March 2013

Author portrait of David Hastings by John Sefton
Who makes the news? Who decides what's reported? In Extra! Extra!: How the People Made the News, David Hastings delves into these questions by investigating Auckland's ruthless early newspaper wars, in which ‘no trick was too dirty and no insult was too scurrilous if they thought it would win them an advantage.'

And at last, the book many of you have been ringing and emailing about – Patched: The History of Gangs in New Zealand. Catch Jarrod Gilbert on Saturday Morning with Kim Hill on 23 March, when he'll discuss this violent, sometimes horrifying, inside story of a tough but revealing part of Kiwi life.

Posters for our March books Extra! Extra! and Patched are available in A3 and A4 sizes. Contact your HarperCollins reps about your in-store display needs.

Look out for Patched news and features running from Friday 22 March, including Saturday Mornings with Kim Hill, TV One, Sunday Star-Times and provincial papers and news programmes.

It’s time to order your 2013 Auckland University Press catalogues. Tell your HarperCollins rep how many you’ll need for key customers – available late April. In the meantime, browse our forthcoming titles online.

Also now due into the warehouse in late April, the tenth imprint of The Complete English–Maori Dictionary, which has been re-set and will be on the water shortly.
Cover detail The Lifeguard by Ian Wedde 9781869407698
The printers’ proofs for Ian Wedde’s laureate collection The Lifeguard have arrived back and we reckon the yellow foil type on the atmospheric blue cover photographs (courtesy designer Philip Kelly) is going to look great. Words looking pretty sharp as well.

The Lifeguard will be launched at an Auckland Writers and Readers Festival fringe event in May. We’re on the edge of our seats to see the full 2013 AWRF programme on Wednesday next week.

Paul Scofield and Brent Stephenson authors of NZ Bird Guide 9781869407339
The paging of our massive Birds of New Zealand: A Photographic Guide (August) continues too – we’re figuring out our albatrosses and whipping the Procellariidae into shape. While it’s marvellous the authors have identified yet another species, we're hoping for no more stop-press updates!

We’re also madly commissioning covers, juggling book schedules and putting the final touches on the Auckland University Press 2013 catalogue – watch this space for the year’s line-up of books, out soon.
Media has started for Extra! Extra! How the People Made the News with a feature in the New Zealand Herald (‘the scoop on the papers that kick-started the Queen City’) and the first review on Nine to Noon:

‘Tells the story of the drama and excitement of newspapers over that time in Auckland  . . . it’s really engaging about our most important city, a really interesting slice of social life’ – John King

Cover detail, Home in the Howling Wilderness 9781869407391
Home in the Howling Wilderness by Peter Holland is ‘Scholarly, well researched, and jargon-free’, says Gavin McLean in the Otago Daily Times.

‘[A] fascinating book, full of illuminating local detail about the experiences of the first generations of settlers’  – Ron Johnston, Environment and Planning D: Society and Space

‘[A] valuable addition to the repository of literature and knowledge relating to New Zealand’s environmental history . . . should appeal to a wide audience’ – Envirohistory New Zealand

Cover detail, The Yellow Buoy by C k Stead 9781869407353
Last month, C. K. Stead answered the NZ Herald’s ‘12 Questions’ and talked to Arts on Sunday about his new book The Yellow Buoy. Critics comment:

‘It’s a beautiful production, I have to say; I think you’d agree, it’s rather lovely.’ – Mary McCallum, Nine to Noon

‘His practised fluency shows in the controlled nature of The Yellow Buoy’s poems . . . a cup of bright European sunshine.’ – Sarah Dunn, Nelson Mail

‘Stead is an expert and sometimes playful craftsman. He can do the alexandrines of his prizewinning poem “Ischaemia” and write a “double sonnet” . . . But most often he writes in syllabics, that art concealing art which can sound like casual conversation to the unwary.’ – Nicholas Reid, Metro
