Big Red men upset Union in hockey

Forwards Jake Weidner and Anthony Angello scored 39 seconds apart late in the third period Friday to lead 16th-ranked Cornell University to a 5-3 men’s hockey victory at No. 4 Union College.

Senior captain Weidner slipped a shot past Union goalie Jake Kupsky on a power play with 4 minutes, 9 seconds left to snap a 3-all tie. Sophomore Angello’s second goal of the night followed, scoring on a partial breakaway for the final margin in the ECAC Hockey matchup.

The Big Red (13-6-2, 8-4-2) scored three times in a span of 6:04 for a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. Junior forward Alex Rauter opened the scoring at the 10-minute mark on a breakaway, but the Dutchmen pulled even when Mike Vecchione, the nation’s leading scorer, converted a shorthanded goal.

Cornell responded 75 seconds later, when Angello beat Kupsky with a high shot during a two-man advantage for the Big Red. Dwyer Tschantz made it 3-1 at the 16:04 mark with his first goal of the season.

Vecchione scored with one second left on a 5-on-3 for Union (18-7-2, 11-3-1) in the second period, cutting the Dutchmen deficit to 3-2. Ryan Walker then tied it on a power-play goal with 10:41 left, setting up Cornell’s big finish.

Women’s Hockey

Cornell 5, Union 1: Senior forward Hanna Bunton finished with three points as Cornell routed visiting Union College in an ECAC Hockey game at Lynah Rink.

Union’s Arianna Kosakowski turned a backhander into a power-play goal 3 minutes, 44 seconds into the game. The Big Red responded with five unanswered goals.

Bunton’s first goal came 7:41 in, her equalizer coming off a rebound on a Kaitlyn Doering shot. Doering followed with the go-ahead goal at the 15:36 mark.

Bunton and Micah Hart (power play) scored in the second period for Cornell (15-6-3, 11-3-3), which got the final goal on a shorthanded shot from Kristin O’Neill at 3:22 in the third period.

Paula Voorheis made 10 saves for the Big Red, who had a 37-11 advantage in shots.

Kate Spooner had 32 saves for Union (4-24-1, 1-14-1).

Cornell hosts Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s Basketball

Brown 81, Cornell 70: Tavon Blackmon scored 17 points to lead Brown to an Ivy League victory on the road.

Brandon Anderson finished with 14 points and four steals and had a big role in holding Ivy League-leading scorer Matt Morgan to 10 points. Obi Okolie contributed 13 points and Steven Spieth had 11 for the Bears (11-10, 2-3), who received 10 points and 11 rebounds from Joshua Howard in snapping a two-game skid.

Wil Bathurst led the Big Red (6-14, 2-3) with 13 points. Troy Whiteside’s 10 points matched Morgan, who came into the game averaging 19.1 points.

Brown made half of its 20 3-point tries. Cornell shot 6 of 21 from behind the arc.

Alfred University 85, Ithaca 77: Riley Thompson scored a team-best 21 points, but visiting Ithaca dropped an Empire 8 Conference game. Sebastian Alderete hit four 3-pointers en route to 16 points for the Bombers (6-14, 2-9), who got 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds from Peter Ezema.

Dom LeMorta (game-high 22 points) and Nick Schmidt (17 points) made four 3s apiece for the Saxons (8-11, 5-5), who received 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds from Dalton Cousin. Tristin Hook contributed 10 points for Alfred, which held a 36-31 lead at halftime.

Women’s Basketball

Brown 72, Cornell 67: Justine Gaziano scored a game-high 27 points to help Brown to an Ivy League win at home. Taylor Will contributed 14 points and Janie White had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Bears (12-6, 3-2).

Nia Marshall finished with 22 points and seven rebounds for Cornell (11-7, 2-3), which got 11 points and eight rebounds from reserve Samantha Widmann.

Cornell plays at 6 p.m. Saturday at Yale.

Ithaca 63, Alfred University 51: Ali Ricchiuti’s 16 points helped Ithaca College to an Empire 8 Conference victory on the road. Cassidy O’Malley contributed 12 points for the Bombers (17-3, 9-2), who received eight points and eight rebounds from Maine-Endwell graduate Julie Yacovoni.

O’Malley also blocked three shots for Ithaca, which took a 28-24 edge into halftime.

Unadilla Valley graduate Amanda Off finished with a game-high 19 points for the Saxons (2-17, 0-10), who got 10 apiece from Jamie Wilcox and Bri Hicks.
