FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL: BACK TO SCHOOL FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR

This resource includes a week of lesson plans and resources that can be used during the first week of school in a kindergarten or first grade classroom.

Activities and Resources Include:

Editable Lesson Plans {pg. 4-9}

Use these lesson plans to GUIDE your first week of school. Make changes in the editable fields to meet the needs of your students. The lesson plan template has 5 content areas to type your plans for each weekday. (ALL text is editable)

Back to School Songs {pg. 10-15}

Print these songs and place them on a metal ring to easily use during the first week of school. The songs included will help with transitions, whole group time, rules and literacy instruction.

“My First Day” Shared Reading {pg. 16-19}

Read this poem together each day of the week using the schedule provided. Teach predictions, syllables, vocabulary, sight words and much more before the students add the poem to their poetry notebook.

First Week Class Book {pg. 20-21}

Have the students illustrate and write about their first week at school. Use the cover provided (teacher name is editable) to make a class book for the classroom library.

Class Rules {pg. 22-24}

Teach your classroom rules easily using this poster and song together. Editable poster available.

Teacher Biography {pg. 25-40}

Help your students learn about you by creating a Teacher Biography to read on the first day. Choice the cover that best fits you, edit the text to share about yourself and attach pictures before laminating. This book will be a hit in the classroom library!

Chicka Chase Scavenger Hunt {pg. 41-50}

{ALSO SOLD SEPARATELY} Tour you school with your students by reading Bill Martin’s Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and setting up the alphabet before the first day and following the editable clue cards to find the prize (i.e. usually the playground)

Kissing Hand {pg. 51-53}

Use the color or black and white template to create a craft to send home with your students on the first day.

Writing Packet {pg. 54-59}

Start the year off right by getting your students writing. Introduce the Writing Packet and have your students show their skills during the first week. This is a great way to see where your students are before beginning Writer’s Workshop. (Friday is usually a share day, but is including in the packet if needed)

Writing Activities {pg. 60-65}

These activities include a Word Chart that can be posting in your writing station and writing pages for students to use, as well as, tracing pages that may be completed as morning work.

Alphabet Cards {pg. 66-75}

Introduce your students to the Alphabet Chant using the cards provided or poster.

Class Alphabet Book {pg. 76-102}

Write your students’ name in the class alphabet book. Have students add to this book throughout the year.

Initial Sound Literacy Center {pg. 104-129}

Have your students match the picture cards to the correct letter mat.

Alphabet Matching Literacy Center {pg. 130-140}

Have your students match the capital and lowercase letters using a pocket chart.

Sight Word Literacy Center {pg. 141-146}

Edit the sight words cards to meet your students’ needs and tape around the classroom. Have your students write the words they find on the workpages provided.

Class Number Book {pg. 147-168}

Have the students work in groups and use stickers, paint or daubers to make the correct amount of objects for each page.

How We Go Home Graph {pg. 169-173}

Use magnet tape to put the headers on a white board or place on a pocket chart. Have the students choice the appropriate card, write their name and put on the graph.

Shape Hunt Activity {pg. 174-180}

Tape or hide the shapes around the classroom. Have the students work in groups to find the shapes. After the hunt, have the students cut the shapes and glue in their math notebook (they can cut the header of the workpage, too.

Color Matching Center {pg. 181-186}

Have the students put the correct color word on each crayon and color the workpage correctly.

Number Matching Math Center {pg. 187-195}

Have your students match the numbers and picture cards using a pocket chart.

Patterning Math Center {pg. 196-201}

Have your students choose a patterning card from a bag, box or tub and make that pattern using the picture cards.

How do I know if a resource has been updated?

If a file has been updated, you will see a notification under the resource that says "Newly Updated – Download for Free!".

You will need to download fonts specified in the resource and install it on your computer before downloading the editable file.

Install the most recent version of Adobe Reader onto your computer. If you have any problems editing, viewing or printing a file make sure your Adobe Reader is updated.

Now you can download the file to your computer. Once the file has downloaded open in Adobe Reader. You should be able to view the editable fields and the text should match the product description.
