Macramé? Hanging planters? 70’s kitsch? Yep, they are back and in full force this year. In 2016, the design world went mad for all things tropical and homes began to fill their room with an abundance of house plants. Home décor stores found their customers bypassing the classic décor objects and hunting for the latest and greatest planter. Local nurseries saw a surge in customers last year, and couldn’t keep any of the top trending plants in stock. As stated in my previous article, Pantone Color of the Year – The Color You Love to Hate, the plant fever is not going away anytime soon.

L.A based designer, author of the New Bohemians, and Instagram extraordinaire, Justina Blakeney, coined the 70’s plant and vintage design trend “Jungalow” – one part jungle, one part bungalow, all things wild and bohemian. The style is a culmination of mixed patterns in bold colors, tropical motifs, global vintage inspired furnishings, and of course, lots of plants. As someone who leans towards minimalism, all bets are off when it comes to plant life. The more the better! Not only are they beautiful and bring a wonderful organic vibe into the home, they purify the air.

So, once you’ve ransacked your local nursery, what do you put your plants in? And where? That is always the conundrum, isn’t it? Ceramic pot or woven basket? On the coffee table, in the kitchen window or in the living room corner? When you bring plants into your space, make room for them by removing a few décor pieces from the space. Be thoughtful about their placement, and think about how they will pair with your existing furnishings.

But what if you are limited on space, specifically floor space? How do you host a sea of greens when you don’t have an inch to spare? Look up, of course! Your ceiling is the perfect place to hang beautiful greens – unused square footage begging for a bit of ornamentation. The hanging planter, especially one of the macramé sort, really pulls in that wonderful retro 70s-bohemian vibe. I know what you are thinking, macramé – the weird ropey basket hanging in my grandmother’s sunroom? Yep, that’s the one. But don’t fret! These hanging planters have had a face-lift and are fabulously chic. One of the hottest garden trends for this year is the vintage inspired hanging planter. From dainty knotted leather planters hung on hooks to intricately designed chunky rope macramé hanging six feet from the ceiling, these beauties are all about making a bold statement.

This spring, step up your plant game and hang your greens. Below are a variety of hanging planters I found this past week at All Seasons Garden & Brewing Co. From macramé to sleek stoneware to slabs of wood, they have everything you’ll need to get your home into “Jungalow” fashion.
