Freshmen Shine in Duke Debut at Penn State Duals

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Duke men's and women's fencing team opened the 2019 slate Sunday at the Penn State Duals on the campus of Penn State University in State College, Pa. The Blue Devil women finished 4-2 on the day while the men posted a 2-3 ledger in the Mary B. White Building.

"We are very happy with the performances of both teams," head coach Alex Beguinet said. "The losses were all very close ... one or two bouts would have made the difference. The freshmen showed they were more than up to the task by performing superbly. They had a positive mindset and were able to adapt on the strip. Their performance was beyond expectations. The spirit of both teams was very high and we all noted they acted and fenced as a cohesive team."

The Blue Devil women picked up wins against Haverford (26-1), Penn (18-9), Penn State (14-13) and Yale (19-8) and fell to Columbia (17-10) and Temple (15-12). On the men's side, Duke topped Haverford (26-1) and Penn (14-13) before falling to Penn State (15-12), Columbia (15-12) and Yale (14-13).

It was a rookie show on the women's side in Pennsylvania as four posted 10-plus victories. Freshman Alex Gorman headlined the saber squad with a 14-4 record, followed by epeeist Ava Navarro with a nearly perfect 13-1. Foilist Zoe Superville (13-5) and epeeist Huda Aldadah (12-5) rounded out the quartet's Duke debut.

2018 All-America honoree and ACC Fencer of the Year Eoin Gronningsater spearheaded the men's contingent with a nearly flawless 12-1 ledger in foil while freshman Terence Lee racked up a 12-3 record in saber during his first outing in a Duke lamé. ACC epee gold medalist Bryn Hammarberg also saw success today with 10 victories.

Full team and individual results from the Penn State Duals can be found below.

The Blue Devils will return to Pennsylvania next weekend on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Philadelphia Invitational.
