. We will discuss the drivers for both organizations in pursuing this unique collaboration, the challenges faced and opportunities presented, and takeaways that might help others in the future assessing similar non-traditional initiatives.
