Meet the 2020 Illinois PTA Outstanding Volunteer of the Year!
Jenni Bennett from Northwest Suburban Council in Northwest Cook Region.

Hear what her PTA has to say about Jenni Bennett:

Jenni Bennett is truly a role model for parent involvement in the PTA.  She is a leader, a partner in inclusion and a volunteer who has had immeasurable impact on the CCSD15 Community for the 10+ years she has been involved with PTA.  Her passion for engaging with the community is evident to anyone who knows her or has worked with her.

Currently, Jenni is Secretary of the Northwest Suburban Council, which serves a total of 20 local unit PTAs within District 15.  Jenni compiles and distributes meticulous minutes in our meetings, created the directory and has fully embraced Memberhub as the way to store and disseminate important information to our members.  However, Jenni’s contribution this year goes above and beyond the secretary’s role.  She can be found at just about every event, volunteering in various ways such as concessions set up or clean up.  Jenni is often a mentor to new council PTA members, who are just getting started in their leadership roles; giving them tips on how to be successful.

Most notably, this school year, after not having a bilingual representative on the Northwest Suburban Council, Jenni took it upon herself to make a difference in the community.  26.8% of the CCSD15 student population is designated as “English Learners”, meaning they are eligible for bilingual education.  Anyone who has ever been in PTA leadership for any D15 school would agree that engaging with families of these children is challenging at best.  Jenni reached out to the Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee.  Through this connection, Jenni was able to recruit a bilingual representative to join the NWSC this year.

Jenni Bennett is the kind of individual who recognized the value of a community, being involved and the importance of inclusivity of the diverse population that constitutes our community.  NWSC and the greater CCSD15 PTA Community have been fortunate to have her all these years.
Kitchen Scrap Gardening - Action for Healthy Kids
Gardening is one of the best ways to encourage healthy eating among children. Active involvement in the growing and harvesting of their food can help kids develop more positive attitudes towards fresh fruits and vegetables, allowing them to better recognize preferences and increase their willingness to try new foods. Gardening helps children realize that their actions have consequences both good and bad and lead to greater understanding of cause and effect. It also helps them learn responsible decision making, as they watch something they took care of grow, leading to a feeling of accomplishment and self-worth.

If outdoor gardening appears to be a challenge – whether due to space, climate or something else – you can grow indoors with items right in your own kitchen!

New from Teach Plus Illinois: Itsy Bitsy Lesson: Simple Activities to Keep Young Children Growing and Learning
Parents sheltering in place with very young children are struggling to balance work and educating their children. To help, Teach Plus is launching Itsy Bitsy Lesson: Simple Activities to Keep Young Children Growing and Learning.

These daily, free, online sessions will be led by experienced early childhood educators who will model activities using common household items that parents can use the next day with their young children. They will take questions from parents and provide tips for differentiating for ages from birth to five years old. The sessions are organized with Teach Plus in partnership with the Illinois State Teachers of the Year, and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
